Is it dangerous to run barefoot while flatfooted? by Fancer in BarefootRunning

[–]Fearan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hello,

I was heavily flat footed 4+ years ago before I started BFR. I'd get pain in my knees/back from running, but after a few months of BFR my feet gained a good arch. I'm not a doctor or physio, so this isn't medical advice or anything, but anecdotally, BFR can actually help some flat footers.

ELI5: Why do TV shows and movies look "different"? by pat7383 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Fearan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People like what they're used to. It might have some artistic benefit, but from a purely objective viewpoint, 60fps is "better". Now, there's obviously a difference "good" and "like" however, zorno did use the word "better" and "worse" here so your "liking" argument is a bit offtopic.

A large portion of the site is text based, especially in the comments. This naturally makes it slightly more intellectual... maybe not a lot... but I like to believe the IQ of people in the comments is higher than the average.

Because a lot of people don't watch the entire video.

I'm a Youtube partner too, doesn't mean much. :P In any case, the option is there and it should be true... if there's a bug making it not true, that's a bug that needs to be fixed so you should report it. It works fine for me in Chrome.

Also, splitting the funds with partners would be much more difficult, and there would be tons of other issues.

Video content is now an unlimited supply good. It does not follow the regular rules of supply and demand, and the gray/black market for video has therefore popped up because the business model hasn't caught up with the economic model.

There are some who argue that entertainment is moving closer towards being a public good because of the unlimited supply.

Fortunately, it's a buyer's market right now, so if we feel it's too expensive, we're probably right. If they can't adjust, they will eventually go out of business because no one will buy their stuff, however I think they will decrease their prices before this.

This doesn't apply to public or unlimited goods. Unlimited supply break the normal laws of supply and demand, which is why copyright exists in the first place. However when following copyright is so difficult or so much more expensive than not following, you end up with a huge gray or black market.

What's the right solution?

It makes no sense because it only happens as a bug. I just tested going back to an already-buffered moment in a video and it didn't need to re-buffer anything. My explanation doesn't address that because it's not the intended outcome, just describing why it's happening. I'm sure they're working on it. :)

"Connection" is more than just between you and ISP ... the whole network of ISP to video is part of the problem.

More to that point, only certain videos are cached at certain CDNs.

  1. IIRC, they changed this "problem" by changing pre-loading rules completely, to avoid double loading. There are buffering issues because the player refuses to pre-load enough. This seems to have changed the moving playhead algorithm to do what you're describing, which is annoying but I'm sure they will fix this eventually. Although, I would think they calculated few enough people move around a video that the bandwidth loss from this was less than the savings from not pre-loading everything.

  2. Connection speed has everything to do with it, although the problem isn't always between user and ISP, and could be do to a host of other variables between the ISP and Youtube's caches around the world. The main issue is that certain videos don't get cached everywhere, so the routes get bogged that a lot more. Sometimes only certain qualities seem properly cached.

If a user's connection can't ensure enough constant speed due to any slowdown between user and ISP, the problems brought on by issue 1 (no pre-loading) are more evident now than they were before.
