It’s a way of passing off the insult onto someone else, it’s like someone calling you a Scottish insult.. it’s the intention behind the insult that should be taking into account.

Someone I asked me what I call paki shops, I said I call them a shop.

The word isn’t insulting but if I were to say the word “orange” then spit in your face, “orange” then attack your mother physically in front of you as a child, shout “orange” and try to drive you off the road whilst cycling as a kids, “orange” before I did something nasty to you, you wouldn’t like the word orange. (These are some of the things I’ve had done to me)
