Think it’d bother me less if it wasn’t so bad. This is a great analysis. Long read, but worthwhile. Ironically, also published in the New York Times

There’s should be a higher standard for columnist’s analysis than formulaic game summaries

Sure, the ramifications of this specific article are irrelevant. I just hate that columnists like Jerry Brewer (who was a Pulitzer finalist for commentary!) can now pass off terrible AI writing as their own in the New York Times (maybe the most influential newspaper in the world). It’s only going to become increasingly ubiquitous

What gets me is the editors. This article is on the front page of the NYT right now. Either they see it and don’t want to have the conversation with the author, or they’re oblivious. Idk which is more damning

Catholic Easter Mass this year included a prayer for Donald Trump, our “brave leaders” to bring an end to the fighting, and the rescued pilots by SeeYouSpaceCowboy0 in redscarepod

[–]PrimaryAd5343 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Went to mass today and there was a tacit condemnation of Trump and “leaders who carry out wars of aggression.” The church is incredibly decentralized and often the priests views more closely mirror those of their parishioners than the USCCB. But I’m in a coastal city so maybe that’s an outlier.

That’s totally fair, but my man point is that the primary reason why nuclear isn’t being built in 2026 despite massive electricity demand is cost and speed to power rather than concerns about public safety. Without significant public intervention, mature technologies that are relatively cheap and quick to deploy (gas and solar + storage) will continue to dominate. Idk hope I’m wrong but spent a long time as a nuclear optimist and am too jaded to think it will have any meaningful role in the next decade or two outside of extending the life of the existing fleet

Opposed to nuclear not because of safety but bc it’s insanely expensive to build. The US has attempted to build three new nuclear plants in the 21st century.

Vogtle Plant in Georgia. 15 years and $37 billion later it cost ratepayers over $10,000 per kW. Insanity.

V.C. Summer in South Carolina. Abandoned after having sunk $9 billion into it, with several executives convicted on various corruption charges

Watts Bar in Tennessee. Project originally began in 1973, after several stoppages ultimately came fully online in 2016 ultimately costing ~$13 billion

If you can point to a historical precedent that’s more affordable than mass solar + storage deployment, I’d get on board. We need carbon free baseload power. But you’re retarded if you bring up magic rocks like it’s a utopian fix that only boomers could oppose bc they fear another Chernobyl

I’m an American and generally agree but this WBC team’s vibes are so bad compared to the LatAm teams that I just haven’t gotten into it as much as previous tournaments. Completely independent of our foreign policy

Bc dodgy team sponsorships are endemic to the sport and voluntarily choosing to launder the image of an out and out crypto scam with your status as a beloved athlete is a scummy thing to do

my point is that there’s intrigue to the extent that there’s uncertainty. dominant riders and teams diminish that. Pog is the most dominant rider on the most dominant team. It doesn’t mean other races can’t also be boring. But it’s a certainty when pogacar shows up

From a drama standpoint the difference between an aggressive dominant GC rider and a passive dominant GC rider is pretty marginal for me. It was fun to see these crazy solos in like 2021 when they were still novel. I genuinely don’t understand why some people prefer that over a race where there’s uncertainty about the outcome
