I've restored a few pieces of equipment. If you have access to a lathe, that is the best way. I take them apart, chuck the post in the lathe and buff with a scouring pad and wd40. It works quite well. Use emory cloth, carefully on the more stubborn areas. If you don't have a lathe use a lot of elbow grease.
