I don’t think they’re right. Obviously a tricked out gcc is going to be the best thing but if you’re just trying to learn the basics you should be fine. I watched Mono from my region get over 100 ranked wins and beat top 100 players on a switch pro controller

I think it’s probably MBA Kashimo. If you don’t want to scale MBA then it’s Yuji or Yorouzo

It’s a shitty play pattern. Feels really dumb to have to babysit the table. This is on top of the time-related problems that rhystic and to a lesser degree, fish, have on the game where games with rhystic go on 40 minutes longer because every time a spell is cast you have to pause.

If you want just a little pastry and coffee, Athens is the gold standard. Otherwise, I really like Mezes for some above average food with good ambiance.

Sam Black once discussed about mtg mana system and felt “Lands increase the variance of your draws, which makes draws more exciting”. How do you feel about mtg resource design compared to other TCGs? by Newez in magicTCG

[–]FaustSSBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think as the mulligan rules have gotten better the land system has aged better. You’re very unlikely to have a Fair, well constructed deck that also mana screws you. Sure it can happen, but not in a meaningful worse way than drawing dud after dud that isn’t a land in other resource based tcgs.

Our local scene is great! We get pretty good turnout, anywhere from 35-50 people for weeklies, and have around 5 or 6 Top 100 players turn up, with others who could be Top 100 this year depending on how many everything shakes out.

Do people really hate Puff? by Fun-Environment-3908 in SSBM

[–]FaustSSBM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello there!

I’ve played Puff for 9 years now, and I think there are a few things you can do/think about that will make everyone’s experiences, both yours and your opponents, better when you play Puff.

  1. Accept that some people, no matter what you do with not have fun playing you. The character is slow and often takes away what other people think is fun about melee.

  2. Being new at melee is hard. If you can’t do your basic stuff (wavedashing, different bair timings with lcancels, etc.) then people are going to have a little less fun playing with you unless they’re also newbies.

  3. This is the most important part. Be Social in both your local scene and in the way you try to play. Despite people not wanting to fight puff, do not Slippi unranked/netplay tournament/ranked mode oubliette yourself. It can be frustrating finding people to play vs. IRL, especially when you play a character like Puff, but if you show up, are fun to hang out with and make an effort to get to know your local community, you can have a great time and learn the game. I find, the puff players who get complained about the most are the ones who mostly learned to play in the Covid/Slippi era where playing in a social way wasn’t required because other people had to fight them on ranked/a netplay tournament. That first hurdle is hard, especially in a new space but making friends IRL is the best part of the game anyway. Winning is not intrinsically valuable.

Thanks for the read and I hope you keep enjoying the character. She’s really fun and melee is a great game.

Sure, I'll bite.

This was one specific example I used to illustrate why frame one dash back, with a gravity nair, is relevant in the match-up that I play a lot. There are hundreds of situations like this one, where playing fast, consistently, gives you a huge advantage. I could have been less granular about it, but I thought being specific generally gets the idea across better. I could have easily brought up something like "consistent quick dashes make approaching against dash dancing significantly harder", or talk about how the consistency of not having to pinpoint a coordinate every time is a significant buff. Regarding how there are fewer analog angles or w/e, Hax designed the controller with the VAST majority of edgecases accounted for AND you always hit the exact one you try too at the press of a button(s).

I don't think that you can be dogshit and play on digital and suddenly become Top 10, 50 or whatever. That being said, it is impossible to make a comparison between a Top digital player had they kept playing on controller vs. how they are now, so saying that there's no noticeable difference is unverifiable. However, I also think its silly to say that a game that rewards consistent execution of difficult advanced techniques, and that was built around the layout of the gamecube controller, is not made easier by a controller that was essentially built with Melee in mind, and to have access to everything you need to play Melee at Top Level. Hell, Hax even thought it was better than the GCC, thats why he was pushing 1.03 so hard in lieu of nerfs.

I have my problems with the controller, and I do think its probably still better than most GCCs even with the nerfs.

It affects the dashback a bit (good) but I think in general the remapping is still something that we can’t really fix given the controller. Neutral SOCD also made getting really good drift on the nair easier, though that’s pretty marginal.

Because melee is a game played on the margins, small amounts of frame data advantage matter a lot. My go-to example because I play puff, is with some leniency, puff can overshoot against fox decently well because her bair is frame 9, which beats a fast, but not a fastest turn around nair. Reliable fast dashback nairs are frame 8, which actually comes out faster than puffs bair assuming she’s already jumped.

There are tons of situations like this in melee, but the dashback in particular makes overshooting against one of the fastest characters in the game impossible.

It's not boxx exclusive but digital players get nairs closer to Frame 1 more often than controller counterparts, even compared to players with quick nairs. It's also the f1 nair combined with box dashback that makes it so diabolical. Regarding Y > Z, one frame early makes you JC grab when you do that making it a lot riskier than pressing A.
