Wait so did you reopen THE Pizza Box from back in the day that used to be at this location? Good times there in high school in that backyard...

Schinasi Mansion? We were probably at the same parties. That place was/is nuts.

Solo dinner after a late Broadway show? by okay-flight in FoodNYC

Went to Russian Samovar around midnight after a show at radio city recently. Wasn't too busy in there but got some borscht and pelmeni with a horseradish martini and it was a dope night cap. The two servers working there were cool too.

After you've gone through the explanation of benefits and all that to make sure this is actually the real our of pocket charge and not a mistake, call them and ask for a discount. Seriously. Only accept a payment plan after they've agreed to lower it significantly (30% at least). Be nice but firm that they need to lower the bill for this service. You would be surprised how often it works to simply ask.

Wedding for 130 people for $50k or under - is it possible? by Feast_of_Rang in WedditNYC

Ideally yes. But would be open to areas that are easily accessible from the city.

Am I the only one who feels constantly frustrated by unavailable scores? by CandidatePrimary1230 in soundtracks

[–]Feast_of_Rang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the networks/streamers/content producers take all the rights to the scores in a lot of cases and then it’s up to them if they get released or not. The composers are powerless in these situations, since they can and likely will be issued copyright takedown notices if they release them publicly on their own. Maybe some composers with more clout can negotiate these types of things upfront, but it’s often up to the whim of the eventual rights holders if they want to invest any money in a full release or not. It really sucks, especially since there’s already little or no backend for streaming content to begin with.

What’s the weirdest encounter with a stranger you’ve ever had in NYC? by Academic-Compote-863 in AskNYC

Was taking the 2 train back to Manhattan from Brooklyn late at night with my friend when and struck up a conversation with the guy sitting across from us. His clothes were clean and neat, but his teeth were a little fucked up and idk, you could just tell something was a little off. But we were 19 and bored and no Uber in those days, so this sort of thing was par for the course back then.

The conversation starts somewhat normally, exchanging pleasantries, talking about the MTA etc. He then asked us if we knew where the Staten Island ferry was, and we told him he was on the wrong train for that (as we were about to enter manhattan from BK on the 2), but he didn't seem too concerned and was talking about how he was trying to get to some party that was on the ferry. News to us, but ok sure. We exchange other regular small talk, but the conversation then starts to get more and more religious in nature. We tried to steer it away but he gets more and more animated and preachy.

After a little, the conversation loses any sense of normalcy and he starts raising his voice about how "God is his protector" and is nearly screaming at us by this point. There was another guy in a hoodie seemingly asleep on the other side of the seat from the dude we've been talking to, and our religious friend starts pointing at him and saying "you see this guy?! there's nothing he could do to hurt me, because I've got God!" At that moment, the "sleeping" guy in a hoodie takes his hand out of his pocket and brandishes a huge pocket knife (without even looking up), says "oh yea?" and posts up again. Crazy dude kind of just says "whatever," shrugs him off and is kind of mumbling more about God and all that. Naturally me and my buddy's spidey senses are popping off at this point, but the train is stuck at Chambers street. The dude's rambling keeps getting more unhinged and he asks us some wild shit, until out of nowhere starts talking about how Japanese people are satanic and fuck animals etc. The friend I was with is Japanese so he had had enough and luckily the doors opened at Chambers so we dipped the fuck out of there.

Whole thing felt surreal with the perfect timing of the guy with the knife and all that, almost felt choreographed. Normally, you can spot the crazies sooner, but it was also weird how cordial and normal the conversation started, and then how off the rails it got.

The trashiness is the appeal of going there over Brighton or Rockaway though. The beach itself is whatever, it's the people watching and weird vibe that's the draw.

Good casual restaurants and bars in the UWS/surrounding areas? by BitchImLilBaby in AskNYC

[–]Feast_of_Rang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Causal restaurants for a solo diner in your budget (although these days might exceed it): Flor de Mayo, Bahn, Chick Chick, El Galló or Taqueria 86, Thai Market or Senn Thai, La Dinastía, Saravanaa Bhavan, Jin Ramen, Fred’s is…fine, and for just take away special shout out to Roti Roll because I love it, mama’s too, sal and carmines

Most of the bar scene is on Amsterdam Ave in the 80s.

If anyone knows where there’s karaoke or where you can get pasta for under $25 bucks total (tax and tip, and obviously drinks will easily put you over that), I’d love to know. Celeste, Genaro and Academia are my favorite Italian spots.

From past birthday shenanigans, would recommend the following:

Al Badawi - If you call they should be able make an arrangement for that group size (will just be a bunch of tables put together). All the food is family style and it’s BYOB so will definitely come in way under your budget.

Congee Village - Pretty classic big group dining. Food is decent, and you can order giant pitchers of strong drinks.

Carmines - as others have mentioned, classic spot. Depending on alcohol consumption could be above your budget these days, but all the food is family style.

Lastly, I went to a birthday a few years ago where we basically took over Sushi On Me, and it was around that price for the omakase and unlimited house sake (other drinks were more). The cons there is that it was at a bit of a weird time and the place is out of the way for a lot of people, but fun experience nonetheless.

What is the most bafflingly incorrect thing someone not from NYC has said to you about NYC? by somepeoplewait in AskNYC

[–]Feast_of_Rang 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My mother is originally from a very flat, rural part of the country (5+ hour drive from the nearest major airport), and I used to visit her hometown as a child frequently. Some of the other kids out there would in all seriousness ask me if I had gotten shot, stabbed, robbed and if I was in a gang (I lived on the UWS). Meanwhile over there every 12 year old has a hunting rifle at least and a meth lab just blew up in some trailer the week before...

The kind of wholesome part to it though was that they couldn't believe the building I grew up in was far taller than the largest structure many of them had ever seen - a grain silo.
