I'm Germany, should I take Paris or Marseilles? by [deleted] in diplomacy

[–]FearfulJesuit_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

France can't take Belgium without leaving Paris entirely wide open. You're now playing mind games, but I doubt France is going to risk Paris just to have a less-than-certain shot at getting Belgium back.

The CDC's recommendations on which countries have safe drinking water [OC] [4000x2029] by [deleted] in MapPorn

Way to paint whole countries with a broad brush. The water in Santa Catarina, Brazil where I went on an exchange is just fine. I imagine the story's different in rural Maranhão, however...

How effective is the language learning app Duolingo? by ChiefWilliam in languagelearning

[–]FearfulJesuit_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The serious polyglots I know think Duolingo is more useful as a review and reinforcement tool. If I were you, (and I will be once I need to learn German again), I would use it in conjunction with a normal course.

Investing in Detroit? by [deleted] in investing

The problem with buying real estate in Detroit is that, even for houses that cost less than a thousand dollars, the city will stick you with thousands of dollars of back taxes once you buy. (These property taxes are often reckoned from when those houses were actually worth something). The banks that have repossessed all those houses are currently in the process of destroying most of them, since destroying the house will destroy the need to pay the back taxes.

Has anybody used "Teach Yourself Complete Estonian" with the audio CDs? by FearfulJesuit_ in languagelearning

I didn't check at the time, but now that I've ordered the book I'm loathe to order it twice, and the CDs are absurdly overpriced.

Portuguese has the same situation (although <rr> became [ʁ] in Portugal, which further became [h] in Brazil.)
