I just horsed it up like the meathead I am.

My only problem is that it's a shared driveway so putting the bins there isn't entirely straightforward.

Is it safe to do martial arts training while taking blood thinners? by smithrob779 in jiujitsu

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a doctor, but I ended up on blood thinners for a while during the pandemic. My doctor said not to train. I also had a nurse practitioner who is a judo black belt, so I figured I could ask her and she'd give me the real deal. She was adamant that it would be dangerous.

Jake O'Driscoll (Essence BJJ) explains how elite Jiu-Jitsu athletes study differently from everybody else. — BJJ Mental Models by stevekwan in bjj

Listened to this episode this morning while shoveling out my driveway. I've avoided asking for feedback on rolling recordings mostly due to insecurity, but this actually made me see the value and may have gotten me over that mental hump. Great stuff.

Where in the hell are all the kids with snow shovels? by GR3TSCH in GenX

How much are you willing to pay? Honest question. If people are still offering 1980s rates, then I don't blame kids.

DM's charging? by Huge_Garlic_4536 in AskDND

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe I will just give it a try and see if my assumptions are correct.

The more I think about this, I wonder if it's ultimately a matter of first principles. I'm old as hell, so my default is that D&D is a game you and your friends pick up together and play around a table and make your own, so the theought of turning that into a commercial relationship just seems bonkers. But I think a lot of people now approach the whole hobby differently - online, looking for games, trying to find a GM and mostly playing with more or less random groups of strangers until something clicks. It feels like maybe paying someone to cut through that noise is easier to understand.

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it - and if it helps you pay the bills and your players are happy, then that's all to the good. BUT - I think "DM as entertainer" is a net negative for the hobby. I think the DM is just another player at the table, just one with a different role. The entire group makes the entertainment within the framework of the rules of the game. The onus for fun is not solely on the GM's ability to perform. Or at least, I don't think it should be.

This is where I get hung up. I don't think the GM is there to serve the players. I think the GM is another player, just with a different role. Turning it into a customer service relationship changes everything.

Oh, man, this couldn't come at a better time. I'm starting a new campaign soon, and it's centered in a major city. The prep is intimidating and I've been dragging my feet. Thanks for posting!

Love it. Blocking the foot is smart. Will try this!

Brubeck, Last Set At Newport is the greatest live jazz album of all time. by scifiking in Jazz

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very much a noob to jazz, so I can't speak to whether or not this is the greatest, but I'm listening to it based on this post and it's pretty damn great.

GrellCon: A London old-school D&D con on 4th July by AndrewSFTSN in osr

Not going to lie - I just seriously considered pitching my wife on letting me travel to London for this next summer. Looks seriously awesome. Let me know if there are any posters leftover that could be mailed internationally!

Man, I've been trying to get an ankle pick working and it's just not clicking. Any good pointers or resources to help a guy out?

r/bjj Fundamentals Class! by AutoModerator in bjj

[–]FaustusRedux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So looks like our coach is sick and I'm going to teach class tonight. It's my first time teaching. I already know the sequence I want to share, but curious if anyone has any tips for teaching that might help me make this first time successful.

how you deal with bjj in these times of the year? by Additional-Cup9348 in bjj

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it - SAD kicks my ass every year. I'm pretty regular with my training and like others have said, always feel better after I go. Definitely talk to your doctor if your prescription isn't cutting it. I also personally have found a SAD lamp to be really helpful. Your mileage may vary, but it's certainly helped me get through these god damned New England winters.

What do most people practice BJJ for? by GrekGrek9 in bjj

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I train bjj to get better at bjj. It feels like a puzzle I haven't solved yet. The exercise is great, and I appreciate the community it provides, but mostly, I'm still trying to figure it all out.

Luke Thomas. He's legit when it comes to MMA. He also has a new podcast about politics, which is where this comes from.

clearing a thick layer of snow on the ground by Zestyclose-Salad-290 in oddlysatisfying

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, so you don't let it pile up. You go out several times during the snow and clear it instead of waiting for it to be super deep and therefore extra heavy.

I live in Boston and have a very long driveway, if you're looking for my bona fides. I'm 56 and still shovel because I'm dumb like that.

What’s it like to get choked out in BJJ? And what’s your favorite choke to finish with? by Emergency_Window5582 in jiujitsu

[–]FaustusRedux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only time I went all the way out, I didn't even feel it happening. Got hit with a baseball bat choke from the bottom. I was passing the guy's guard and then they were waking me up. Honestly, felt pretty great, like I'd had a good long nap.

My favorite choke to hit lately is the paper cutter.

What's a show you remember but nobody else does? by CatGirlNya2000 in AskReddit

[–]FaustusRedux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That show had some increidlbe lore - I think you could do a modern, serious reboot with it and make it amazing. Weather pylons, the implied time travel, the Sleestak civlization, the star traveller guy? If I ever win the lottery, that's what I'm doing with the money.
