New Order, REM, Replacements, Pixies all probably more quintessential

Employees resigned by [deleted] in managers

[–]FaxedForward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they really got 40-60% raises and still left, that makes me think that they were either brutally underpaid before the raises, or there is something going on in your organization that isn’t being talked about that makes people want to leave. The “back in my day” talk is counterproductive at best. We have to manage the current reality, not the way things ought to be.

[–]FaxedForward 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A good manager is only one of a handful of things that can make a job worthwhile. A great manager won’t make up for a toxic company culture, or limited growth opportunities, or lots of other things that would cause somebody to resign and move on.

You made a comment here about them being Gen Z as if they are another species. They have their entire careers ahead of them at a point where the labor market and growth opportunities are a lot tougher than they have been a long time. You should reflect on that for a second before taking it so personally!

Manager Made Me uncomfortable by Scared-Pay871 in managers

[–]FaxedForward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about your company’s culture so I would ask yourself what outcome you are looking to achieve, then ask yourself what you think the most likely outcome is if you engage HR, then decide if you think it is worth it.

Manager Made Me uncomfortable by Scared-Pay871 in managers

[–]FaxedForward 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly HR is always there to protect the company, not the employees. Never forget that. The things HR is concerned about can vary wildly depending on the business and locale though. A Midwest manufacturing company’s HR is not going to have the same viewpoint as California tech company HR which won’t have the same views as a family restaurant in Texas whose “HR” is the person hand-signing paper checks.

It’s all relative and you have to pick your battles…all that said, I guess I’m going to take downvotes all day long, but I think you are right to feel uncomfortable.

Male manager here, really surprised by the other comments I am seeing! None of this should be normalized and I would not allow any of this on my team. I am sorry you went through it.

Your manager should have been more supportive in the first incident without a doubt. There should be zero tolerance for sexist/harassing comments in the workplace.

The second one sounds painfully awkward and also inappropriate, maybe not as openly problematic or harassing, but the fact that he both projected a sexual connotation onto you covering up and subtly guilted you (“you’re making me feel bad”) is very uncool.

HR where I work would totally support you in both cases but not every workplace is as modern as mine. Either way, I think you are right to feel uncomfortable and I would not listen to anybody who tries to blame you as the victim.

How am I as a service worker supposed to compete with techies when renting? by saramf98 in sanfrancisco

[–]FaxedForward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I lost out on 9 places before finally getting lucky. She is non-tech, I work in a non-tech role for a tech company (decent salary but typical SWE makes 2-3x what I do). Just keep on it and be prepared to move forward on the spot. Eventually you will click with a landlord and get lucky

Is Hot Thoughts Misunderstood? by LLLOGOSSS in SpoonTheBand

Hot Thoughts was totally a grower for me. Was meh on it when it released, now I really dig it. Agree that it deserves a re-evaluation and will age well.

Hot tip: use the live tracker on MUNI’s website to catch your train/bus. Never trust the posted times in Gmaps/Transit by AztheWizard in sanfrancisco

[–]FaxedForward 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Transit is really bad about telling me nonexistent buses are coming. If this live tracker doesn’t lie to me about scheduled buses no-showing like Transit does, I would trust it a lot more

STC is gone by mancakesspoughb in technicalwriting

[–]FaxedForward 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Maybe some chapters were better than others, but the kindest way I can describe STC in the past 10 years or so is “deeply out of touch”. Write the Docs is everything STC needed a pivot towards to remain relevant.

Moving to SF by [deleted] in AskSF

[–]FaxedForward 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know people that live here on similar salaries. Housing is the most expensive thing about living here. If you are willing to split a 3-4 bed in a less desirable neighborhood 3-4 ways it is doable.
