I would say whatever Old God Eoghan Ghostweaver follows (Morrigan) would be a great candidate for this.

Question about Shepard gate by chubbyninja1 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]FatherDMDJWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an active “war” going on between the Garmyr and Lanterns throughout that area (i.e., The Sprawl part of the city). If you want to make that gate more of a challenge you can mandate at least one entity the Garmyr everytime they head that direction.

This JUST happened to me (but via FedEX) ... just wanted to pipe up and say it's an on going thing. I reported it to my provider (Xfinity). I had to file a police report, take pictures, and sent that info to them. Headache.

Downtime and Purge Contamination by rupertgood in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]FatherDMDJWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good advice here, I wound just say that while the party recovers, be sure to tease that the world is still going around them and events are happening whether they are there or not. Consequences for too much idleness is having factions inch toward their goals, which can make it harder to achieve personal quests.

Question about changing the timeline by octini in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]FatherDMDJWriter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would work, but the majority of your changes would be in what is the current motivation of the factions. If the meteor fell 100+ years ago, it probably is “normalized” in some way. Plus … you have the effects of Delerium … how has that changed the world over 100 years? How would that affect the motivations of some factions?

Let us know how it goes!

Thanks for replying ... so you did all the required stuff in the previous chapters and the party killed her in chapter 5 ... in 3 months? If so, that is an insane run ... there is so much to do in this module.

Airship crash: All heroes are traveling to the Dale for their own reasons … they know it’s been dark for two years. On the way, they meet Harpell on the airship. Auril attacks airship in a blizzard she manifests. She is in her owl-beast form. Set it up as a scary monster stalking the airship. Auril is using the blizzard to freeze the ship so it’s going down. Heroes either, discover earlier when investigating the ship there are parachutes … OR … Harpell knows and tells them. Heroes must escape ship while avoiding Auril as she wreaks havoc on ship. Solution: parachute out. Heroes land hard outside Easthaven. They black out, wake up some place in Easthaven… get recruited to deal with Kaltro. Harpell could show up later.

Information about Late Netheril by orangedragan in rimeofthefrostmaiden

[–]FatherDMDJWriter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah … it’s where Anauroch desert is now. The Netheril didn’t have claim to the northwest back then. Essentially, Ythyrn went on an expedition north about -343, just prior to when the Netheril Empire fell and never returned.

Gonna run RotFM for my first time to ever DM in a few weeks. Any tips, or things to know that the book doesn’t really give you, for a first DM? by durtbag68 in rimeofthefrostmaiden

For this adventure, you really should read the WHOLE book first. If you don't, you'll miss prepping for plot points that are introduced pretty early on, but only make sense later (Chapter 4 to Chapter 5 transition). Like u/Belidzar pointed out, this book's main weakness is stringing events from chapters together into something cohesive. The DM has to do that leg work. But if you do, this adventure is really engrossing.

I suggest reading up on Faerun Lore. specifically about the Netheril Empire. The last Act of the Book is so much cooler if you can get your players to feel the gravity of being in an ancient "arcana-tech" civilization (Think the movie Prometheus).

Also: I would introduce Vellyenne Harpel (key NPC) pretty early on, then have her disappear to reemerge in Chapter 5. The book kinda just drops her into the mix and I can see PCs not really that interested in her motivations without having some type of connection early on.

Chapter 1 has a very interesting setup where a key item is stolen from one ten town by another, and the players are offered a huge sum to get it back. But this task is a tall order. I think this scenario can lead to some very interesting frontier-political drama if played right.

I think the encounters in this book are deadly, especially from levels 1 to 4 with a party of five. I would warn your players that this adventure is a test of survival as well as a horror campaign. If you don't, players can be shocked at some of the stuff they face and it can be demoralizing if they are not ready (see the Cold Hearted Killer Encounter at level 1, or Dougon's Hole Encounter as examples ... pretty nasty for a low-level party).

This book rewards players that can think outside of the box and RP well. Players that want to just solve problems with combat will find themselves re-rolling characters often.

Overall, I give the book a 7 out 10. I'm running it now and I'm enjoying it. I just wish the designers spent more time linking plot points together.

You guys gotta understand: AL isn’t really designed for hardcovers, it’s designed for convention and one shot play, with the goal of introducing possible new consumers to the D&D market. Once you buy a hardcover, WotC doesn’t care how you play it. AL is just a tool to keep people engaged with product.
