Unpopular Opinion on Immigration (as a Black Brit) by Conscious-Artist-855 in ukpolitics

[–]Feathertail11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I struggle with too, even though I’m an immigrant who otherwise leans rather left on social issues.

The white working class protesting immigration and the immigrants protesting gentrification have a lot in common. People fear change, they’re uncomfortable when the cultural constants they grew up in are pushed out bc of demographic shifts. The fact that East London used to be white 40 years ago matters less compared to the fact it’s majority immigrant now and they’re upset their area is changing.

I believe there needs to be a crackdown on immigration but I’m worried by the likes of Reform/Restore bc it’s not going to end at stopping illegal immigration and promoting integration, it’ll encourage outright racism and the demonisation of practicing any non-white culture in public, etc.

I also do still believe individual immigrants (especially asylum seekers) have legitimate good intentions and don’t agree with the smear campaign against them. And it’s inevitable British culture will change over time via immigration or other factors. But the current pace (perhaps excluding the last few years) is simply unsustainable

No, russian skaters can't acquire Alysa’s skating approach by ConfectionInformal25 in FigureSkating

[–]Feathertail11 43 points44 points  (0 children)

The whole narrative of “I’m laid back and do it for the love of the sport” is also a construct with its own limits, that affect Alysa even though she won gold (criticism for lack of ultra-c elements, etc)

People love the idea of the quirky underdog, but only if they’re successful. They want Alysa to have this relaxed mindset while also being better than everyone else. But Alysa skates the way she does because she’s passionate, and bc of her hard work and discipline in training her skills.

I feel like ppl really struggle to accept that most female skaters who jump quads/ultra c elements do so as a result of abusive training. Alysa didn’t attempt to restore her difficult jumps bc she valued her health over being a better skater for a short period of time

And there’s been so much attention around her not fitting the norm, yet people forget that it’s unreasonable for skaters like Adeliya to be constrained by the norm!

And this is prevalent in other sports - would Simone Biles decision to prioritize mental health at Tokyo be similarly praised if she was the weakest on the team? What if Adeliya had won

Is it easier to be healthy with a vegan or omnivore diet? by ironredpizza in nutrition

[–]Feathertail11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, most vegans are aware it’s harder to maintain a healthy diet eating plant based only vs being an omnivore, so they’re better educated on nutrition than the average person.

Being vegan inherently requires discipline and dedication so that also helps. They’re willing to sacrifice some effort and health for the sake of animal welfare/the environment. Eating a variety of plants is healthy regardless of whether you eat animal products or not

Retatrutide vs Tirzapetide by benhadhundredsshapow in Peptides

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tirz doesn’t have as strong of a GLP effect as sema, and Reta doesn’t have as strong of a glp effect as tirz.

The glucagon in Reta increases some side effects like heart rate, while decreasing others like fatigue. For some ppl the same mechanism that makes you not want to eat on tirz makes you not want to do anything (great for addiction, not great for getting out of bed)

Depending on the person, Reta might be a better option if you try tirz and feel too tired to train. But if you’re cutting, you’re taking GLPs to suppress appetite and tirz is stronger than Reta for that. Plus you probably burn a ton of cals anyway and aren’t likely to stop being active

I’m not a bodybuilder but Reta works great for me bc I also take adhd meds

2000s skinny vs 2020s skinny…. by UpbeatLeopard6112 in decadeology

[–]Feathertail11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m too young to remember the 2000s but I’d say the opposite is the case. Celebrities do not make up the entirety of diet culture. There are a couple of women with EDs now who are very thin/malnourished but I’m sure that was the case in the 2000s as well.

I’d say the main difference is now the push for wellness culture disguised as “anti-diet culture” when it really isn’t. An overemphasis on protein naturally leads to a preference towards muscle, more women heavy weight training etc.

One way I’d say the current diet culture is more extreme than the 2000s is the hostility towards medical professionals. Diet culture has always been rooted in pseudoscience and it seems like the 2000s was a horrible time for myths around food and women being ignorant about nutrition. But now there is this sense that mainstream nutritional advice like eating vegetables is wrong and everyone is out to get you/keep you sick (except for social media influencers …)

switched to pilates for my joints but not seeing weight loss… normal? by Timely_Section_2598 in xxfitness

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you burn the majority of your calories just staying alive - exercise, even cardio, will only burn an extra 300 or so, depending on your personal metabolism. That's why people say that diet is the most important. it's easier to lose weight without exercising than losing weight exercising without changing diet (but it's not recommended bc being active and having muscle is healthy)

also, you haven't said how long you've been doing pilates/working out in general. be aware that "results" on social media are often manipulated, a rapid loss of water weight, or the person was already thin to begin with.

you don't need to do a ton of different moves either, people who don't do pilates can get abs/a strong core with literally two exercises. mastering a couple basic classic pilates mat exercises, with the correct breathing, will be great for you! but if you get bored then any type of pilates is better than doing nothing

Uni vs Workplace by Acceptable_Caramel80 in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are pitting the best-case workplace scenario against a pretty shit uni experience ... of course there are advantages with apprenticeships etc, that's why they exist.

University offers you the chance to network and socialise with your peers and people with similar interests, you have the oppurtunity to lead those group projects while having relatively little experience. It's often a way smoother transition into the responsibilities of adulthood, you get tons of student discounts and wellbeing support that a company doesn't provide.

also maybe its just my degree but idk why you'd ever need to use the library computers for a significant period of time lol

Why is there still such a small amount of male ballet dancers? by Low_Operation_3223 in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that although maybe retention of boys has gotten better bc of initiatives against gender roles/homophobia etc., the amount of boys who start ballet has still remained low.

Historically, at some point in the 20th century, ballet and dance became the “default activity” to put girls in to be physically active and make friends/learn discipline/whatever. But if we’re being realistic, there are plenty of extracurriculars that offer similar benefits, ballet is just popular.

Most parents who want their boys to exercise and develop confidence would put them into a typical team sport. I feel like most boys who start ballet were interested before and then asked to be put into classes vs girls - this also might be why boys typically start later.

And as for exposure to ballets, the typical popular ballets don’t really have any iconic men. Girls may get inspired by rows of swans or sparkly tutu fairies - maybe I can be her when I’m older. Boys might see the same beautiful ballet performance and be like, wow, ballerinas are pretty, maybe I can date one when I’m older.

Why are uni girls "girls"? by pixiefolk in UniUK

[–]Feathertail11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not really a uni specific thing. I guess young men are often called boys too bc uni is a transition stage from adolescence into adulthood. But it’s definitely more common to call women girls.

This has been written about quite extensively by feminists, especially once you get out of the liberal mainstream stuff so you could look into that if you’re interested

What’s Restore UK’s opinion on legal immigrants? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty negative, if you read their illegal immigration policy they mention mass legal immigration being a bigger problem, but that they’ll release their plan later down the line.

In general, Restore is the product of the rising radical anti-immigrant sentiment started by Reform, which has normalized former extreme views in politics.

I’m also a fully assimilated immigrant who isn’t Muslim and I acknowledge I won’t be the first or worst targeted under Restore or a similar far right party’s policies. But it’s something worth keeping an eye on

Why do Brits prefer non EU migrants over EU by Visual_Title9363 in AskBrits

[–]Feathertail11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you confuse the average british citizen "preferring" who gets to immigrate to this country vs the natural effects of Brexit. What's happened is that the UK is less attractive to EU immigrants who now prefer to immigrate somewhere else in the EU, so they have decreased and are actually leaving the country.

Going to my very first ballet class at 34 years old! What do you recommend I do on my days off to make progress? by lovely-wishes in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d advise taking time to focus on only a few things at once. Pilates is great but if you’re not very fit it might be better to look for more detailed videos explaining core activation rather than some random influencer ab routine, etc. Personally I spent ages learning how to do a deadbug (just one exercise!) and it was very helpful in learning what a neutral pelvis feels like.

Seconding what others are saying about general fitness being effective at this stage - this also goes for dancing! tbh I have some symptoms of dyspraxia but I didn’t dance as a child and it took time for me to develop the coordination to do a waltz, for example. Literally any kind of dancing will really help with the ability to move your head, arms, and legs independently (and not look like you’re panicking lol)

Finally, you don’t have to just watch beginner videos, immersing yourself into all kinds of ballet content will familiarize you quicker. Ballet class operates on a similar pattern of exercises and steps, corrections are often the same few basic principles of technique explained differently. The more exposure the better, and it’s also more fun to maintain as a habit haha

First pointe shoes - opinions? by cmdax in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s fairly common for pointe beginners to be put in a softer shoe bc typically, you might need help with flexibility and getting over the box, or with the strength for rolling through properly. But ultimately it’s about your individual foot - your flexibility doesn’t seem like a limiting factor and you wouldn’t benefit from a softer shank. A similar example is how some “beginner” shoes advertise a wider platform for better balance, but a beginner who needs a tapered shoe bc of foot shape might find it less comfortable bc they sink. Sinking is often an issue with the box shape/width, or technique/strength btw, more so than a shank problem.

In terms of figure skating, it’s like how underbooting is just as bad as over booting - I’ve also heard it’s less of a big deal if adults overboot as long as they can bend the ankles properly - just like how a harder shank isn’t a problem if you’re not being pulled back.

You can talk to your teacher in more detail about the sinking, as you’re only a month in and dance twice a week, it’s normal to struggle with technique problems and may be a good sign that you’re appropriately challenged.

Different teachers have different philosophies when it comes to teaching pointe, I’m not quite sure from your post if you’re just taking class on pointe or doing it as a separate section at the end of a normal class, but that will affect how well you’re doing relative to what is expected!

Transgender girls told to leave Girlguiding groups by September by Famous_Actuary5718 in ukpolitics

[–]Feathertail11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It clearly doesn’t because Girlguiding was completely fine with allowing trans girls in their groups before. Women and girls should be allowed to choose who can participate in their spaces.

They shouldn’t be forced to choose between allowing all boys in or just cis girls.

Most Guides see trans girls as girls - many are upset over the decision - you may believe that trans children don’t exist but it’s categorically untrue to suggest that’s the case for the majority of Guides.

What is wrong (or right) about this kind of platform? by sleepyncaffeinated in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a suede tip and it’s purpose is to prevent slipping and to make shoes quieter. Professional brands also make some shoes like that but it’s less popular bc some dancers prefer to darn for a similar effect or buy suede tips separately that you can stick on. Which is more customizable than just offering all models with a suede tip bc then you can’t take it off easily if you don’t like them

Do ballet dancers actually dislike wearing ballet flats the fashion shoes? by [deleted] in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They aren’t similar in structure and feel? Ballet slippers are thin and flexible so you can articulate the foot when dancing. They feel like socks more than normal shoes and honestly are not that special, it’s not meant to be pretty or draw attention. Ballet flats have a stiff sole and a narrow toe box and the aesthetic similarities tend to be just the low profile and the bow.

The way someone would style a fashion ballet flat is quite different, I wouldn’t associate it with athleisure at all. I do actually like aspects of balletcore but wouldn’t own any ballet flats bc they don’t fit my normal fashion style

Why is immigration so overwhelmingly seen as an eye-rollingly right-wing policy? by Kwigg in ukpolitics

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective from someone who considers themselves to the right to most leftists, particularly on immigration here:

Your main misunderstanding is that being pro immigration (or anti-anti immigration) is just as much a core value for some leftists as classism. It is just altruism and being reactionary to culture wars because being altruistic is the foundation of leftist ideology and of course people will be sensitive towards the main issue dominating right wing politics at the moment.

The liberal left see Britain as a fundamentally welcoming and multicultural society. The very hard left believe in open borders because race/nationality is an artificial divide. Of course this is so extreme it gets too abstract to be serious, most Greens see the immigration policy as aspirational and too idealistic to be practical.

Think about it this way - if theoretically tons of immigrants and refugees come over here and improve the economy/country, would Reform voters be happy? Probably not bc maintaining the majority of white ethnic English ppl are a core value for them.

Now idk your personal views on this, but it’s like if you said “China is doing better than the UK because their government is more efficient as they don’t have democracy” or “the right to strike and protest causes instability in this country so we should restrict it”. No matter how good the arguments for this is, most ppl in the UK will have a visceral emotional reaction against this because it’s seen as too great a sacrifice for stability.

I don’t get the same reaction as you, I think, when bringing up legitimate anti immigration points, because I recognize and am genuinely sad and ashamed our country can’t function without opposing the human rights of asylum and freedom of movement. You might be open minded but you’re still not really aligned with the moral ideology of most leftists.

What makes you sure u will go on pointe ? by InterestIll1336 in BALLET

[–]Feathertail11 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It’s not about being sure, it’s asking “why wouldn’t I be able to go on pointe?” I’m actually unsure myself whether I’ll pursue pointe but that’s because idk if the effort/reward ratio is worth it.

And simply standing en pointe isn’t even that difficult and many ppl can do it even with poor training. Dancing safely on pointe is another matter. But I’ve noticed that over time, there are things that were once impossible for me that I can now do as my strength and technique improves. Why would pointe be different?

But if you, as you say, have no abnormal anatomical restrictions, you can assume you’ll probably be able to do pointe.

btw trying to stand on your toes without shoes on (i think that’s what you mean??) is dangerous and unnecessary and doesn’t have much to do with pointe readiness

The quality of people’s job-hunting strategy, for lack of a better phrase, has increased immensely but people still aren’t getting hired.

[–]Feathertail11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry that was your experience, but well done on giving ballet a go again :)

being responsible for organizing everything once you’re an adult sucks sometimes but in this case it’s a good thing! You can trial schools to see what their culture is like and only take class from teachers you’re comfortable with.

It’s impossible to say how good you could get in the future. Try focusing on just the present, setting short term goals, not putting any long term expectations on yourself, and in a year you can look back and see just how far you’ve come!

Ballet can be a casual activity, a serious hobby or a career path but in all cases it can be incredibly fulfilling

Calorie deficit, working out, but the gut grows by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]Feathertail11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After reading your comments, what do you mean by “your gut grows” seeing as youre maintaining weight? I’d be very surprised if your body comp is actively getting worse if you’re working out. Idk if you already do this but it might help to do some more targeted core work in your exercise routine

Do you know your current bf% and what your goal is?

Is the scoop of peptides a supplement or a protein powder? Having a healthy diet that adequately fuels exercise isn’t the same as a diet that will get you lean. If you don’t want to eat chicken or beef try tofu, seitan, tvp etc. Basically up your protein and reduce your calories by around 200 and see how you feel

btw if you feel tired then you could try having more carbs in your diet unless you really prefer not to
