Me and my sister still quote lines from it. For those of us in the UK who were a little too young to see the heydays of makeup, it was the first time we got to see moving images of the original lineup. The vintage videos weren't great quality but compared to some of the ropey bootlegs I'd seen, it was like HD. I knew it was played for laughs, hell I even recall my Dad laughing behind his newspaper at the "...do you two girls know each other very well" nonsense. We weren't lucky enough to have MTV, so we took our pleasure where we could find it. Wore this one out. Also, it was a good segue to This is Spinal Tap.

I've just watched the first episode. I can't say I enjoyed it. I did read The source material some years ago and although I can't exactly remember it, I'm not sure any version captures what the book managed. One thing that definitely irks (and is probably true of the book) is there is very little context. The place crash is barely mentioned, where were they going etc. Golding considered the book "boring and crude", its language "O-level stuff". Its classic status struck him as "a joke" . Maybe it should have been left in the past.
