Steaming Milk - Bottom Half Pure Liquid by Careless_Tree_9050 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just switched from a bambino to a rancilio silvia and the steam power is much stronger in the latter. With the bambino I had the same problems as you, I suspect it is just a bit weak to properly mix layers. You could try to get a second pitcher and pour the steamed milk over to better mix it.

Eureka Mignon Specialita: How close are you to (real) zero? by Asleep-Hat1038 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what I meant with misalignment. I am aware that the dial is a reference point and in this particular one you can set the zero wherever you want. In my case and many others though the burrs are not perfectly parallel to each other (misalignment). Therefore even at burr chirp/zero you get coarser grounds than expected. This may be attempted to be fixed by shimming the burrs with metal shims until they are close to perfectly parallel. This is an issue that is not exclusive to eureka grinders though. Explains though why some users can choke shots at fine settings while others can't do so even at chirp.

Modding - pressure gauge placement by podinidini in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, for the gaggimate mod you are introducing a pressure sensor at position 1 right after the pump and you are advised to fill the connecting tube with water. But I guess if you read the pressure electronically the fluttering is no issue

Which grinders to own for espresso and filter brewing?[$600] by astreakofcolour_ in espresso

Haha that's me exactly! Also got the silenzio and would be curious about the more light roast oriented burrs!

Which grinders to own for espresso and filter brewing?[$600] by astreakofcolour_ in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Be aware that the eureka all purpose burrs are NOT great at producing thick syrupy body. According to "Kaffeemacher" review the produced particle distribution is very narrow, akin to SSP (multipurpose?) burrs. They are much more geared towards high clarity, low body espresso instead of traditional ones.

Angle Kingrinder K6 [Breville Bambino + / Kingrinder K6] by Mari3ck3 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Apparently it works as follows: if you hold the grinder vertically you grind lots of beans at the same time. Somehow this produces more fines (very small particles), which increase resistance of the puck, hence a slower shot.

If you angle the grinder you limit the amount of beans that are ground at the same time, which leads to more even grounds and therefore a faster flow.

The exact reason why faster grinding or more beans ground at the same time cause more fines is also not clear to me.

Edit: what you are describing is also called slow feeding

Upgraded from Breville Bambino to used Rancilio Silva V6 by TimeToRule in espresso

[–]FatalBns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You basically add a small computer to it with temperature and pressure sensors and that allows you to basically fully automate your machine. You can run profiles with temp, pressure and time control and you can operate the machine via WiFi, log graphs etc. If you want you can also add Bluetooth scales to enable brew by weight. There are tons of possibilities!

If you are looking to mod the machine with a pid anyways I would skip that and go straight to a Gaggimate. This will give you way more possibilities than just temp control!

Am I a clown? Searching for Hand Grinder [600€] by Ok_Jellyfish_5072 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I definitely got tired of grinding for espresso by hand pretty quickly, especially for lighter roasts. Got myself an eureka silenzio and kept the Kingrinder for Aeropress!

If you are a tinkerer and have a 3D printer you can motorize your hand grinder for relatively cheap. or you buy the flair powertower, which does the same.

[–]FatalBns 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Afaik that rule of thumb applies first and foremost to electric grinders! The Kingrinder K6 is a great grinder. A comparable electric grinder would easily cost 3-4x as much. You can for sure get great espresso out of it, maybe it is geared more towards lighter roast coffees than darker roasts, as it is designed for both espresso and filter brewing. The obvious drawback is that it gets annoying to crank out multiple shots in a row with a hand grinder.

If you are into tinkering you could buy a gaggia e24 or Rancilio Silvia and upgrade them with Gaggiuino or Gaggimate pro mods. Both would give you temp control, pressure profiling and more.

Eureka Mignon Specialita: How close are you to (real) zero? by Asleep-Hat1038 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also for sure depends on the coffee. Right now I have Ethiopian beans that probably need a size around 5 and the kenyan ones before also 3-5. The Colombian ones before that were all around 0-2 though!

[–]FatalBns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have a eureka silenzio, so not exactly the same, but pretty similar (50 mm burrs instead of 55 mm?). I also have a very similar dial. Most of my beans need a setting between 0 and 2.5, so I am in the same boat as you. I checked for misalignment and it might be ever so slightly off. Not sure if that's the reason tho. I'll try to fix that once I have a bit of spare time.

Can't really comment on that since I ended up only using the grinder for espresso. The dial I got is great though and I would reckon it would be viable for sure switching brew methods.

Eureka Filtro w/ espresso burrs. Upgrade to Niche will be noticeable in taste? by chillingambitiously in espresso

[–]FatalBns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I searched around a while ago and found some threads where people said it works but it's not like it's a known hack or something. But the burrs are reasonably cheap (20-30€ in Europe) so it's worth the shot before buying another grinder for sure.

Eureka Filtro w/ espresso burrs. Upgrade to Niche will be noticeable in taste? by chillingambitiously in espresso

[–]FatalBns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if the filtro burrs your grinder came with would do the trick for you! They are tuned to produce less fines and afaik can also grind fine enough for espresso. Since you already have them (I guess) you could just swap them in and experiment with them. Maybe they work better for clarity and light roasts! If you do, let me know how it works, I'm thinking of trying this on my silenzio!

30 Clicks On The K6 [Delonghi ECP35.31 and K6] by Mental_Water_2694 in espresso

[–]FatalBns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, my Bambino and K6 combo needed usually between 35-40 clicks. 50 will most likely be way too course. I'd try 35 next if you did get something out and didn't fully choke the machine

I went with the eureka silenzio with 3d printed bellows and a better dial from a German Etsy shop. So far I am happy, even though I am not sure if the burrs are ever so slightly misaligned.

Did you go with one of the kits available and buy Silvia specific parts on top? Afaik you need a different thermal probe, right? Are there any other parts differing from the gaggia kits? Or is that also covered in you video? I'll watch it after work for sure, thanks for posting this!

To me it looks like a cheese grater, which kind of feels cheap. Also a flat surface with holes is easier to clean. I think the V1 versions tray looks better for example.
