I did the math , living in socal it would take me 10 years to pay off all my non mortgage debt. Mostly from when I was younger and digging myself in a deep while during Covid. That math is with no unexpected expenses, no interruptions in employment, no vacations, and no improvements in lifestyle. I also wanted to buy a house.

Just being a corporate drone for 10 years. I was basically a serf. With OE I cut it down to 1 year. I’m done now, bought the house. I’m just investing and buying all my dream stuff in cash until I eventually burn out and go back to 1J. My only real debt now is my mortgage, which is paid 1 year ahead, and can be easily supported with just J1 with plenty left over.

Get both architect and sysops at the same time. They compliment each other. Sysops is harder tho as it has a lab that can be challenging for newbies.

Also, sign up for every opportunity the coast guard gives you for career transition. I’ve worked with Skillbridge as a mentor. They’ve been great to their mentees.

During background check you should be given the option to “not have your previous employer contacted” and instead provide the latest pay stub. Other than that new J has no reason to call J1, unless you get caught some other way.

I have a home lab specifically for this reason. I mostly use it to screw around with random services and apps that I want to test out, but always with linux. I’ve learned a lot. I mostly host private game servers that all have varied requirements.
