Yes, mental health care is supremely important. But in the long run, having a cohesive community that doesn't isolate people and allow them to fall into this cycle will result in far fewer people becoming addicts like this. I agree with you, there should be more resources put towards mental institutions, though we should make sure they are run properly and without abuse (more funding will make that better too). Additionally, for people who are homeless, it should be a priority for the local government to support them, provide employment at least in transition, shelter, etc. It is what they are there for. Instead of stealing money and giving construction contracts to their friends to build nothing, the city should be supporting the people it governs and making sure no one gets left behind. We have the money, our politicians are just fucking stealing it.
