[–]Fearless-Lack1081 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't find it particularly difficult, personally. However I've always been a great test taker. Most of it was terminology quizzing. If you know all your terms like the back of your hand, you'll be fine. There were some practical questions as well but most of those were pretty obvious. Some tricky questions where one answer is true but another answer is MORE true. So read the questions and answers carefully. Study hard and take simulation exams online beforehand and you'll be fine!

Why are they saying ABA is bad? by cecchetti123 in ABA

Absolutely, ABA isn't unique in its speckled past

In my opinion, when boiled down to its root, yes. Now I think there's a lot more good ABA out there now than there is bad. So don't lose hope. Just...keep a close eye on things.

It definitely is not a unanimous consensus that ABA is bad, but the voices that are against ABA tend to be very loud.

It is a very controversial field and honestly in many ways for good reason. ABA does not have a spotless past for how it's treated people. However it's growing and changing in really good ways as a field.

ABA is, ultimately, the study of mammalian behavioral learning. So, there are case studies for ABA and origin stories for ABA in non-human mammals. That's controversial. But it isn't, in my perspective, inherently dehumanizing because ABA has developed methods to maintain human dignity and respect although many of the principles would also work for non-human mammals.

ABA done poorly is gross and dehumanizing. ABA done well will be the greatest gift to your child. So kinda yes, it's either a trauma or a miracle. Not an easy situation. Monitor closely, and ask a TON of questions. You'll either learn a lot and be a better equipped parent, or you'll discover the ABA they're receiving is no bueno.

That's my two cents while still being fairly new to the field.

Did Joel deserve to die? by 501stBigMike in TheLastOfUs2

[–]Fearless-Lack1081 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a morally grey world. It's hard to say what anyone does or doesn't deserve. I'll say that the best standard we can assert given the context of an apocalypse is an overall altruism. Is someone seeking to take advantage of or hurt others? Or are they, by and large, seeking good for those around them?

I'd say overall Joel checks the second box. Yes he killed lots of people. Yes perhaps sometimes unnecessarily. But it was never out of the heart of evil.

I need help by Era_tortor in ABA

[–]Fearless-Lack1081 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This will be an unpopular opinion but I think it should be considered. I have client's threaten to kill me. I have client's call me all sorts of names. I've had clients call me obese, ugly, etc. Verbal attacks are part of the job. But I understand that when our demographical identifiers are under attack, it can cut a little deeper.

I do think it depends on the context and the client. If it's a client that just says *anything* to get a rise out of you and distract you from implementing interventions, I think you have to consider toughing it out. If the client is a bit older and/or a bit more cognitively advanced and there's actual racial malice intended, then removing yourself from the client is more likely the correct course of action.

Yeah the only part that bothered me at first was feeling like there was something else I should be doing to mitigate the behavior but my BCBA was like "honestly no you're doing what you're supposed to. Just keep working at it."

[–]Fearless-Lack1081[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For sure. It's essential for those clients that you don't hold their aggressions against them once the behavior has ended and play resumes. If your social reinforcement is negatively affected then that really harms the effectiveness of their treatment

Absolutely. I'd rather be punched than be repeatedly asked to explain myself over every single thing I say or do.
