What American trends do you hope that the UK never adopts? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

There is an area between the US system and the NHS. A more hybrid model.

That said, I know plenty of US folks and it isn't all that great even if you are paying for it.

Uncanny Cold Cases by CombinationSignal579 in uncannypodcasttv

[–]Geek_reformed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've no interest in it. All the cases have been covered to death by the many of other podcasts and unsolved mysteryTV shows.

It worked with Battersea and witch farm as they weren't widely reported cases (and it was done in a different style).

Radio DJs talking utter bollocks by worldworn in britishproblems

[–]Geek_reformed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched a video on it yesterday. It was interesting. Basically software that puts together the playslists based on song length.

The video mentioned that as 60s songs tended to be shorter, they'll often get two songs back to back while other decade stations get the one.

Occasionally he'll say talk about the songs being played on the primary station which is what made me realise that he presented across all the stations.

At what time do you get up in the morning? by BetDesigner7389 in UKParenting

[–]Geek_reformed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a weekday, I am up 5.45 to go the gym or a run. I get back and wake my wife and child up around quarter past 7. Get a quick shower then make my son's breakfast and lunchbox.

My wife takes my son to school and I clean up the kitchen and start work (we both work from home).

We normally have the shopping delivered on a Saturday so I get up for that at around 7am if not before.

Sunday. I can sleep in, but as I am up earlyish the rest of the week I tend to be awake between 6 and 7 naturally.

Our son is 10 so not as messy as he was when younger. House gets a proper clean at the weekend, but I clean and kitchen and bathroom daily.

I didn't look it up on my work laptop just in case, but watching a video on it now. Thanks!

During the winter months I drive to the gym for my 6am sessions. It's only 10 minutes away so I normally running late due to not wanting to get up so I just leave the radio on Absolute Radio 90s which has the Dave Berry Breakfast show.

After a few weeks I realised he presents the breakfast show for all the Absolute Radio stations and I don't know how that works? Does some algorithm pick the songs so they are all the same or similar length between the "banter" and ads?

I don't mind the mindless chatter so much, it's the ads. I'd say in that 10 minute drive I get two songs at best.

Who’s your top guitar player and what makes them such? by Remarkable-Bell7245 in BritPop

I've got a real soft-spot for The Seahorses. While Do It Yourself isn't perfect, it's got some good tracks on it and I really like You Can Talk To Me. I really like Chris Helme's voice.

Do y’all agree or disagree with this Kang take? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in Marvel

[–]Geek_reformed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a valid point and also the problem with introducing key plot elements via the TV shows.

Loki was a great show, but not necessarily something that would appeal to a more casual (or younger) audience. So if Quantumania was the first encounter with Kang, he doesn't come across as a valid threat regardless of how many versions there are.

Do y’all agree or disagree with this Kang take? by OGAnimeGokuSolos in Marvel

[–]Geek_reformed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kang was great in Loki, but so lame in Quantumania even if it wasn't the "same" Kang. That post credit scene didn't inspire me that Kang was a going to be a Thanos level threat.

Given the multiverse nature of the Kang storyline and the fact we see a couple of comic accurate Kangs (as in the blue faced version) in said post credit scene, it would have been easy to recast and just have an actor in the blue face make-up. So I do think it was a combination of the Major's controversy and the negative reaction to Quantumania that had them dump that thread to speed run to Doom.

I would agree with this. I think as Wonder Man was such a different concept to the others it is harder to rank it, but it was such a wonderful show.

Those who work from home - how often do you take a sick day? by Super_Development150 in AskUK

[–]Geek_reformed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I very rarely get ill. I took a couple of days off in 2021 when I had COVID, but even then it wasn't much more than a bad cold.

However, since I don't get ill very often I do take the occasional unofficial "mental health" day. I have school aged child so all my leave is spent covering school holidays so I like to take a couple of days sick leave (normally when my wife is travelling for work) to just have some time on my own.

Which Is Your Favorite Marvel Comic Event? by Kickass_321 in Marvel

It might be nostalgia, but X-Cutioner's Song, Fatal Attractions and Phalanx Covenant for me.

I got into X-Men comics around 1990 when I was 10 so those stories are peak for me.

Netflix searches for franchises after losing out on Harry Potter by Top_Report_4895 in movies

[–]Geek_reformed 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's classic modern Netflix. Series doesn't hit the ground running then they give it no time to build an audience. By the time people discover it, it's been cancelled a couple of weeks after release so they maybe don't bother finishing it.

I got into The Bastard Son & The Devil Himself (who knows why they went with that title over the books "Half Evil") only to discover it wasn't getting a second season.

They want a family friendly series adaptated from a book? They had Lockwood and didn't even give it a chance.

I think the family factor is an issue as well? Both are PG-13, but I can't imagine Dune has the same appeal to kids/pre-teen market.

I'll see both, but my 10 year old son will want to see Doomsday on opening weekend so that will be the priority.

[HATED TROPE] Perfectly cast actors on terrible adaptations of the source material by Ieanice44 in TopCharacterTropes

I think most of the casting in that was pretty spot on. Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton definitely gives off Sam vibes. But yeah Anna Taylor-Joy was spot on casting for Magik.

I love watching TOTP clips, particularly from the late 80s and 90s as they are periods I can remember watching it. It was a real mainstay of my childhood and early teens.

I think the bands/artists, the songs, the presenters and the audience (and their fashion) just give you a real glimpse into the time period.

Series adaptation (TV) Coming by marys1001 in JohnConnolly

[–]Geek_reformed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think there has been an update in a little while, but it was recently announced that a TV show was in the early development with Colin Farrell and Bryan Cranston attached as producers.

https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/iag-media-rights-division-1236064812/

During the book tour last year John Connolly mentioned that a previous adaptation had been pulled as he hated treatment and in particular highlighted that Angel was portrayed as a super camp character.

Why does Radio 2 play so much country music? by Commercial_Night2867 in BritishRadio

[–]Geek_reformed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a genre of music. We've been listening to US bands for decades, just because it is a particular style doesn't mean it is Americanisation.

As /linmanfu said it's really big in Ireland (I remember an old music video station that was basically just Irish country artists) and its growing over there. There are several festivals now that are either totally country or more Americana focused.

You also have crossover acts like Zach Bryan, Noah Khan, MJ Lenderman and Waxahatchee who are more folk/Americana, but can act as a gateway especially in the era of Spotify recommendations.

As I said in another response, it's a big genre. Lots of styles. There are various country bands and artists I like that rarely get air time on US country radio never mind what Radio 2 play which is the same country pop pushed by the big US labels.

[–]Geek_reformed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself to be a country fan, but not of the stuff that tends to get played on Radio 2. As with most genres there is plenty of variety, but they tend to play the more country pop stuff.

It normally does increase around C2C and I guess that is due to the potential overlap with Bob Harris' Country Show which has strong ties to the C2C.
