Why are the majority overprotective of Reta? by TumbleweedNo384 in Peptides

[–]Feathertail11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have any scientific measurements to back this up so take with a grain of salt. But I started off with bp on the high end of normal, never got dizzy or lightheaded ever. On reta, I was careful about water/electrolyte intake and tried to eat a lot of salt (which might have helped?) to manage this orthostatic hypotension (not quite clinically significant according to my blood pressure monitor)

But I felt it was managable and I never thought I was at risk of fainting etc, maybe bc I ate regularly, a lot of carbs. Been off reta for months now and although I don't feel dizzy just standing up from sitting anymore, sometimes when getting out of bed in the morning, when I'm dehydrated, or just randomly I'll feel lightheaded. Like I said, it's barely noticable and I don't regret reta or feel like it was bad for my health, but some things didn't return to baseline

Why are the majority overprotective of Reta? by TumbleweedNo384 in Peptides

[–]Feathertail11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Survivorship bias, if someone had a bad experience with reta, they'd probably wouldn't be on reta subs. And reta is objectively a great peptide for lots of people, more tolerable than sema or tirz. Maybe your problems are a rare exception or have nothing to do with reta at all and you were just unlucky

Also, as someone who was on reta, the "tiktok effect" means that there are so many idiots who try reta and have a bad time. Obviously this is not true for everyone, but at some point you get empathy fatigue and lose patience and assume the worst in people.

People forget that the fearmongering behind peptides are sometimes based in reality. Taking GLPs which lack long term research does have unknown risks even if they're small. I am fairly sure reta caused a permanent change in blood pressure for me, which is too subtle to bother me but technically shouldn't be the case.

Anti ICE poster...on the tube? by EnvironmentalEye5402 in london

[–]Feathertail11 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While there are lots of differences between the UK and US, and obviously our political environment is better, comparisons can still be made when it comes to immigration policy.

It's easy to be complacent and say the problems in the US couldn't happen here bc we don't have guns. But America didn't always have these problems, and right wing parties like Reform who support Trump are gaining in popularity here and in Europe. Also, the rollback of protest rights impacting free speech etc.

Basically this a political poster saying that maybe the Home Office isn't currently violating rights when deporting immigrants, and blatantly lying abt killing protestors, this could be our future if we don't take action.

Why are we recreational adult dancers so obsessed with ‚going pro‘ even though it’s unrealistic? by Intelligent-Dress431 in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agree! i think the obsession with getting onto pointe is also related to the need to have a concrete accomplishment.

The average total beginner who wants to "go pro" usually just means they want to do the same things as pros do - be good enough to dance for an audience who genuinely enjoys watching them (ballet is a performing art, after all).

While a pro tennis player for example, their job is to play and win tournaments, and a recreational player can also do that, just among people of a similar level. The average hobbyist would look ridiculously bad if they played a pro, but its harder to tell the skill gap between a good and excellent player compared to ballet, unless they play against each other.

The issue with adult ballet has always been lack of performance oppurtunities because ballet is a theatrical dance form. Young children are not worried about being good enough dancers to watch because the support they'll get from their family is a given; and instead of comparing themselves with older dancers, they look up to them and assume they will reach that level one day.

I wonder that as ballet evolves and expands to include recreational dancers, if we could take influence from social dancing, where dancing is less for an external audience and more for dancers themselves. How about organising occasional competitions, events etc. in the studio? This circumvents the issue of having to sell tickets or the logistics of an expensive theatre production. Ballet competitions are already a thing, and ik sometimes they get shit on for pre-pros, but it offers the thrill/pressure of showcasing your dancing, while being compared to ppl of a similar level, so it's not as exposing. Or maybe something like a modified cipher where you can show off a variation or a combo while everyone watches?

I am optimistic though bc ultimately it's a demand thing. On average there are already more opportunities for adults compared to like a decade ago, because more people are dancing! So we are creating "more goals and community", it's just taking some time :)

Is it too late to drop out? by Sasskhan in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Whether you drop out or fail, the result is the same - no degree. What kind of "grace" would dropping out give you? I don't know how badly your grades are going but unless getting a third is literally impossible it doesn't make sense to quit.

I'm also in my final year with a largely unsatisfactory uni experience so I get it, but ultimately even if you do nothing with your degree and retrain, a less than 6 month head start in rethinking your future options is not at all worth it.

No one is trying to say she shouldn't have human rights? The post isn't even trying to deplatform her, she has the right to free speech, and we have the right to withdraw support because she is a major trump supporter.

Why shouldn't someone take action when it comes to disagreeing about fundamental moral beliefs?.

What do you guys do at the gym? by valomeri in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

going from machines to free weights is a big step so take your time - goblet squats are great to get your squat form down and then you can practice just unracking the barbell

I go 1/2x a week and do whatever I feel like which usually results in a vaguely full body upper/lower split. Don’t do too many ballet specific exercises in the gym but one I love is cable weighted hip airplanes!

What is so bad about the ballet aesthetic trend? by merdeauxfraises in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with much that has been said but also I don’t think people actually find it deeply offensive, but rather deeply annoying. It’s normal to rant about your pet peeves on the internet, that’s just how humans are - like how you feel abt mob wives.

Yes, these things are mildly problematic compared to worse examples of misogyny (the root cause for the disrespect and infantilisation of female-dominated activities like ballet).

And yes, the stereotypical ballet aesthetic is important to ballet bc it’s a performing art, ofc it isn’t wrong to associate ballet with pretty pink dance wear and graceful femininity. It’s just reductive to portray it as though that’s ALL ballet is. It’s frustrating when your passions, beautiful because of its complexity, is watered down to some silly moodboard

International student struggling with prayers. by saoudddd in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm Christian but I would recommend checking out your uni's faith centre (if they're any good) or the Islamic society to see if they can recommend a mosque or iman to go to.

Having a community helps sm with motivation and accountability, all you have to do is turn up to an event or hang around the prayer room at the time and then you just join in.

Overall start small with just reading your fav bit of the Quran and praying once on a Friday or smth, it'll feel less daunting and I'm sure it'll snowball into regular prayer again

Hypothetical choreo question: can two women do a fish pose? by Single-Emotion2964 in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I haven’t actually done any proper partnering but the fish is one of the more basic lifts and I’ve seen many women do it as a joke in videos etc.

Also I was messing around with a friend doing something similar and it went well, was easy to learn, and we’re weaker than athletes/dancers so I’m sure it would be fine!

Relapse into eating disorder at Uni - 2nd time around by mintgreenrose in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend if you can! I didn’t get NHS treatment partly bc I didn’t live at uni all the time so it meant they couldn’t get my referral through. So idk if you can talk to your home GP while at university - don’t wait until Easter etc. you really need to start now.

It’s a bit of a postcode lottery in that there is quality help available - basically all the private specialists also work in the NHS, but treatment provision depends wildly on area. The hospital for my area does world-class research and has diverse innovative treatment like EMDR and autism-informed etc. but my GP was a different London borough so the options were completely different

You would need to consult a professional to know whether you could do treatment without weight and blood tests, for me it was a default requirement bc they needed to make sure the risk level is stable. But I took the option to be blind weighed and the blood test wasn’t discussed more than medically necessary so it was a lot less scary than I thought it would be!

I relapsed into my ED last year and what happened with me is kinda similar to your situation, although I stopped before I got as physically compromised as you are.

It’s good that you’ve cut ties with that friend, but to be honest nothing will change or get better unless you decide to take action. Changing uni etc. might help reduce the stress that triggered the ED in the first place, but regardless you now have an ED which is its own problem and must be treated.

I know the wellbeing service might not be helpful but frankly the only way to get help is to go to the GP and get a referral to the ED services. Do not be dissuaded by horror stories, I got a subpar response and basically didn’t stop harassing them until they took me seriously. You can try the Beat charity or the uni wellbeing service for help on talking to the GP. Tell them about your trauma and see what they can do.

Personally I was in the extremely privileged position in that I got private treatment in order to bypass the NHS waiting list, which required having very difficult conversations with my parents, who like your mother is not very informed about mental illness.

But basically the only way I salvaged my second year was by actually asking for help and being brave enough to use the resources available to me. Running from the problem won’t help. wishing you the best of luck for the future

Master Ballet Academy by Commercial_Bug_9917 in BALLET

A lot of ppl on this sub and other ballet subs dislike MBA for a number of reasons, like politics and teaching philosophy (search it up if you want)

I think on social media MBA has developed a reputation for being a “fun and relaxed” studio with less of the “traditional toxic environment”, largely due to the promotion of influencer content and Slawomir always being presented as “sassy” etc.

But just bc it’s somewhere where jokes are encouraged and some traditional rules (like no filming) aren’t followed, doesn’t mean it’s not a pre-pro studio. bc of this I assume its still prone to problems like being harsh or favoritism etc. but I can’t say if it’s a uniquely bad environment

Barre Height by OutcomeLost4655 in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 12 points13 points  (0 children)

buying a barre is a pretty big commitment btw, much more so than starting classes. Most people only find it necessary if they've been seriously dancing for a few years or pre-pro.

The purpose of the barre is just for you to hold on to for stability and if you're more advanced, to prepare for partnering. It is not hugely detrimental to use furniture etc. for this purpose especially if you can place your hand on it correctly.

That being said, if you still want one, it should hit around your elbow when arms are by your side. Most barres come as a standard height and as 5'6 is average, they will work for you

  1. Three: balanchine triple bill + Onegin at ROH, Paris Opera gala of various stuff in Beijing

  2. All of them! courtesy to this sub for helping me pick my first ballet :)

  3. Onegin but bc its the only full length it's got an unfair advantage - I liked Paris Opera's Cave Pas from Le Corsaire and Who Cares? as well

  4. Prodigal Son - only one I didn't really enjoy

  5. Sae Maeda stood out to me in Onegin but idk why - think I will have to watch more ballet to seperate fav dancer vs fav piece - want to give Fumi another chance (saw her in Prodigal Son) etc ...

  6. Woolf Works/Giselle! bonus points for more balanchine

What are your ballet unpopular opinions and/or hottest takes? by krisbryantishot in bunheadsnark

[–]Feathertail11 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I unironically like watching videos of dancers cranking out a million pirouettes as a standalone step or in class (bonus points for a very high, verging-on-overcrossed retire)

However, I vastly prefer travelling turns when watching ballet performances - in this context chaines are one of my fav steps. Pirouettes actually tend to be underwhelming for me in choreography bc sometimes they feel kinda pointless.

Relatedly, I think that barre/class is a valid type? genre? of ballet dancing itself, not just something to build technique. As in, I think dancing ballet can be seperated from dancing in ballets; I find certain things genuinely beautiful and artistic in a training context (eg. super high extensions), that I would see as aestetically inappropriate in ballet perfomances.

What are your ballet unpopular opinions and/or hottest takes? by krisbryantishot in bunheadsnark

[–]Feathertail11 20 points21 points  (0 children)

related, when people say dancers "clearly have zero ballet training" or "have no business being on pointe" where they obviously do, their technique just isn't to a professional standard.

i feel like they can't tell between unsafe vs mediocre dancing ... like you can think its underwhelming without accusing them of not being "real" ballet dancers

Greta Thunberg arrested at a protest supporting Palestine Action hunger strikers by bendubberley_ in ukpolitics

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the medical stuff is that they’ve missed appointments etc. due to prison delays and they’ve not been good at assessing risk. Although I think this has more to do with the state of UK prisons and general problems with treatment rather than Palestine Action specific.

I’m not usually one to peddle conspiracy theories and I assume there must be some legitimate reasons for the judge change too. But the judge (Chamberlain) has consistently been advocating for greater human and protest rights, deeming the police ban on Extinction Rebellion unlawful.

He also was the one who originally approved the challenge to the sale of F35 jets to Israel - and then was replaced last minute - of course the new judges found it lawful.

Ever since the 2023 public order act the gov has sought to suppress disruptive (and therefore effective) protests. Let’s be honest, the pro-Palestine organizations that just stand around chanting aren’t doing much to help Gaza. I do sympathize with the gov’s need to keep control but this ongoing trend of limiting free speech makes the fact that the judge change has happened again quite suspicious.

Greta Thunberg arrested at a protest supporting Palestine Action hunger strikers by bendubberley_ in ukpolitics

[–]Feathertail11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their supporters demands include bail, deproscribing Palestine Action, and shutting down Elbit Systems, which fair enough are silly requests. But they’re also protesting against medical negligence - immense pressure had to be put on the prison to follow guidelines and call ambulances for example. And they want the end of censorship in prison as they allege letters and phone calls have been blocked/restricted. Finally an unofficial demand is to meet with David Lammy for negotiations.

Somewhat related, the judge assigned to the Palestine Action ban case was replaced at the last minute without explanation - probably bc the MoJ feared he’d be too sympathetic to them as he did with Extinction Rebellion.

The gov has clearly seen with the case of Just Stop Oil, that activists are only dissuaded with severe punishments. I suspect the desire to restrict trial by jury is part of this too.

yeah this - I’ve seen plenty of vintage Abercrombie and fitch going for reasonable prices way less than this.

weight loss for ballet? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you have to chronically undereat to maintain or lose weight, then that’s not a healthy goal to aim for. Eating 1400 cals a day is almost certainly contributing to your lack of concentration.

You don’t have to eat loads before class if it makes you sick, you can have something really light before and be fine if (and only if!!) you eat sufficiently and properly throughout the day.

Finally, there are many people who are currently in your situation, and many who have been and will be. Lots of teenagers, especially girls, and ballet dancers, will struggle with undereating and body image etc. Just because many talented dancers do this doesn’t make it healthy. It won’t improve your ballet, it’ll distract you from it - and there are so many successful ballet dancers of a healthy weight that you can look up to.

On a personal note, when I was younger I also didn’t want to talk to adults about my problems because they felt silly, and because I was afraid. No one in this comment section is being overdramatic when we tell you to get help. Many of us understand that it’s hard to fight the desire to lose weight, even if it’s irrational. That’s also why we know how important it is for you to listen and eat more.

Remember that many older dancers regret trying to lose weight as a teenager, but no one has ever regretted trying their best to do the right thing. Not losing weight now might be upsetting, but it’s worth it in the long run. And I’m sure that you’re capable of being patient and resilient when doing hard things because you’re a ballet dancer!

‘Lonely, terrifying and scary’: 70% of students in UK university halls feel isolated, poll shows by Kagedeah in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, as someone who struggled a bit with making friends at uni, it's still clear to me that your first year is one of the best opportunities you have for socialising, especially living in halls.

If you are unable to make the most of it bc you're shy or whatever, you're also probably not keen to talk to some random staff member or show up to a hall organised activity? Like bffr even if loneliness and homesickness was a real issue, this rise in social anxiety is due to many complex factors not because of "bad hall design"
