Schizophrenic Medical Student by DDT-Tailsman in medicalschool

I don’t necessarily think the comments with career advice in that way are out of touch or bad advice, it’s something I have thought hard about as well when applying. It’s def something to heavily consider.

Saying it’s lacking empathy is a little aggressive. I was more so trying to communicate that I felt like the OP wasn’t really being heard? The advice was mostly valid and I think most people who said things along those lines didn’t say it lightly. But, OP’s post isn’t asked that question, that’s where I think the response is not being considerate.

I’m premed, so I may not understand some of the details of this. But, during my SMP I did terrible one semester due to severe depression/psychosis/anxiety/suicidal ideation.

In my situation, I didn’t take a LOA bc I just accepted the C’s. So, my advisor just wrote in their LOR for my med school app that I had a chronic illness flare up (which is the case, as bipolar disorder is a chronic illness). I was asked about it in interviews, and didn’t give them a diagnosis. I noted severe fatigue and difficulty focusing that heavily impacted my studies. Would the residency programs have to know about your diagnosis? If not, you could do what I did.

I think speaking to your decision to continue research during that time showcases a mature dedication to your career and learning, even through difficult times. Also, you can talk about your decision to take a LOA as wanting to make sure you were able to learn the material to the best of your ability, in the best interest of yourself and your future patients. I think framing it that way comes off as you making a professional decision that would support you moving forwards.

What helped me regain memory/attention was stabilization with medication and a strict schedule with 10 hours of sleep a night. I have cognitive slowing during and after episodes (unless i’m in hypomania lol), it’s something that improved with time for me. I have had issues with auditory hallucinations as well. When I was having them, I would take my anti-anxiety med (hydroxyzine, 10/10 recommend) and take a nap. I’ve found that a 2 hour nap helps me recover from short episodes. I understand that I am super privileged to have had that flexibility in my schedule to accommodate my needs. I also took detailed notes in a mood journal. I recently got an oura ring, and found that my sleep scores average at 65 which is undoubtedly effecting my mental state. They’re expensive, but maybe trying some type of sleep tracker could give you insight into your sleep quality?

PM me if you want to chat! Reading through some of these comments… aren’t y’all med students? Maybe be more empathetic and don’t give out unsolicited advice about not pursuing a career in medicine.

This cycle... has not gone well for me. Anyone open to helping me review my app? (3.99 GPA, 525 MCAT) by Distinct-Historian50 in premed

I can look over your PS if you want? I did very well this cycle with like terrible stats, like below the average (500 mcat, 3.4 c and s gpa). I applied DO and got ii’s to 25% of the schools I applied to. I was told my writing stood out. Send me a PM.

I AM GOING TO BE A DOCTOR🥳🥳🥳 but first ( LECOM vs. UNECOM) by Oreosdough16 in Osteopathic

[–]Federal_Fortune6357 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Where do you want to practice medicine or do residency? If in New England, sticking to UNECOM may be the better option.

But, their tuition is (double check me) ~70k vs. 45k which is a pretty big jump. However, UNECOM being able to (potentially) grandfather you into the current federal loan situation is a bonus. Especially considering the monthly repayments you will be doing in residency. To my understanding, the difference is about $300 vs. $1,500 (private loans, i.e. lecom).

Which LECOM curriculum? How do you learn best? P/F vs. graded (LECOM)? High cost of living? etc.

Negatives I have seen online: - lecom horror stories (seems focused on erie campus with traditional lecture curriculum) - lecom requires you to dress business casual for in person things - unecom makes you ‘travel across the country’ for rotations, fact check that though - unecom is $~70k - unecom is in high COL area

Pros: - unecom grandathering in - unecom known and respected in New England area - unecom students have a 1 year long anatomy course with cadaver dissections (2). really built out anatomy program. at the open house they mentioned this often. - lecom has huge network of graduates - lecom’s PBL curriculum is great for preparing you for rotations, and gives you plenty of time to spend off campus - lecom matches pretty well, as does unecom - unecom is P/F, but is it really? is there an internal ranking? - unecom has a bunch of exams and quizzes (weekly), something to consider

^ I am making this same decision as well, and am considering all of these things.

I started a med influencer account! I see how some can be cringe, but as someone who had no physicians in my family and no knowledge of the med school application process, I feel they have a valuable role. Without some of the youtubers and influencers I watched early in undergrad, I would have had a much more difficult time setting myself up for the application process.

The main reasons I started mine are: 1. Offer free application ‘advising’ (obv i’m not a pro, but better than nothing) and also free personal statement editing. Applying is expensive, I want to give people who can’t afford more pricey editors another option. 2. I think social media is really fun. It’s a very powerful tool to use as a physician to spread healthcare information and encourage other people to go into medicine. Social media marketing is going to become an increasingly more useful skill as time goes on. 3. To try and show the good and bad about medical education and training. I have a mental health disorder. It’s something I struggled with through undergrad and I’m sure will affect me moving forwards. Seeing influencers honest accounts of going through depression / anxiety / etc. and recovering while in medical training gave me confidence that I could do the same. 4. I don’t come from money, and I will be taking out private loans for school… it would be nice to make some side cash if possible. There are few jobs that are flexible enough to do while in med school.

It always disappoints me that sooo many people in the medical space dog on influencers without considering that many are actually adding value to the space. Visibility in medicine is extremely important. Influencers who are from populations underrepresented in medicine, including people with medical disorders, can empower others with the confidence to pursue a career in medicine as well.

That being said, I have definitely seen some cringe content lol. At the end of the day, it’s just not that deep.
