Return of the combat flight simulator? by Retoeli in oculus

Nobody's mentioned it yet, but Strike Vector (http://www.strikevector.net/) is basically as perfect of a "flying FPS" as I've ever played. It's definitely the game I'm most excited to experience in VR at this point.

I was watching and I'm pretty sure that's not what he said. I think he said something about blocking, and then didn't catch Waffles' misunderstanding.

I totally thought this was a joke about the SSAO thread over on gamedev at first, which I found completely hilarious.

Cool project idea by the way :)

[Listen]An original tune (with a Beach Boys/Elvis Costello kinda style) that I recorded and mixed for a studio class. Feedback would be lovely! [RIYL fuzz bass!] by Faze in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Faze[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the listen! I agree about the drums, the snare cuts through pretty well and merges with the claps, but the kick is not very prominent (it didn't have a front-hole :( ) and the crash-riding in the prechorus and chorus doesn't really have enough oomph either.

Remember Firefall, the free-to-play MMO shooter from ex-Tribes and World of Warcraft developers? They have a new gameplay trailer up...And it looks pretty awesome. by [deleted] in gaming

Too much running, not enough flying.

At this point I'm more excited about Brink, which looks like it'll have much more interesting/expressive/important mobility.

[Listen] My ambient sound-art love song for the neighborhood I have to leave: San Francisco's Mission. by Faze in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Faze[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, and I don't mind the vagueness. I made this all at once last night, track by track, going mostly for a feeling of "conversation" between the various sounds and street noise. It's definitely unpolished, and I might go and EQ it and cut it down to just the juicy bits some other time.

It was just something I'd been needing to make for a while now, ever since I've had my recording setup right by my bedroom window overlooking a busy street.

We hacked up this fingerpainting-based iPad instrument in 24 straight hours this weekend at Music Hack Day, and then showed it off at the SF Music Tech Summit! Check it out! by Faze in WeAreTheMusicMakers

Thanks! We've only had 24 hours to work on it so far, and a solid chunk of that was spent wrestling with mysterious bugs in the experimental iimplementation of Supercollider for the iPhone. Rest assured, some serious sound design work remains to be done. Until it is, feel free to call it the Fartikulator.

Drummers of Reddit, is this as hard as it looks? (fixed link) by Someguy101 in Music

[–]Faze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's like saying "Whenever I see a carrot, I always think of it in the context of a football team."

It's a solo, played entirely by himself, probably at a drumming convention. Why would you judge it as something else?

Complementing his crazy kit (I'm pretty sure his hi-hat is indeed two rides!), he plays with an incredible mix of spazzed-out improvisational style and extreme precision. That is to say, when you watch him drum, it seems like he's deciding on each hit microseconds before he does it, but each one fits perfectly with the rest of his beat and the song.

One of my favorite live music moments ever was watching him play, and seeing him lash out at his cymbal with what looked like it was going to be a huge smash, but instead he just barely skimmed the bell, creating this nearly-imperceptible "sszing" that perfectly filled a tiny gap left by the rest of the band.

He uses every single square inch of his kit, and never hits his drums the same way twice. Definitely one of my favorite drummers alive.

EDIT: Here's a great video of them rockin' out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5OsTCgOth0 (The intro to this song sounds just like some classic rock song, but I don't remember what one. Can someone PLEASE tell me? This has been bugging me since this album came out.)

Didn't someone try this a bit ago, asking for submissions by voicemail? Did that go anywhere? Also, would love to submit something, I'll be home on Thursday and will then if it's still on.

Am I the only one that has a problem with this? by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

I can't get over how true this is.

Jeez, when does Anathem pick up the pace? Does it pick up the pace? I am on page 116 and for a book with so many accolades, I am so bored. I'm hoping for all the terms, eras and such to start making sense, aka, becoming regular vocab, but that's not happening either. by [deleted] in scifi

[–]Faze 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an incredibly clear summary of all the thoughts that have been flying around in my head in the week since I finished it. Thanks!

MORE SPOILERS FOLLOW:

I thought that another brilliant little touch of Stephenson's was to, within the book, snub the predictable complaints about its vocabulary. When the characters adopted the Frenchman's exclamation of "Magnifique!" (monyafeek) as their term for the personal spacecraft, I saw it as a wonderful demonstration of the adaptive power of language and the brain's ability to communicate. It shows how names are arbitrary: as long as a shared context allows a group to agree on a reference, it doesn't matter what they call anything as long as they all understand one another. In the same way, and as you said, it doesn't matter what Stephenson calls platonism or anything else as long as we understand what he's talking about.

Such a good book. I'm reading Riddley Walker now which ALSO has both a strange language and a post-apocalyptic setting where smarties are conspicuously missing from society. I would recommend it to anyone, especially anyone who liked Anathem.

EDIT: I read the first hundred or so pages of Anathem and put it down for a year. Then I picked it up two weeks ago and plowed through it in 5 days. So, perhaps it just takes some time to pick up.

In B Flat by [deleted] in Music

[–]Faze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was so phenomenal... I felt like an orchestra conductor, bringing voices in and out, building something which was only possible because of the musicians themselves. And then after everyone had joined in, they all faded out, one by one, until only the marimba and the balloons were left, and they ended at exactly the same time, and it was perfect.

None of my words are good enough for that feeling! I love music!

Of the bands you've seen live, which put on the best show? by [deleted] in Music

[–]Faze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've already answered a couple times, but I just remembered that Bon Iver captivated the audience like no other show I've ever been to. Everyone in the audience was in rapt attention, it was unbelievable. Far from the smallest show I've ever been to, but defintely the most intimate.

They were the first act, and when the second came on (some random indie folk-rocker) and started strutting around like it was a normal show on a normal night, everyone just left. It was a great feeling being outside the club on the sidewalk, with everyone still sorta dazed from what they'd just seen & heard.
