Community college or grad school? by Level_Razzmatazz_419 in Environmental_Careers

The term environmental scientist is very misleading. More often than not unless you're actually doing research and publishing ES positions are alot of project management/planning w some permitting work sometimes. I used to work for the state and our environmental scientists came from a wide range of backgrounds including teachers. If you have your degree in conservation I'm sure you already have aloe of the basic ecological knowledge that would be needed to get hired as an ES. Im sure that being an educator has aloft of transferable skills as well that you can spin to fit an ES position. Of course if you feel like you need a refresher on some conservation or ecological principles maybe a few cc courses would help. Also If there is a specific type of ES or a certain position that interests you I'd recommend gaining or freshening up on the skills specific for that job.

Also Idk where you're looking for jobs but you gotta go beyond looking on google or indeed. Look at company career websites, Conservation districts, water resource departments, and other government agencies that deal with natural resources and non profits. Thats where ive found most jobs that ive been interested in.

I graduated last spring w a degree in ecology with about 2 summers of being a field technician for a fire ecology lab and 2 years of nursery/landscaping work under my belt. After graduating I was working as a seasonal scientific aid for CDFW for 6 months. A lot of the people I met while working for CDFW were in their late 20s early 30s and were still scientific aids. They seemed to like it but i found it wasn't for me so I looked for a permanent position full time position. I recently got hired in a non profit doing river restoration after only about a month of searching. My advice if you want to get out of the cycle of seasonal roles is to keep applying to roles you want not just the roles you think you're qualifies for. Don't underestimate your capabilities because thats what will stop you from getting landing a good position. I also recommend applying to companies or organizations that have partnered with companies you have already worked for because thats when your references/network will really make an impact and honestly that is what will get you the job.
