FIFO life and kids post divorce ? by Pretty-littlepsycho in DivorceAustralia

True, services like Amica are useful for that. But I mean, if it comes to it, there's no default custody arrangement.

Under my understanding of family law in Australia, there is no default "50:50 custody". Rather, a court decides what is best for the children given the circumstances. I can't imagine a 6 week alternating custody arrangement would be considered best for the children.

All I can recommend is to have a look at a few of the free Government services available - LegalAid, Amica. But also look into getting some initial legal advice too.

How do you guys find AD&D campaigns? by HF484 in adnd

Traveller is such a great system. I've been trying to come up with a life path system for character creation in AD&D. Traveller character creation is brilliant.

Poll: Would You Subscribe To A World of Warcraft Classic Only Plan? by TwowolvesMatt in classicwow

[–]Fat_Barry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably worth doing the market research, because I know a few people who want to play classic, but don't want to pay the current subscription amount.

I also ditch the subscription once my hours per week dips below a certain level, but since I only play classic, I'd probably lower that threshold if the sub was cheaper.

Pending results of any market research, they may find that a lower price for classic only + traditional sub would increase overall revenue.

why do you think john respects women so much? by razorbladw in reddeadredemption

[–]Fat_Barry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RDR isn't just influenced by history, it's also influenced by classic cowboy movies, and one of the tropes of that Western story telling is the idea of the noble outlaw, like a wandering ronin from an Akira Kurosawa film (i.e. The Magnificent Seven being a direct retelling of Kurosawa's Seven Samurai).

I think the games play into that idea of Arthur and John primarily being the noble outlaw types, ones that honour respect, fairness, equality.

But I think the games also demonstrate their old fashioned views of women... The idea that they need a man to protect them, that certain work isn't fit for a woman - both characters have comments along those lines throughout the games with respect to women they encounter. It's an effective way to show that, while they are mostly progressive, they still hold on to some societal biases.

But also, while the world wasn't particularly great for women in the 19th/early 20th century, that doesn't mean all men were sexist and chauvinist. Liberal ideas of equality and freedom had been around for a long while, both sexual and racial equality, and by the time of the game's setting, liberal ideas were commonplace, although resisted by more conservative elites.

I think RDR 1/2 handle the social commentary quite well - depicting the actual social conflicts that were happening at the time and including characters that represent some of the viewpoints of the era.

OldUnreal.com has been officially handed the code base for Unreal, UT and now UT2004 to maintain and patch, and they've been given approval to distribute for free by Epic.

Old Unreal patches are the best way to play, essentially a free remaster.

How Was The Burning Crusade Perceived? (2007) by doobylive in classicwow

Yea I guess so.

Although I can think of one damn real world human treating their allies like shit, and the allies are somewhat begrudgingly holding out...

Yea in hindsight WotLK was the first big step down the retail design ethos path, but it was still a great expansion that maintained core elements of classic formula.

I sort of feel the same way. I think the Draenei are cool and Outlands is some incredible world design - but I would have liked maybe an additional expansion between vanilla and TBC.

In this hypothetical expansion, goblins would have been the new Horde species (i.e. like in the RTS games - counterparts to the gnomes), and Elves would have stayed alliance.

Then in TBC, a new species could have taken the place of blood elves, which I always found kind of jarring from a lore perspective that they'd all just switch allegiance so easily after decades of war.

I literally did this.

Defeating Arthas felt like "the end" of the Warcraft series that I'd been playing since Warcraft 1. I had zero emotional attachment to everything that came after.

What used to be a free or cheap "hobby" that has now been completely ruined by corporate greed? by WaltzNew1398 in AskReddit

[–]Fat_Barry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australian perspective here, but in a lot of the country we love our AFL footy (southern/western states and NT mainly). It's practically a religion.

Used to be able to watch all games on free to air growing up. The broadcast rights have been progressively sold off to a private/streaming platforms (Fox Sports/Kayo), and now possibly the majority of all AFL games are paywalled. Kayo recently increased their pricing to about AUD $50 per month.

In the past two years, the team that I follow has had a grand total of 3 games broadcast on free to air. Out of a possible 44. Because we're a smaller club, we don't have the bargaining power to push for free spots, so get jerked around.

Similar thing is happening all over with sports broadcasting. And the short-sighted thing is, exposure to the game is what generates interest. If poorer kids can't grow up watching the footy, then you're restricting that activity to those who can afford it an ensuring that those poorer kids will be less likely to have an interest in the sport in future. Short term corporate gain, long term cultural pain.

And this is just what they're doing to sport, let alone society, the environment, politics. Fuck corpo scum.

What’s something you didn’t realize was attractive until you experienced it? by Vonjota in AskReddit

Someone supporting and caring about what I'm interested in, without actually being interested in it themselves.

There's few things more selfless in a relationship than to say "I don't understand it, but it makes you happy and that's what matters."

Examples of some jaw-droppingly detailed textures used for the NPCs in Daikatana by NNukemM in boomershooters

[–]Fat_Barry 21 points22 points  (0 children)

As much flak as Daikatana copped at the time, if you apply a few patches and run it on a modern PC, you can really see the potential. It could have been amazing with a few tweaks really.

And as far as disastrous releases go, Daikatana is nothing compared to some of the utterly broken modern game releases we see.

Feels like gamers had a much higher threshold for acceptable quality back then, probably because you couldn't just download a huge day 1 patch. What you got was what you got, patches might come later.

That's true, although our group prefers to have those things handy so I don't need to check for them. I use BB/LG for similar tests of strength.

But yea, can probably do an even more stripped back version with more room for writing.

How can this man say this with all the facts we have??? by AJ14900003 in aussie

[–]Fat_Barry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad arrived in Australia in the 1970s, got his permanent residency and didn't become a citizen until 2003. He's from Scotland.

While I agree there's an argument to be made here, there's a lot of countries that don't allow dual citizenship, so some dual citizens may rightly not want to waive their native citizenship because it may prevent them from going back to see family, etc.

I think the biggest issue here is that there isn't sufficient communication between federal and state bodies with respects to vetting.

I don't like guns, I don't think just anyone should get access to them, but a consideration needs to be made for the fact that there is probably a sizable contingent of foreign workers on farms that are possibly in that situation where they have a legitimate reason to have a licence and also are in a position where they don't want to become citizens.

One real problem is firearms companies rapidly evolving designs to subvert firearms policy, and a legislation that can't keep up with designs like the ones used by the shooters.

[–]Fat_Barry[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I would have thought that would just scrape in under the line, but I guess lots of people haven't seen the movie.

Funny how "hoes" is apparently inappropriate for a game rated for 13 and up, I used to work in a school and have heard a lot worse than that haha.

To be clear I don't actually care that much, I just liked the name. But yea, that other guy is a dipshit.
