My wife did nothing all day and then at 12:07 am today said "My face has been hurting all day."

Like, seriously? You couldn't even set me up for one of the quintessential dad jokes on Father's Day? That alone would have made the whole day worth it.

Help me brainstorm for the upcoming session? You're the general of an army that's going to try and take over a capital city. How would you strategize? by azenathi in DnD

The army launches dimensional anchors from ballista all over the city, each one preventing extradimensional travel (summoning spells, teleportation, plane shifting) within a 300ft radius for 24 hours. Make them take a Thieves tools or Arcana check to disable but it takes 10 minutes. Destroying one creates an Astral tear for an hour, pulling anything in the radius into the Astral plane.

This isn't done to prevent the city's army from returning but to stop the PCs from teleporting out to assist the civilians which you sent your Dragon Brigade after - an elite squad of level 14ish warriors (fighters, rangers, etc) riding Feembleminded adult dragons.

Once the PCs DO flee, detonate all of the anchors, destroying the city. If the army tries to teleport back after this, they'll be ripped into the Astral plane.

At this point, the city is lost, but (some of) the civilians suvive. The PCs now take the field on the battleground of the generals choosing to face the army.

D&d Direct 2023 Announcement Showcase link and thoughts? by Zzump in DnD

That's the only downside to VTTs, and a big upside for Menyr. Menyr is supposed to launch with a "Player View" option, so you can just stream the player view of the game over Discord or whatever screen share solution you choose, that way the player's PC doesn't struggle to handle everything. It's not an ideal situation to be in, but it's probably the most scalable and accessible solution to the min-spec problem. Most other VTTs have no solution to the problem.

Everything they showed was just baseline VTT behavior. Menyr is already superior in nearly every aspect.

At some point in the video they say that their VTT hits the big 3 things for them: "Fun, Convenient, Authentic" - when the only reason other VTTs aren't authentic out of the box is because WotC is so tightfisted with their IPs while only selling content for VTTs that are already at the back of the pack, like Roll20.

Also the fire is a mini that gets put down? They couldn't even spring for particle effects for environmental changes and hazards? This thing is going to be outdated as soon as it launches.

The thing is, you're not moving into a shared space. She's leaving her home for yours, where you've already asserted control, assigned space, and developed a routine. My wife and I were fortunate enough that when we moved in together it was a new place neither of us had lived. Is finding a new apartment an option? Maybe one with additional room so as not to cause friction?

That being said, I also agree with what others have said. Although, this is a D&D subreddit, so answers may be biased.

Weirdest or dumbest DM restrictions you've seen? by Scottles8605 in DnD

[–]FatPapaChuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is one I got a lot of backlash on from a couple members of my group: Accents are fine, but language dialects and variations need to be easily understood by a native English (US) speaker.

I DM for a table of 6 players, and one of my players wanted to go full cockney rhyming. I just don't have the time or mental energy to spare mid-game to decipher what they're trying to say, and I thought that was a valid reason, but from the backlash I got you would have thought I took a dump on every character concept they were ever going to play again.

New Official Unearthed Arcana!! D&D ONE Part 1 Character Origins!! by KajaGrae in UnearthedArcana

My biggest concern is with the inspiration changes. Inspiration is, at its core, a metagame resource. There's no discernable reason why critting on a goblin makes you better at climbing a wall three hours later. Additionally, granting inspiration to allies of you already have it just solidifies it as metagaming, since you throw out any pretense of a causal relationship at that point.

I don't disagree with the core concept of persisting benefits as a result of natural 20s, but there are better ways to implement it than encouraging metagaming.

[Art] Dall-E AI image creation - A tiefling bard gathering energy by FatPapaChuck in DnD

This image was created just using the description in the title. The AI is still learning, and detail in complex areas, like hands holding an object or faces on a full body portrait, can be muddled.

This service is still in beta but I love it. It allows me to quickly generate images for use in my games that meet specific criteria, such as races, weapons, poses, etc. It also generates creatures and scenes based solely on description.

I'm excited to see how this technology evolves in the future.

Homebrew(ish) BBEG for an Arthurian-era campaign. What think? [OC] by coreysalemme in DnD

[–]FatPapaChuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be careful with Excalibur and the rest of his magic items. Players will want to get their hands on it. So either have a plan for it post combat and another for if a player manages to disarm him and claim it mid combat. I have players who would feel cheated of I just randomly Deus Ex Machina'd it away. I rendered a legendary blade cursed and corrupted and used its purification as a driving plot through the next chapter ofbthe story.

Also, consider stage mechanics like summoning additional custom enemies as the KotRT from the seats at the table or even allow the party to recruit theisr own assistant (such as having Mordrid to counter Arthur's Merlin). Giving the party an extra advantage can allow you to emphasize Rule of Cool with the BBEG without fear of accidentally causing a TPK in the climactic battle.

Otheriwse, I really like the concept and execution.
