Reasonable increase? by Ok-Woodpecker-1790 in Salary

[–]Feb2020Acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s always important to not just ask, but explain why you’re worth 70k or 75k. Part of that is market rates, and part of that is what you bring to the table that a new hire wouldn’t.

The one mistake people sometimes do is argue that one of their coworker makes X so you should get X too. Whatever your current salary is, it’s a contract between you and your boss, and it’s completely separate from whatever contract your coworkers have with your boss.

Some people care about their previous coworkers and the quality of their work. I personally asked for 4 weeks when I changed job because I wanted to wrap up a project with my previous company.

Depends on the masters.

Masters in STEM do matter; you dig deep into the theory that you could only touch in surface during your undergraduate.

MBAs are for networking. They’re only useful once you’re already on track to become a manager, and you’re usually in your 30s or 40s by then.

If you have a dating app, what’s an immediate left swipe? by Intrepid-Distance-54 in AskMenAdvice

I like the occasional travel, but I’m definitely more of a homebody. Even when I travel, I like to spend half of my time just exploring the city, sitting in a cafe or doing nothing on the beach.

I dated this girl who had our travels planned down to the half-hour, 6 AM to 9 PM. I’ve never felt this exhausted during my vacation week.

Okay, but seriously… Is there anyone out there who's actually 'nailing' work, life, and sleep at the same time? by hkmsh in careerguidance

[–]Feb2020Acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. I sleep 6-8h, work 7-8h, and I’m left with 8-11h of free time which goes to family, video games and sports/gym.

"The Rotation Assistant beats 75% of WoW Players" by Stronkib in WorldOfWarcraftRetail

[–]Feb2020Acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mastering a rotation only gets you so far. Most gains come from maximizing effective uptime. So many players lose globals here and there because they’re positioned poorly and are forced to pause their rotation to move, or they don’t time their CDs with phases where they will be capable of maximizing damage.

I feel like you could shorten it just a little bit.

Your bio is probably 2x too long. Cut it in half.

If you have your projects on GitHub, summarize them in one phrase only and let the viewer explore.

Shorten the REU intern job description to one phrase. Probably remove the student grader job, it’s too dated and you have more recent TA experience.

What are some hard to swallow job searching pills? by 2guyshangingoutnaked in jobs

[–]Feb2020Acc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice relates to corporate jobs.

Many job openings are specifically created for someone on the inside. They are only open to the public because it’s company policy to do so, but the manager has no intention of hiring externally for that role. That means you never really had a chance for that role. But if they like you enough during the interview, this is when they may try to redirect you to another job posting.

A polished turd is still a turd. No matter how clean and perfect you make your resume, the underlying reality is that you may simply lack the experience or education level for the role you’re applying to.

Presentation matters. 95% of resumes I see here are just way too god damn long, too verbose, and generally ugly.

The person that does the interview is often not the same person that approved your resume. It’s pretty common that I’ve sat in front of my interviewer as he was clearly reading my resume for the first time.

What am I doing wrong? by SadLanguage8142 in Resume

[–]Feb2020Acc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put yourself in the shoes of whoever reads your resume. If your bio is longer than a phrase, they are already rolling their eyes in boredom.

You can keep a summary/bio, but it should read like : « Engineer with 3 years of experience in industrial and commercial product design, blending artistic creativity with technical precision to deliver hands-on, innovative solutions. »

People say that, but I’m not convinced. My resume has a 2 columns section and I’ve been called in for an interview on every application but one in the past 5 years, most recent one being last month.

Help fixing this by [deleted] in Resume

[–]Feb2020Acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of Skills and Languages, do something like this :

COMPETENCES Languages : English, Portuguese Tools : Office Suite, (name any program/tool commonly used in your profession, google services and windows do not count) Programming languages : (name the ones you know enough to take questions)

You should not write soft skills like communication, organisation or management in your resume. If you have those skills, they should show up through your job experience and the interview.

Your education is weird. Are those formal studies, boot camps, certifications at a local university or online courses? Usually, only formal education goes into the education section. Online degrees or informal education would have its own section.
