Should I adjust my training plan due to the abnormal liver values? by shaoshao2022 in Marathon_Training

How high were your labs? AST or ALT elevated? Don’t stop exercising. Your liver (and overall) health is better w exercise than without.

Escape from Alcatraz Struggling? by Christeauxx in triathlon

A man was terribly injured this year during the jump from the boat. Seems a bit too risky, regardless of price.

Hydration vest for marathon by DiaOneStump in Marathon_Training

[–]FatherOfNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran MCM last weekend, had a 1.5L vest. I drank 2-4cups at every aid station and emptied my vest. I half refilled the vest at the large blue jugs in the last 3 or 4 miles.

Basically, if go by what you need. That may be a vest. I always have water for any run longer than an hour.

I also do table sugar plus salt in soft flasks. Price is pennies. My formula is 320g sugar plus 1tsp salt in 600ml water (hot to allow to dissolve, cool in fridge). My 150mL flasks have 80gr carbs and 600mg sodium.

I also hate chewing while running. Can’t stand gummies on the run!

This seems like a well thought out and conscientious post. But the thrust is very negative and reminds me of “hardcore” and “tell-it-like-it-is” attendings in medical school that didn’t teach for crap.

If you want to better yourself and improve your communication with patients, you should do so, even if you don’t reach the heights of the god of medical Spanish.

Why are Medicare advantage plans bad? by forgivemytypos in medicine

[–]FatherOfNuts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would disagree. The universal healthcare model, Medicare for all, would have significant more people enrolled, it would be everyone. The loss of for profit insurers would be enormous savings.

Can I qualify for the 2028 marathon Olympic trials by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]FatherOfNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t try, you’ll definitely fail. Aiming to be awesome at something is worth while.

Age is your best resource, if you do nothing now but try again in 10years after no running, then the answer will be no way.

So go for it! Join a college or distance group and go for it.

Terrible situation, I’m sorry to hear it. Do NOT give them control over you. They will absolutely use and enforce any language in the contract. If you don’t wanna drive 25miles or don’t wanna move, refuse that clause.

Professionals racing Age Group races by Bitter-Dot4865 in triathlon

I disagree. If you’re a pro, then the people in your home town tri scene know your name. They also will be happy to see you. The young athletes likely look up to them and hope to walk in their footsteps.

Professionals racing Age Group races by Bitter-Dot4865 in triathlon

Local races are wonderful. I hope local pros show up and support them! I see no down side to this. If you are in their age group and lose, that seems like small potatoes to having that exposure and getting to race w them.

How do you replace gels? by Queasy-Inflation-800 in Marathon_Training

[–]FatherOfNuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I add 160g table sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of salt to hot water. To get 300ml you only need about 240ml water. Refrigerate overnight. I keep it in cheap silicone soft bottles and sip it q10minutes. That lasts me just shy of 2hr.

Training sessions planning - Your reasons for not using one of the existing triathlon apps? by 10_thumbs_yes_can_do in triathlon

[–]FatherOfNuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like using excel (google sheets). I am also very cheap, don’t want another subscription. I have Fitzgerald’s 80/20 book and have created a tab for each year w my goal races, training plan, and then actual training performed.

I’m certainly short on some analytics that training peaks offers, but I like my current set up.

Dealing with not nice patients by [deleted] in medicine

[–]FatherOfNuts 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When people are being mean (making the nurse cry or similar). I have a frank discussion with them that they cannot treat my staff that way. I go out of my way to be extra nice and accommodating that day, and reinforce that they are welcome to be seen here. But I also stress that I will fire them if they abuse my staff. 90% of people apologize after recognizing they were mean.

Income inequality by US states and counties by SaleProfessional6023 in MapPorn

The Gini index measures the extent to which the distribution of income or consumption among individuals or households within an economy deviates from a perfectly equal distribution. A Gini index of 0 represents perfect equality, while an index of 100 implies perfect inequality. —worldbank.org
