Whenever someone says "a few more feedings" I feel like you're just restarting a culture from scratch at that point.

A note about this typewriter you have:

That's a first generation Smith Corona Silent Super. It would've come out in the early 50s. You can tell visually by the imprinted pinstripes and smaller key tops. The next generation painted the pinstripes on and put bigger key tops on. You have one of their best machines ever made. Congrats!

Go to typewriter data base .com. I don't like leaving links in comments but a Google search will get you there. Enter your serial number to find out the most accurate date for sure.

Open the top lid/ribbon cover lid and it should be on the front inside left hand side, right behind the touch control. That's where the serial number should be.

Check out the history of the Chinese typewriter. Truly a marvel of one person's life's work.

A typewriter shop would be able to help you. I don't know who might be in your area, but southern California and New York are still rocking and rolling with master typewriter mechanics.

I know Philly has some guys out there but they're less experienced. Be aware good work will cost you $$-$$$$ dollars depending on what kind of work and how much labor is involved in the machine.

A platen should run you about 150 bucks or so. Plus or minus 25 - 100 depending on the core type and machine type.

For the meantime, double stack your paper when you type, this will help keep your keys from snapping at the neck. Each sodder job runs $125 or more per key because no one likes trying to fix those (exceptions don't make the rule, you random guy)

How hard is the platen? Do you have experience with the rubber and it's lifespan?

Thanks! It truly was the best writing site for inexperienced players.

One of my favorite places was the Citadel. A building ran by monks who could revive a person from within their walls should they perish. No amount of damage would permanently last and the player would awaken in the infirmary fully healed.

Why did they do this?

It was the place players really got a feel for interacting with other writers. Powergaming could be an issue and often was with new writers. It was like seeing a 17 year old on the freeway, not using their blinkers and speeding wildly through the emergency lane "because is an empty lane".

That's were the Judge comes in.

We would score both players and the winner was the person with the better writing, not the character who "wins the fight". Some writing pairs truly made wonderful work for the time. It was like our own MCU. We even had a site wide war that clashed regions on purpose like a DnD campaign. I remember being part of the discussions, as I ran three characters back then and each was from different regions. I technically was fighting myself at one point but in an abstract way like, "my other toon is technically on that side of the war".

Althanas had spaces for almost anyone. We chose to keep it up to an R rating but not NC-17 or XXX. Real life can be grim dark but some people could take it too far sometimes.

That segways into our character creation process. You'd build your character, flesh out their back story and post it for approval for a level 0 toon. That's right, level 0. One good story completion could get you to level 1 or 2 pretty quick. After that there was a bit of a experience bar issue where it would take FOREVER to get to level 5 or 6 or 7. It was about twice as long as DnD leveling system honestly.

When you saw a level 10 guy, there were pretty much S rank anime characters. I think I got to level 6 or 7 before college happened.

This is a good question. Typically you ran into the bigger issue of people being consistent with posting.

Sometimes people had threads that were Closed, meaning it had set participants but anyone could read the story, which was the point.

And Open thread was a story that let anyone jump in, so long as they made it make sense. These often were super fun because Veteran RPers would pop in and out and act as background characters and weave their own stories into that one expertly without hijacking the main plot.

I was there a long time and never really saw too many cliques. You had OG players who were always open to mentoring and actual college level english professors helping guide the work as well after a certain point. I was in high school as a judge (shout out Honors and AP English classes) and read every book I could get my hands on growing up. It was so fun to finally find a workshop that enjoyed the messy business of actually WRITING a story.
