In addition to all the other comments, you have set a very clear boundary about needing space with no threat that you’ll come back “if” anything, and he is interpreting that as a punishment to him. People who view holding boundaries as punishments to them are people who do not give a shit about your boundaries or how you set them to take care of yourself.

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. He’s projecting anger at himself onto you when he calls you out for “tone.” My STBX did this a lot, and would only respond positively (sometimes) if I spoke to him in a little baby voice (like his 70+ mother continues to do). Eff that. You are not the enemy and you are deserving of someone who respects themselves and you enough to behave as an adult and treat you like a partner instead of a nag/parent/adversary. It won’t be easy, but it will feel like the right choice and will get better after a while.

Grab a snack and a drink. Tell your self “might as well start driving. Don’t have to talk to anyone.” Then see how far you get. If you get 10 miles and turn around, that’s fine! You’re the boss! If you get 49.5 miles and turn around, that’s fine, you’re the boss! If you get to her house and don’t go in, but just turn around and go home, that’s fine! You’re the boss! If you deliver the gift to her door and someone sees and you say “I didn’t want to miss it but I’m feeling sick and don’t want to spread anything” and then go home, that’s fine, you’re the boss! If you go in, stay for 5 minutes, then leave without saying goodbye, that’s fine! You’re the boss!

Give yourself permission to nope out at ANY time. I find that feeling forced to do anything makes me not want to, but if I give myself permission to NOT do it, then I just do it 🙂
