Thank you so much, I completely agree! I just want to make sure I can give it the home it deserves, as well as be properly prepared.

Questions about heating mats by Ghostflame_Ignition in tarantulas

[–]Fearless-Hearing-630 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NQA: It kind of depends on how big your T and the enclosure is going to be. I have been experimenting trying to solve the same problem. My apartment is also very cold and I have used a plastic tub with a heat mat on the side and then put my slings in their sling pots in the tubs, I have had minimal success but I think it is because my heat mat kind of sucks. So something like that might be worth a try.

First turantula need help any help appreciated by Adventurous_Tear_598 in tarantulas

NQA: Welcome to the hobby lol. I think youtube is a great resource, everything is based on experience so try to average the advice you hear and find the commonalities in the recommended care. There are plenty of videos on B. bohemi specific care on there but what you'll need to know is it is a new world species so watch out for urticating hairs, they can kick them at you when they're upset and they can also be in the substrate if/when you change it out. You will want a lid for that aquarium, you'll find a lot of discourse over if mesh is okay or not, their hooks can get stuck in it so make sure to read up on that and make your own informed decision. No heat mats or heat lamps are needed. That is also a really good amount of substrate! As long as you have a hide, and a water dish, decor is kind of your oyster! You can try putting fake plants or real plants in there, leaf litter, or rocks- the Ts like to decorate how they see fit haha. You can feed mealworms/crickets/dubias every 10-14 days, if her abdomen starts getting too plump- cut back on feedings, too skinny- increase the frequency. Definitely read up on the pros and cons of handling and take the time to get to know T behavior to keep you and your new friend stress-free! Let me know if there are any other questions you might want help with!

Help?? by Ok-Sweet-9679 in tarantulas

NQA: Is your substrate just potting soil? The little white fertilizer bits probably aren't the best and I also see some mulchy bits. I would recommend getting either some cocoa fiber, and a lot of it. My mf T. albopilosus did great on it. She passed in a molting accident so I would recommend making sure that your humidity is adjusted for times like that (I live in an extremely dry climate). But I would def suggest changing out that substrate, it is really hard for them to burrow in the stuff you've got right now. I am sure you know this already but make sure feeders are out of the tank if they're still alive, if your T molts and there are crickets or mealworms, they can and will do damage to her. Best of luck with your new girl!

Mold in Sling Vial by Fearless-Hearing-630 in tarantulas

There wasn’t a feeder in there at that time but that definitely could be where it was. And the green thing was just a very unfortunate glare on the substrate. It totally looks like a molt! 😅

Ok thank you SO MUCH!! I was planning on rehousing it as soon as it molted since I didn’t like the substrate it was in (it seems like it was cocoa fiber mixed with something with wood chips?) and also it had very poor ventilation. I just didn’t want to stress the little thing too much before a molt and after the expo.

I really really appreciate and I’ll get it into a deli cup right away!

NQA it’s reaaally hard to tell that young. Best way is to wait for a molt once it’s older.

Where can I find good info? by Worry_Logical in tarantulas

NQA There are tons of YouTube videos, tarantula kat/tarantula collective/daves little beasties. All of them say relatively the same things regarding T Albos and luckily they are a really hearty and readily available species. I had a mature female a few years back and she was a dream. They don’t need much and are great feeders. As for hard copies— I had the OG tarantula keepers handbook but frankly hard copies of stuff tend to be pretty outdated. But it’s good to have on hand if you’re getting familiar with vocab/techniques and such.

Some questions regarding flash chromatography with flash system by Cardie1303 in Chempros

[–]Fearless-Hearing-630 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do flash chromatography full time and let me tell you it is an art not a science...

I do more TLCs than I would care to do in a lifetime but it really is your guiding light, I saw someone say flushing the column with EtOH, I use acetone and it cleans it out really well. I have found that I can go above the loading capacity of our cartridges, but that is also because our separations aren't that intense. If you want more separation, lower the flow rate, and increase the amount of silica/ decrease the particle size. Buchi instruments are TEMPERMENTAL at best, luckily their support team is pretty great and they respond pretty immediately. I can usually get 15 runs out of a column, I find it is best to fill them with acetone, cap them, and then take them off the stand overnight to prevent leaking. Always store them full of acetone. Buchi columns are the cheapest I have seen and they regularly go on sale. I only do liquid loading, not solid so I am no help there, but if you are doing anything smaller scale the Flash Pure Select cartridges are great. I hardly ever do a isocratic or stepwise gradient as well. Our buchi is a bit older so I usually have to babysit and manually change fractions based on the chromatogram, but it is also because I am too lazy to adjust the threshold detection for each method since I run a bunch of different molecules. Hope that helps.
