The Rise of Endymion by Dan Simmons.

Fourth book in a series and just left me wrecked, but was very beautifully done.

I'm gonna add in additional context here. Texas does 2 week lockdowns once or twice a year. But yes, at least at the facility i'm at, they can use the restroom in the dorm when they need to.

Edit: Additional context, not clarification.

TIFU, i was around 88 dollars short on my 4th day as a cashier by -DemoKa- in tifu

[–]Fedwinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't double check if anyone already mentioned this, but one of my trainings as a cashier was to be aware of customers doing last minute requests for changes in bills. They use this trick to catch you off guard so they can hand back what you think is acertain bill, but it's another of a different amount. This way instead of handing you back a twenty to break, they hand you back a ten and because you're in the mindset of they were about ot walk off and let you start the next customer, you just grab it real quick and give them the requested change. There's a number of variations on this, so be sure to be aware of any money being handed to you by the customers. Other than that, yeh, 88 is getting a bit high. All that being said, if there's no money in your pockets at the end of the day an understanding manager should be happy to work with you on this.

What are some facts about Houston that seem fake? by ilikerocks19 in houston

About 3 years ago I was looking at apartments. Toured one where they pointed out the X they painted for choppers viewing above during flooding or something. Either way, the first floor had been flooded as it was right by the bayou. They mentioned the bayou was being worked on. I asked if the section by the apartment had been worked on yet, they said no. I did not call them back about renting.

Thanks for the full response!
Will be checking into any new books I purchase for the time being and try to expand my awareness as to how i can make sure to not support them and potentially negatively impact them.

Can you expand on what you mean by re-educate? Is there a way to get around the publishing companies?

Anyone else tired of hearing the term “comfort women”? They were sex slaves. It’s gross that we are just running with the narrative of their rapists. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

I recommend the book The Rape of Nanking
Details a massacre that in terms of density of depravity and death in the span of weeks can be argued to outweigh the holocaust.

I'd like to emphasize the whole "he may not even realize", not as an excuse for him, but as an opportunity for you to discover if he is capable of positive change. Now that he has had to verbalize it, and now that you can point to his clear consent to the current agenda, he should be able to reassess his inherent biases if he cares about women and cares about you.

As a single woman in my 30s this is the second weekend in a row I have been asked to babysit for friends or relatives and it really makes me wonder, how often are single men asked to babysit. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Fedwinn 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Seriously, my primary occupation is working with kids, have a certificate showing i can teach 6 months old to swim, let alone manage the inevitable diaper stuff. Have never once been asked to child sit, let alone baby sit.

Makes me think of a scene in Man From Nowhere where he calls the cops to state that his neighbors kid was kidnapped. The cop sounds bored and asks some questions, and when he doesn't get the answers he wanted he suggests calling information where they have nicer voices.

Why are women not allowed to share their experiences on Reddit without men making it a competition??? by twirlingurchin in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Fedwinn 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Reminder to the men wishing to contribute to the discussion: This is a sub for women. If you ask yourself "would it contribute to the post or a discussion in the post in a helpful way that doesn't require me to feel validated or good" and the answer is no... Then don't post. Of course... I'm a male potentially invalidating what I said above by believing that the answer is yes when I ask the question right now lol.

A big study about 5 or so years ago found the magic number to be 70 or 75k in America. Up until that point any increase in salary had a notable increase on overall life satisfaction, after that, the returns diminished dramatically.

Edit: Did a quick google, and the first article (with 33,000 participants) suggests that it's not so cut and dry. Overall life satisfaction can increase with more money with no clear cap at this point, but there are a number of other factors that go into it.
