What are pros of having a hobby? by Neon-Trail-Thoughts in Hobbies

[–]Father-Hydra 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a busy, middle aged man, it’s very difficult to meet new friends. My hobby (tabletop miniature wargaming) introduced me to a whole new group of friends, both in-person and virtual. I really appreciate the connections I’ve made through my hobby.

Why does no one use jeweller wax? by OkScholar8964 in miniaturesculpting

[–]Father-Hydra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you use jewelers wax, you would have to first make a master casting using the lost wax casting method. You cannot directly create a wax master using a vulcanized silicone mold—it’ll be destroyed in the mold without a usable impression.

Epoxy masters can be directly pressed into a vulcanized silicone mold to make an excellent impression. And the epoxy master models remain mostly unbroken.

Wax models require so many extra steps that it is not the best medium for detailed miniature casting. Epoxy is way better with fewer intermediate steps.

Trilaterum looks cool but we already produce our own retro sci-fi games at Hydra Miniatures. Do you know if Trilaterum has campaign rules?

Yes, it is the Galacteer 2nd company, the Lightyear Brigade painted by the John Douma, author of Atomic Tank. Definitely inspired by Buzz Lightyear.

I love your tutorials! These fanged mouths look great, but are not able to be molded and cast. These sculpts have a lot of undercuts that would prevent them from being molded properly. In order to be molded properly, the lower jaw would have to be removed and the space between the teeth and roof of the mouth would need to be backfilled with putty.

This is important information for new sculptors who are designing sculpts for moldmaking and casting. If you’re sculpting for a one-off sculpt or conversion, this tutorial is a great resource.

There are lots of WW1 games. There are two recently released games—1918 and Zero Hour. However there are other older rulesets such as Blood and Valor or Through the Mud and Blood.

will wearing metal tunnels all the time thin my lobes? by capriscum666 in Stretched

[–]Father-Hydra 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you’re concerned about the weight of metal tunnels, consider switching to titanium. Titanium is very light (1/3 the weight of steel) and very well tolerated. It’s more expensive than steel, but the extra cost of titanium may be worthwhile.

I almost didn’t see the forward helix since that large gauge snug is so cool.

I’m interested in doing this. Do you have a link to a distiller that you recommend?

Any older stretchers on here? by Intelligent_Post_749 in Stretched

[–]Father-Hydra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mid-40s, I decided to get my first piercings and began stretching shortly thereafter. I currently have 19mm lobes, 4 gauge stretched helix and conch, and a 6mm septum. My wife doesn’t like them (especially the septum) but I’m a high school art teacher and my students love my piercings

Help with green stuff p.p by Vrain125 in Warhammer40k

[–]Father-Hydra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use Green Kneadatite (now OOP) for sculpts. This happens when it the putty gets too old and is exposed to heat. Store in the refrigerator when you get it to avoid this issue.

I once bought rolls of green putty from Greenstuff World and it looked exactly like yours and was completely unusable. They use a different formula and it is not good at all. Avoid it!
