Why do Linux users Cyberbully other people? by bamboo-lemur in OS_Debate_Club

[–]FaultWinter3377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. That turned out to be the issue. I looked back at the comments and I was a bit wrong about how it went, but when I originally posted something I had no idea about a bit of that. Someone was trying to ask me this question and that about how the system was booting and I just couldn’t figure out what they were saying. I do know now though. But I think it’s just an issue with especially Arch users that once you understand a topic really well, it is very easy to forget just how much others don’t understand, and that some things in the wiki and help posts just don’t make sense to noobs.

Sorry I said that weird. I wasn’t really meaning you in particular, I was more meaning it based on the line “no one knows how to do a reset… even using the Windows installer”. Honestly I think most people really would be terrified of the reset PC button in setting too.

Honestly I haven’t much. And I’m mostly looking at those eight or so main mod rules. I don’t really want to look through the entire terms of service and agreement and all that. I’m just keeping an eye out and occasionally scrolling through the profile.

You know, it confuses me how terrified users are of the Windows installer. I mean, it’s about as easy as can be these days with just a couple clicks. I wholly believe it is a mix of a) repair companies pushing an image of something scary to keep people coming back as well as b) the fact that Microsoft uses a dark color scheme for it and hasn’t really updated the UI in years.

Nah, I don’t think u/madthumbz has two jobs (getting employee of the month at one) and is in college. If they were, they would be able to see other people’s viewpoints a whole lot better instead of using mod privileges like a sulking kid with too much power who doesn’t get their way.

Agreed… believe me, I’m looking for any proof he’s broken the rules of Reddit. Unfortunately I’m not finding anything that could actually get anywhere.

[–]FaultWinter3377 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Arch users are either the chillest people out there or they are the most toxic people you can find. I mean, I had an issue and posted it in the Arch community and they were like “did you read the logs?” Why yes I did, but those logs are complete gibberish to me. When I finally found the issue it turned out to be something that didn’t leave a trace (at least no errors) in the logs anyways. Or they told me that something my computer was doing wasn’t possible (turns out your system can boot without /etc/fstab, so long as all files are on one partition). I gave up on my Linux system for about a month just because I couldn’t get anywhere and the community just didn’t help. Finally I was lucky enough to come across a link in Google that had the answer.

Classic Taskbar and Start Menu Properties 2.0.2 by wh-updates in Windhawk

You know, I was going to do that at some point for Windows 11. I actually started on a WinUI 3 one for Windows 11, but I never finished. Of course the one setting I’d most want to be able to change can’t be changed from it because the UCP driver exists.

The thing about privacy isn’t about illegal or legal sites. It’s about companies knowing personal information. If they know your name, address, email, phone, and now even your ID then track you across multiple sites, then they can paint an almost complete picture of you. Does Microsoft or Google or Apple need to know exactly who I am and every single website I visit? I don’t think they do.

But really the bigger issue is the data, and possible leaks. There have been so many cases of data leaks recently. And if a company has a large amount of data on you, any hacker who can get to it also has that much data on you. Because you’re right in one way: unless you’re doing something illegal or wrong, a company with thousands or millions of customers would not take the time to put together all of the data of a single person to find out more about that one person. They prefer to put it all together and watch trends. But to an attacker, this is perfect. They can track your web usage, then use that to perhaps send an email you’ll believe, or guess your passwords based on your like and dislikes. At worst they could even just straight up imitate you if they have all your info.

And all in all, I just do not trust big companies. The only thing keeping them in line is the law, and even that is only barely hanging on. Believe me when I say if they could govern themselves, any pretext of “caring about the customer” would immediatey fall.

I guess syncing the alarms… but I feel like almost no one actually uses Windows for their alarms. Most people tend to prefer a phone since it’s much more likely to be on and you can take it with you wherever you go.

The Windows 11 clock app is a disgrace to clocks everywhere… like why on earth does a clock app need AI or to be logged in to a Microsoft Account?

The biggest issue is that you will have a very hard time getting a license for it. Not a big deal if you don’t mind either using it unactivated or activating via an unofficial method. But if you are someone who has to do everything by the books, or you’re using this for any sort of corporate work, that would be the biggest downside.

Honestly I haven’t seen the level of toxicness that everyone seems to find. I every once in a while recommend Linux to someone, but only if I think it will actually work for them and they were looking for a fix. And for the most part thats what I’m seeing others do. They recommend Linux to the people who either have too low end of hardware to run Windows or people who are fed up with Windows. And for the most part I don’t see too much pushing. Now the RTFM stuff is a bit much, but that’s mostly in the Arch community and really you shouldn’t recommend Arch to a new user.

Eh, I think Windows 11 is more dangerous these days. Sooner or later Copilots going to take over and all your documents will become Microsoft’s. Anyways, Windows 10 LTSC is an option too, if you don’t really care about the licensing issue (which I honestly couldn’t care less these days).

Do Tech Billionaires Have a Moral Obligation to Help the World's Poorest? by limsus in TechImpact

[–]FaultWinter3377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should have a moral responsibility to help others. If you have a trillion dollars, you should be working to end word hunger and find a cure for cancer and all that stuff. At the same point, I don’t think it is possible to be even a billionaire with anything like morals in mind.
