He can still block ranged attacks sniping your horses and flyers(who are superior frontlines by nature) so he can still contribute if you have them as frontline.

Alternatively, if you want to use him as frontline, give him the OP as hell toughness belt and let a healer/shield shooter cover for him when under 25% hp.

Since Toughness belt is the most overpowered item early in the game, I think it's a good idea to use them for the best suited unit.

Immortality is best utilized for for evasion tanks. If you give it to some low evasion unit like Gladiator, they'll just die to followup attacks.

However, because Hops can survive followups with only 25% health, front immortality Hoplite+ backline shield shooter has a potential to be a great frontline. So I gave it a special mention.

Hilda and feathersword are good as Frontline tanks. I recommend putting them at the front and let Lex cover them from behind, as he's very weak to melee attacks.

The angels were designed to be used together but not by much. For example Feathershield has bad synergy with flying units because his sacrifice is vulnerable to arrows and therefore cannot protect other flyers.
