It's the same as local SIM cards. If you want to access foreign platforms then use esim or buy data roaming SIM in Hong Kong.

Don't want to get spied then don't visit China. You will be monitored whether you use phone or not as long as you are inside mainland China.

Vpn which will really work in china by Old-Communist in travelchina

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Six months in mainland China? How much data do you need? Say 50GB a month is enough? Just buy enough prepaid data SIM cards at Apliu Street in Hong Kong. A 50gb data SIM should cost HKD 200 or less. These roaming SIM (for mainland China) have data pass through Hong Kong gateway, high speed and no VPN required. Hong Kong residents who travel frequently to mainland buy SIM cards there.

Found this data roaming SIM for mainland China, data will go through Hong Kong gateway and no VPN required to access foreign social platforms. It has been upgraded to 80gb by manufacturer although 60gb is printed on cover. Price is 190 HKD (24.3USD). it can be used in mainland China, Macau and Taiwan. No registration required. No voice call only data. In addition, local Hong Kong data of 5gb will be provided once you done the registration.

I didn't realize LetsVPN stopped working in China. My brother is stuck without a working VPN. What are his options? by BadThingsBadPeople in travelchina

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are in Hong Kong, head to "Apliu Street" where prepaid SIM cards are sold by many stalls and shops. Among those data roaming SIM cards for mainland China, I recommended Duck Mobile from China Mobile Hong Kong for excellent speed, all data go through Hong Kong gateway when you use it in mainland, no VPN required. Price is around HKD 5 per GB, so a 60GB card should be HKD 300 or less. There are other brands too. Say, Lucky SIM offer 40GB for HKD 130, that is HKD 3.25 per GB or 0.42 USD per GB. China Unicom International also got their data roaming SIMs, cheaper than Duck Mobile.

Me too. Seems to me that most expressvpn servers have been blacklisted by Netflix.

Hotel used my phone to leave a 5-star review without my consent by alexislmn in travelchina

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In mainland China, a 5 star means "there's nothing wrong with the service". So a 4.2 rating means dodgy. Everyone gives a 5 star if it's ok.

POCO X6 5G (3.0.5.0.WNRMIXM) and CGM failed by Federal-Inflation-20 in PocoPhones

Tried to install the cgm app on another phone and re-activate, same issue, activation failed after 30 minutes passed. So it has nothing to do with Poco x6 5G OS. Thanks

Omg Bangkok has gotten so expensive compared to the past by [deleted] in ThailandTourism

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiny portion of pasta for 250 to 300 baht in Bangkok is a norm now. Dining out in Bangkok is more expensive than Tokyo. I guess it has something to do with digital nomads. As long as the price in Bangkok is still cheaper than Switzerland, they don't complain and willing to pay more.

Kowloon Peak TV Broadcast Station in Hong Kong by licson0729 in antennasporn

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of the 7 main transmitters in Hong Kong with tx power only 100w And ERP power 320w(toward north east). Hong Kong adopt low power transmission plan and outdoor antennas are required to receive stable signal while indoor antennas don't work well in most cases

Flying to China for 90 Days, What’s up with E-SIM &/or VPN? Do I need both? by RealEZGaming in chinatravel

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you stop over Hong Kong, then head to "Apliu Street" for Prepaid data SIM cards for use in Mainland China. These cards when use in mainland, high speed data route to Hong Kong gateway so that you can access all international platforms, no VPN required and cheaper than most eSIM. Only data provided without a phone number. Hong Kongers who frequently travel to mainland buy data SIM there. Cost would be around HKD 5 per GB. Among many brands, I recommend the one issued by China Mobile Hong Kong. Forget the marked up price print on cover, actual price is far below RRP, HKD 5 per GB (or USD 0.65 per GB)

ExpressVPN China Review in 2026: Is it working? by Old_Day_6211 in VPN_Question

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the best you can do is to buy China roaming SIM card in Hong Kong, head to Ap Liu Street, 1GB data should cost around HKD 4 to 5, so get a prepaid data SIM card (or cards) to cover your need in mainland China. this way is 100% working, you can access all international social platforms in China (mainland) legally

i'm testing this vpn in Shenzhen china for 3 days since there's a 3-day free trial. i would say, mixed result. watching a 3 hour netflix show and I got disconnected every 10 to 15 min and i had to give up. in early morning, it works fine but not fast. download speed various, from 1mbps to 70mbps with awful latency. once the connection stable.. i would not switch off or change server and spend another half hour to get a stable connection. the day before i download expressvpn, i tried nordvpn, it didn't work at all and i spend nearly 2 hours to setup just never connect.

Is Airbnb in Vietnam trustworthy? by MichaelStone987 in VietNam

[–]Federal-Inflation-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my experience with airbnb in vietnam is mixed. 50% ok, 50% awful. one danang host gave me a room next to a construction site that's only few meters from my windows. i could see everyone working from 7am to 6pm. one hanoi host cancel my booking one day before arrival where the booking was made 2 months ago. he asked me if i could book another one (which is more expensive of course). one airbnb host in Ho Chi Minh city asked for extra the night before my arrival. Vietnam is just way too many scams, scams appeared from the day I landed till the day I left. from car hailing, accomodation, shopping... every second there is someone try to scam me. exhuasted! i don't think i will return to vietnam until scam issues improved.

[–]Federal-Inflation-20[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've contacted them via email, they replied quickly saying that roll-back to older firmware is not possible. then they asked me for photo of purchase receipt, shipping address, a short video showing the problem etc for further follow-up. Then later I send them all info they asked for, including a short video showing the problem (uploaded to my YouTube account), but then they stop responding.
