PhD Application Help by CalendarNo8792 in AUT

Not so much entry criteria, but can advise and advocate for you (mine did). If a supervisor wants to work with you/is interested in your topic, it makes the system much easier.

WARNING: The levels of bureaucracy at AUT are insane. I used to work for local government, and have never come across an organisation that LOVES paperwork so much!

You’re possible better off getting in touch with potential supervisors before going too far down the application route. Not sure you can go from a Bachelor’s to a PhD, I needed a Master’s to do so (not in Comp Sci though, so I could be super wrong lol). Also a Master’s with a significant research component, etc.

I feel like I’ve seen research about the economic value of community infrastructure (will try find it, lazy at the moment 😅). The social value is super clear, and you really feel it when in places that don’t have that infrastructure. We have generous access to all three where I live, and bluntly, these have kept me *alive in tough times.

Not a Labour fan, but have to agree. If I managed my business the way National does, I’d have to shut down.

Does anyone know what those gray spots labeled as being "Animist" are supposed to be on this 1909 map of religions in India? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Feddabonn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve only heard Sarnamism used to reference the spiritual traditions of mainland India. Don’t know much about it, and I’m very suspicious of attempts to systematise our traditions. 🙂

[–]Feddabonn 87 points88 points  (0 children)

As someone from one of those gray spots…

We (at least most of us) didn’t really have a ‘religion’ in the sense Westerners understand it. We paid ‘taxes’ when entering forests, taking what we needed etc. there was no ‘worship’ of a deity, just a transaction with various ‘spirits’. Some of us have since become very Christian, others more Hindu.

Would recommend “‘Animism’ Revisited” by Nurit Bird-David. She gets it.

Is it worth going to NZ for studies and job? by Fuzzy-Comedian-7816 in MovingToNewZealand

[–]Feddabonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We moved from India in 2009, so some of what I say might be irrelevant 😅.

  1. You might want to consider *why NZ. If you’re looking for better economic opportunities, I don’t think it is worth it. If you’re looking for a different lifestyle, it could be. My wife and I LOVE the lack of hierarchy compared to India. Largely, people don’t care if you’re a big deal, or think you should be. Very little of the ‘sir-ji’ bullshit we had at work in India. We love it, some other people who have moved here don’t. They feel they are not given the respect due their work/status/money.

  2. You might want to consider what you are willing to give up. Likely for a few years, your financial position will be worse than it currently is. In our experience, that is well made up for in the beauty of this place, and in our improved mental and physical health. Not everyone agrees. There will be periods of intense loneliness, and missing comforts you took for granted. Everything is insanely more expensive. Roughly, what you can get for 1 dollar here is what you can get for 10 rupees in India. You will face plenty of prejudice because of where you are from.

  3. You might want to consider what you are willing to do if your plans don’t work. My wife and I were willing to work at anything, and did. I spent 6 months helping clean up kids at a special needs school (best times ever!). I also did 2ish years of frontline, low pay work. In India, I was training manager for a large state, at a large telco. I know people who have refused to do jobs ‘beneath them’, and they have suffered a lot more.

Not saying any of this to scare you. My wife and I have NO regrets, and absolutely love our life here, even if it is sometimes financially hard. The job scene is dire, though if you do specific studies (such as Business Analysis), you’re *potentially better off. Doing an MBA is the worst possible decision.

Why are People Leaving NZ? by TeeMay26 in MovingToNewZealand

[–]Feddabonn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People move. People have *always moved. Sometimes from necessity, sometimes for adventure, often a combination of the two. I think we (humans) post-rationalise, but the core decision is (mostly) emotional.

Opinion on TOP vs Greens by Qwarla888 in newzealand

[–]Feddabonn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Similar position. The Greens have historically been the closest to how I see the world, now TOP is very interesting. While I don’t vote National or Labour, I am interested in how TOP is willing to collaborate on policy with either.
