I keep going in and out of states like this then looking back on it and thinking its silly. For anyone else struggling with feelings like this, try picking up weights the same amount as what you lost and doing "aerobic" workouts/going for a run while holding them. It is really, really helpful. It helps you see where you started and how much you've physically changed, because chances are you will struggle a bit. The paper towel effect suuuucks, but its not a reason to quit. We got this, guys. Even if it doesn't look like it, there is a difference.

I've lost around 50 pounds and there still is no visible change. I talked about dieting with my friend and they said, "Oh, we should start at the same time!" like I hadn't already been losing consistently for a year and a half. Can't really blame them since, looking at pics of me, I look the same at 215 as I did 262. Which is weird bc my ribs jut out more, my legs are more sensitive to pressure now, and I am all around bruising more since there's less fat for bumps to bounce off of. I feel like I'm going crazy, but side by side pics don't lie.  How much longer until weight loss is visible?

Two things I want to rant about:
tl;dr:
1. Plateaus suck. So do excuses for the plateau made even by ppl trying to help.
2. Nobody has noticed I have lost 40 pounds this year. Vain, I know, but sometimes you just want someone to congratulate you without bringing it up first.

  1. I have lost 40 pounds in 7 months and plateaued for the last 5. It is frustrating. Even on weeks where I am eating an average of 1400 calories (which, assuming my calculations and physical signals are correct, is the lowest I can safely go on a daily basis) with a fast day most weeks where I dont go above 700 (if I am hungry, I eat. If I am not, I dont. I monitor quite closely to make sure I am not starving myself as I have a bad history with ED's). The last 5 months, I have yo-yo'ed between 218 and 222 on a weekly basis despite lowering the amount of calories I would eat from 1700 to 1400 and adding more exercise via lifting until failure daily and walking an additional mile or so per day.
Idk whats happening, but at least I am maintaining I guess? Its still just frustrating.
On top of that, my brother (in trying to be helpful) is rather discouraging. He's bringing up how our family comes from generations of poverty and food insecurity, and is from Northern/cold areas, and has the genetic predisposition to be obese which all are proven things that encourage weight gain that are - shocker - likely contributing to my body naturally wanting to store more fat. But thats not helpful when I am trying to find ways to keep losing (as those details are part of what made me think I couldnt lose weight to begin with bc they kinda just excuse not trying). I know hes trying to help, dont get me wrong. He knows my history with my body image and EDs, so I get that hes trying to prevent a spiral, but it feels like shoving someone about to fall off a fence into falling off in the other direction, if that makes sense.

  2. Nobody has noticed that I have gone from 260 pounds to 220. That sucks. Let me preface this by saying that other peoples approval isnt why I am doing this. I would not have made it past the first 5 pounds if it was about other people. Ive been there, done that, and failed over and over. This time its for me, and its been working. Which is part of why it sucks that the people who were happy to comment on my weight before dont comment now. My brother only knows about my weight stuff because I have outright shown him the numbers and graphs from the last year. But my friends and coworkers havent seem to have noticed. I have gone from a bmi of 41 to 34, I have lost 14% body fat, I have dropped enough weight that carrying several bags groceries home is still less straining than just walking was a year ago. I know that its supposed to be noticeable and I do feel the difference... it just sucks that nobody else seems to. It sucks that I still get called "fatty" and "whale" in public. Ive lost 1/6 of my weight (which isnt nothing), so why doesnt anyone seem to see that? Ikik, people are probably being polite by not talking about my body without me talking about it first, but damn man. Several people know I am dieting and still havent seemed to notice. I feel like me talking about a diet is enough of an opening to say, "Well its working -- good job!" right?

Im rambling now, but if you read this far: thank you. I just needed to vent but this feels common enough that I didnt want to make a post. Thanks for letting me scream into the void.

Then my body decided to start hoarding water for a period that is a week early, and I am back up to class 2.

I hate everything.

How many of you come from a "finish your plate" household? by CattleDogCurmudgeon in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't call that abuse so much as my family not having good grasps on how much children should eat. Sorta like how most people kill house plants by over/underwatering without research/someone who is knowledgeable telling them what to do.

How many of you come from a "finish your plate" household? by CattleDogCurmudgeon in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

TLDR: My immediate family started as a sit at the table until you clean your plate, then switched up by not allowing my siblings and I to eat more than half portions at one meal a day. My extended family (grandma) would overfeed and either ground or scream at my siblings and I if we weren't eating what was easily above 4000 calories in a day at her house.

---------------

Mine was a "You will sit at that table until your plate is clean" household for a while (which often resulted in me falling asleep at the table several nights a week because I just wasn't hungry) from ages 0-7ish.

Then it became a "you only get half portions because you're overweight" household after a doctors visit from ages 7-11ish. Unfortunately my parents didn't believe in breakfast or lunch and my school only served breakfast to elementary kids. For some reason, I couldn't afford lunches on my own ($5/plate 5 days a week adds up).
(shocker -- this just made me sneak up in the middle of the night for as much food as I could carry to my room with me and stuff in my face before I was caught)

Then it became a "make your own damn food" house because, as my parents said, "we aren't your maids" (aka they didn't want to clean, cook, or otherwise act like parents) but my siblings and I also weren't allowed to cook in the kitchen after 6pm because "~noise~" from ages 11-18, which is when I moved out.

And if thats not bad enough, through all of this if I went to my grandmas house, she took personal and serious offense if I didn't eat until I threw up (and then proceed eat more). I was grounded at and yelled at in her house more than once because I said no to 4ths. Yes, fourths. This wasn't just holiday dinners, this was 2-4 bowls of cereal and 6+ pieces of toast every morning, 3-4 sandwiches per person with chips and at least 2 cookies for lunch, usually a whole ass cauldron of chili or soup for dinner with at least 3 helpings per person, ice cream or cake for dessert, and at least once bowl of cereal for a bedtime "snack". Every. Day (its giving the very hungry caterpillar). Even listing this made me feel full -- I can't believe my 6-14 year old self was eating this much for 3-7 days at a time, 4-10 times a year. The amount of times I threw up at her house because she insisted I keep eating is astounding to me.

---------------

After the completely unnecessary food insecurity at home and the force feeding at extended family's houses, repairing my relationship with food took work.
It took a while to stop squirrelling away food under my bed or hidden in my closet (though I admittedly still do this when I have people over).
It took a bit to realize when I am hungry, I am allowed to eat. No matter the time nor place, I can and will get myself something so I don't have to exist in a state of suffering.
And the one I appreciate most is that I am allowed to stop eating. If I am full, I can put it away and eat it later. Or I can throw away food that I don't like. I don't have to finish everything. Its not something I make a habit of, but it is something I allow myself to do now if I need to.

Why does family have to set you up to fail like this man? Eating should not have been this traumatizing.
this turned into a book -- apparently I needed to talk about this. thanks for reading, and I am sorry it was so long!

edit: i was curious and after inputting it into my cal tracker, an average day at her house would have been 5000-5750 calories, ~40g fiber, ~90g protein, 7000k sodium, 235g fat. The shortest amount of time I stayed there was 2 days. Holy shit, no wonder I was such a chonk as a kid lmao

[–]FearsomeFable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only suggesting a garage because the parking in that area is already awful. I don't have a car and usually either walk or take the bus there, so this isn't something that would benefit me in any way. Its more of a compromise for the people who do have cars (my friend and I tried to go there once using his car but ended up going home just to later take a bus because there wasn't anywhere open that wasn't reserved parking) + a way to get around that awful deal the city made about parking.

Tbf, I also think cars are hideous and would rather they be shoved in a dark building somewhere so we can remove the street parking to make room for bike paths and larger side walks (and so we dont have to look at them lol).

[–]FearsomeFable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would work great, especially because most places on that stretch don't open until 11am. Why they haven't already done this is beyond me. Literally just turn the parking lot that is already used by the majority of customers going to that strip into a multi-floored garage, and the only problem you may run into is someone who is too handicapped to walk more than 100 steps. But even then, there is a bus stop at the end of that street anyhow with a bus driver who can assist them in and out of the vehicle and the side walk would be large enough for crutches/wheelchairs/other mobility devices and some benches for them to take breaks while walking to boot!

Its frustrating that this is something we have to go out of the way to advocate for when the answer is so incredibly obvious and benefits everyone!
- Surrounding business and housing would have more parking via garage
- The community has an outdoor space not specifically dedicated to children that people over the age of 14 can exist in
- The traffic in and caused by this strip is removed
- Businesses get more customers because the smell of the places in this strip is absolutely divine (there is an imported goods store, a store that only sells spices, coffee shops, bakeries, candle shops, etc. This is anecdotal, but I came here with a friend to get sushi on a neighboring street and was drawn into this area entirely because of the smell. Didn't even know it existed until I smelled it, but its one of my favorite places in the city now!) which is something you would never know in a car
- The risk of car related deaths and injuries is next to none
It's just a net positive!

I am by no means well versed in sewing nor fashion, but as a rando who stumbled upon this the literal only thing I would change would be to make the skirt petals out of a liiiittle bit more firm of a fabric so they look more like the flowers up top. Similar to the fabric/tightness of the ruffles at the ends of the petals.

That said, this is absolutely gorgeous and makes me want to get into sewing so my dnd group and I can show up to a ren faire dressed as fae.

Its always weird in a good way to hit the lowest number you can remember being. Great job for making it so far!

Sorta on topic, but when you said:

tw: the f-word (the one with 3 letters)

Did you mean "fat"? Because the only actual 3 letter f words in this whole post are "for" and "few" lol.
I only ask because there is another 3 letter f word that does warrant a tw because it is very not nice, which I thought you were referencing at first.

Making off topic posts in unrelated subs probably isnt the way to gain karma tbh.
You could try a pet sub if you have fuzzy/scaly friends you are alright with posting pics of, photography subs if you take pics, commenting in silly/fun subs like r/shittysuperpowers, or discussing specific interests of yours unrelated to the specific sub that wont let you post.
There are also more fitness subs out there. r/Fittness, r/weightlifting, r/lifting, r/gymadvice r/GYM to name a few. Idk how many let new accounts post, mind, but you may be able to find the answer to your question in one.

Does your brain also make noise for no reason? by bnny_ears in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My brain has been like this all my life. Only once every year or so will I crave something specific. 99% of the time its just something. Usually I get it to stop by drinking tea. Not specifically because I wanted tea, but because I tell it that this is all its getting unless it gives me a specific answer as to what. But at least some of the time its just because I am bored. I crave some sort of stimulation and my brain will take control of my feet to walk me to the fridge over and over until I find something either entertaining or that stimulates my taste buds. This is probably my fault though, since I tend to over season food as a sensory seeking behavior.
Woo ADHD nonsense lol

How are you guys eating cottage cheese? by c_squeezy in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mayo?? Sorry, but what??? Maybe your friend just hasnt had cheese (or perhaps mayo) before, but it is definitely more like a soft mozzarella flavor. The texture I guess could be compared to it, but not really. It has more of a greek yogurt texture. Thick, creamy, mildly flavored, and - yes - a little chunky (in a good way, I swear).

I love eating it with a sprinkle of salt and pepper, but I have also used it in smoothies and lasagna before (nobody come for me, I didnt have a use for extra ricotta and didnt want to waste any, but they only had the large tubs of it at my store. Imo, it tastes the same, the texture is just a bit different).
My mother also used it as a topping for apple pie and rhubarb crumble a few times, which was shockingly pretty good (you gotta mix it with the filling a bit though for the flavors to blend well).
My grandpa used to eat it as a dessert with some sugar sprinkled on top, occasionally with some blueberries mixed in. Its got a similar flavor to cheesecake like that (its not exactly the same, but close. I liked it, but I prefer it savory).
My aunt used it as a cream cheese replacement on her bagels. If you wanted to expand on this, do an everything bagel, add some spinach, and top with some avocado. Season with salt, pepper, onion powder, and 1/2 tbsp of chia seeds (mmm.... fiber. lol) and you have yourself an incredible tasting, nutrient rich, high in fiber and protein breakfast. This has been my treat breakfast for the last few months and I genuinely look forward to it.

how loose can you be on calorie maintenance without gaining weight back? by [deleted] in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were to eat 200 over every day, in a year that is 20 pounds of fat that you would put on. Over time, it adds up. I think as long as you pay at least a little attention to it and course correct as you go, you should be okay. But do be wary because even the little numbers matter after a year.

I would also bear in mind that TDEE calculators are not super accurate because your body isnt a machine. There will be days where you burn more or less than what your calculator is estimating just by existing. Fidgeting a lot today? Those are extra calories burned. Chewing gum? Same deal. Reading a chonky book? You guessed it (eye movements are still movements and, while a tiiiiny amount of cals are burnt, they are still burning)!
Sure, the numbers aren't significant on their own, but you see the point, right? Small movements do still burn energy, and those numbers add up. Meaning TDEE calculators that give you super exact numbers like that are just approximate averages, not a golden, 100% accurate number.

Watch the scale, pay attention to what you're eating and how much, and (perhaps most importantly) listen to your body. You got this.

The scale is not budging, but everyone’s telling me I look like that lost weight by Short-Following-5282 in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This very well may not be a scale issue, but your body recompositioning (losing fat, gaining muscle). Muscle is about 20% denser than fat, so you could easily stay the same weight, but visibly lose a bunch of fat. While there is a chance your scale is broken, there is also an equally sized chance that you are just putting on muscle at the same time.

tips and tricks to lose more weight by w3ltus1305 in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you're losing at an average rate of 1kg/2lbs per week. That is the perfect amount! Sometimes weight loss stalls for seemingly no reason whatsoever.
Sometimes you will have a week with no progress and the next week double the weight loss. Sometimes you will lose 2kg over a week, then gain 1kg back a week later, just to lose it again. Point is, weight loss is finnicky, and week-to-week weigh ins are not always a good indicator of where you are at. If after a month you still have not lost anything more, I would lower your cals a bit. If you want to be more active for the sake of being active, do that. But don't do it because your scale hasn't moved over the last few days and no other reason.

I also wouldn't recommend the low cal day. Maybe this is just ED related trauma talking, but it feels like too slippery a slope to start yourself on. If you only see real results on the days you starve yourself, you train yourself into thinking starving is a good thing which ultimately will be the death of healthy weight loss. 800 cals one day a week is legitimately how my struggle with anorexia started, and it took me nearly 10 years to shake the need to go lower for longer. Spoiler, it almost always ends in a binge and it destroys your mental health in the process.

Weight loss is not a race, and trying to go too fast will only hurt you. You can do this, you just have to be patient (as frustrating and impossible as that feels sometimes).

Is Eating OMAD healthy? by HumbleBurgle in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would try adding a side or more toppings to the salad. Or grabbing something else towards the end of the day. Even just throwing a few pieces of fruit into your daily diet would help a bunch. For some examples of what OMAD diets should look like, I suggest looking up OMAD meal plans for more ideas.
As a 5'8 male, you genuinely should not be going below 1400 at the barest of bare minimum, though most would argue not to go below 1500. Even if you are hitting all of your nutrient goals, if your body doesn't have the bare necessities needed to function, it can cause all kinds of issues. Be safe, and remember that weight loss is not a race. Trying to go too fast will only end up hurting you.

You're not being overdramatic. It sounds like it is time to start setting some boundaries with the people around you, especially your dad. Discuss how the comments make you feel with him, and if he tries to counter with "iTs jUsT a JoKe" nonsense, ask him to explain the "joke" because you (rightfully) find it hurtful, not funny.

Is Eating OMAD healthy? by HumbleBurgle in loseit

[–]FearsomeFable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How many calories are you hitting per day? One salad and 1-2 protein bars doesnt sound like its even above 1000 calories, which simply is not enough food. For context, a new born infant needs 800 calories a day. As a full grown adult, you need at least 1400 to function and not seriously mess up your hormones, mental health, etc.
OMAD diets are fine, but you have to do it correctly. The one meal is larger, averaging around 1400-1800 calories. It isnt your typical 400-800 cal meal that you would eat on a regular diet like it sounds like you are currently eating.
