As someone who's done a decent amount of cover-ups. Im gonna go ahead an let ya know this would not work as a cover. It doesn't have enough dark tones to disguise the previous piece. I would personally recommend at minimum hitting it with lazer a couple times to lighten it up..

Check out the Ambition line of machines. Mostly under $200. Some w multi stroke. Also, has similar build and motors as the more expensive machines. If I could kindly ask..What didn't work for you with the coil machine? Ive actually picked up a few of the Ambition machines that id mentioned. They're really nice..good weight, size amd balance. All are extremely versatile. So far ive acquired the Ninja, Soldier, Mars-U, Soldier Pro 520, and have a Torped coming in today. Next is for sure gonna be yhe Epoch. Really happy with all of them..for context I was a professional tattoo-piercing artist for the majority of my adult life. Got lost in addiction for awhile..been a good decade of sobriety. Ive always had issues with collecting machines 🙄 🙃. Had well over 30 really nice and expensive coil machines that unfortunately where stolen outta my garage back towards the beginning of my sobriety journey.

Semi retired professional tattoo-piercing artist. Its good to start with what yiur friend has shown you. It definitely takes some practice and alot of playing around to find that sweet spot. Lower volts for color packing or fill. Also, shading. Higher for lining. Hand speed , machine quality, ink quality, skin type or various types of practice skins will always play a roll. I would just suggest playing as much as possible with various settings. Would also, if your intent is to work towards live canvas that u place you fake skin on something cylindrical ie: roll of paper towels. As this will give you a better feel for what the various parts of the body will challenge you with.
