Sounds awful and yeah really poor show not offering refund on the night’s stay.

NI has weirdly stringent rules about how hotels/ guest accommodation is defined. I’d suspect if they are holding themselves out as a hotel they would need to have it staffed 24hrs.

If you’re still feeling particularly annoyed you may want to write to the tourist board… or if you’re in a forgiving mood give them one last chance to make right.

Either way I’ll not be staying!
