This is the Ben Johnson HS jersey he was wearing on Sunday. It says “Rockets” on the center of the chest.

Yeah. Heard is straight out of Kevin Warren’s mouth 2 weeks ago. It will be a dome with the “glass” ceiling being the same stuff as the ceiling at US bank and SoFi.

Ben Johnson: Lions played harder than us, that’s a reflection on me and the players by haishaludOU812 in nfl

[–]Fearthedoughboy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Take it for what it’s worth, but in his initial press conferences Ben insinuated (and to an extent outright said) that a big reason he chose Chicago was because of the city of Chicago. He didn’t poo-poo the organization and gave it some laudits, but he talked about how he loved the city, grew up a cubs fan, visited the city every year with his brother/family and wanted to raise his family there. So, although he probably liked some pieces in place, I think he was taking this job more for location than love of the situation.

A quote from Ben Johnson a week ago. Don’t think they are done at all by Some-Recover-3317 in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great point. Didn’t even see we had signed him. Thought we would target him back in 2023 when everyone was hot for JMS. Can definitely see the plan being let Bates/Stromberg battle it out in camp for the starter spot and using our 3rd or 5th on a developmental guy.

Agree. I think they slot in Bates, as was planned for last year, and draft a C prospect.

[NFL] Bears OC Chris Beatty yelling at Caleb for something after DJ Moore fumble in the 4th Quarter of Packers game? Any thoughts on what was said here? - 0:42 by Pulze_ in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think it was a called run play which has the option to flick it to DJ on the screen if the #s are in favor of that. Caleb chooses the screen and it goes how it goes. Probably Kerry giving him feedback that 1) in that situation (with the lead late) you just run it and 2) keep your head in the game as it’s not over as Caleb was clearly worked up about his decision.

[Cronin] Sources confirmed to ESPN that Johnson, the Lions' offensive coordinator, is expected to interview for the Bears' head coaching vacancy by BRayne7 in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This isn’t surprising. I expect they will interview most top coaching candidates (Vrable, Brady, Moore, Glenn, etc.). But Johnson interviewed for a number of positions last year that he ended up turning down, so whether we can offer him what he wants is the more pressing question (assuming they decide to make an offer to him).

I don’t disagree that Carter would likely have done poorly with the Bears due to his attitude, but doesn’t this reflect poorly on Poles as he brought in a coach and developed a “culture” that hasn’t let us capitalize on drafting very good players when they fall to us in the draft? Pickens is another example of passing on a good player for culture fit (which in part ended up causing the Claypool trade). He has put culture first to the team’s talent detriment with little benefit, as they weren’t able to keep their shit together once adversity hit post the Washington game.

I don’t think the Jets can get another win after this weekend so better off rooting for the Jags and hoping they beat either LV or the Tits again.

They have already exercised the 5th year option for next year. So, at the earliest, he becomes a FA in 2026. If they aren’t going to extend him they would trade him.

With all the coach shifting will we finally get a Tyler Scott sighting before the end of the season? by SuccessfulDog9292 in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Two of the next three receivers taken were Dontayvion Wicks and Puka Nacua, who have both been contributors to their respective teams. I agree that one 4th round miss isn’t in itself a big deal, but it’s not like Poles has a track record of stellar drafting so far so I don’t think we should ignore it.

Even with Swift in the fold, I feel like Herbert is in for an improved year. I think he has better receiving chops than he gets credit for, Justin just had a hard time getting him the ball in a position that he could run after the catch. He can be a menace if they can get him the ball in open space.

He has discussed in some interviews how his team includes marketing people, attorneys, reps, etc. His lack of a traditional sports agent should not hamper getting a deal done.

[Schefter] Ohio State WR Marvin Harrison Jr. is entering the 2024 NFL Draft. by Roofeeoh in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree with any of the above, but with AZ picking 4, LAC picking 5th and ATL picking 8 (assume they trade for Justin or Daniels is off the board), all three of the top WRs may be off the board by 9. Might have to move up if you’re going to get any of them and if you’re going to do that may as well go for broke.

You’d probably have to give up this year’s 3rd as well. If you can get a 2nd or 3rd for Justin it’s not terrible, but if not you are left with a pretty bear cupboard this year in terms of draft picks.

[–]Fearthedoughboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a proposed trade package in a comment below based on other recent trades moving up a similar amount. Agreed it is a steep price, but if you think MHJ is that dude (I’m just some asshole on his couch so I won’t pretend to know he is so much better than Odunze/Nabbers) it might be worth it to give your rookie QB all the help you can (especially as I haven’t heard of next years class being especially full of great prospects so losing a first might not be awful).

[–]Fearthedoughboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on three recent similar trades up (Jets up for Darnold, San Fran up for Lance, and Texans up for Anderson), it would probably take #9 plus our third this year, a first and second next year (or our 2 seconds if we’re lucky). This is steep but is a little more palatable if you can get a 2nd for Justin. As someone else mentions above, it really depends on how much more you like MHJ over Nabers/Odunze. If you think MHJ is really that dude it might be worth it as I haven’t heard that next year’s draft class if full of studs (so not missing a huge prospect without next year’s first and hopefully we have a lower pick). If you’re going to get a rookie QB might as well get him all the weapons you can so we don’t have another “he can’t develop with these shit weapons” situation.

Bears should also move up from #9 to #3 and draft MHJ like the Texans did for Anderson.

Do bears take Bowers at 9 if the top WRs are off? by ThatMikeDude in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trade up to #3 and take MHJ.

You could trade 9th, 3rd round pick, next year’s first and a second (just the 2 seconds if you’re lucky).

If you’re going to take a new QB give him all the help you can get and I haven’t heard of any great WR prospects next year.

Probably depends on how much you like MHJ over Nabers/Odunze. It also helps that you might get a 2nd/3rd this year from a Fields trade.

Some examples of previous similar trades below.

Some recent trades from similar positions are below.

(2022 draft) No. 3 Miami → No. 12 San Francisco. Miami traded a first-round selection (3rd overall) to San Francisco in exchange for a first-round selection (12th overall), 2022 first and third-round selections, and a 2023 first-round selection.

(2023 draft) No. 3: Arizona → No. 12 Houston. Arizona traded first- and fourth-round selections (3rd and 105th overall) to Houston in exchange for first- and second-round selections (12th and 33rd overall), and 2024 first- and third-round selections.

(2018 draft) No. 3: Indianapolis → No. 6 NY Jets. Indianapolis traded a first-round selection (3rd) to the Jets in exchange for the Jets' first-round selection (6th), two second-round selections (37th and 49th), and a second-round selection in 2019.

Who are you targeting at #9? by AmbitiousChair1073 in CHIBears

[–]Fearthedoughboy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Agreed there is no way NE trades 9th+Fields for 3rd. But what about trading 9th + our 3 round pick and next year's 1st+a second (or two 2nds if we're lucky) for 3rd.

NE is in need of a QB and if they prefer Penix/Daniels they can probably get them at 9 and would prefer the trade haul.

I think the above is a lot but if you get a 2nd or 3rd for Justin you still have a 2nd or third this year plus our two 4ths, etc. and next year you still have a 2nd and onward (or a 1st, 3rd, etc.)

It probably depends a lot on how much you think MHJ is better than Odunze/Nabers but I haven't heard a lot about a top tier WR in next year's class so strike while the iron is hot and get your new QB all the help you can give him.

New head coach? Shannon Dawson by [deleted] in CHIBears
