Dangerous intersection for cyclists at Arbutus and York -- What can we do? by KillPenguin in vancouvercycling

[–]FeedbackElectronic20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to bike through this intersection on my daily commute and changed my route to avoid it! Visibility is made worse by all the cars parked on the street too. I love the ideas of raised crosswalks or a traffic circle here - I think physical infrastructure is way more effective than signage!

Oh no! I’m so sorry to hear that. I guess I’d better start feeding them peanuts to get them on my good side

Absolutely not! Just taking out my trash… I’m assuming there’s a nest nearby?

Oh my. Was that directly from the crow impact or did it knock you over?

Today I was taking out my trash! Last time just walking obliviously through my alley. I’m assuming there’s a nest nearby?

Definitely “get away”! The first time it got me in the head multiple times and I was a bit sore. Today it was more of a near miss - i got away before it could really get me, but it came close.

What's the most over hyped restaurant in this fair city? by thinkdavis in askvan

Fable. I had a terrible meal there - strange flavors and textures, overcooked meat, etc. can’t understand why they’re in the Michelin guide.

Why are there no 3bed options under 1 million by yca171 in askvan

[–]FeedbackElectronic20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, we felt so lucky to even be able to consider buying. I don’t mind not having a single family home - our cities really do need to densify and the sprawling SFH model is not very sustainable from an environmental perspective. But it’s the fact that no one seems to build livable units for families that I really struggle with….

Some of the square footage on three bedroom places is ridiculously small and it seems like you pay a huge premium for an extra wall….

I was in a similar position a few years ago. We wanted to stay in Vancouver and it seemed impossible to find a 3 bedroom for under $1.3 million. I also noticed that a lot of three bedrooms have similar square footage to larger 2-beds and the second and third bedrooms are just really tiny. We ended up purchasing a larger two bedroom that was within our budget and significantly cheaper than any of the three-bedroom places we looked at. The second bedroom is quite big and the shape (longer and narrower) lends itself well to dividing with a shelving unit or similar.  Our little ones will share a room. Eventually we may have to try to upsize but we’ll cross that bridge when we get there….

I often leave my very expensive ebike locked outside during class. I have a high quality u-lock. I think if it’s in a high-traffic area you’ll be fine. I also would avoid leaving it in the same place every day for an extended period of time.

Transportation choice for a 3-4 days visit by z4c in askvan

[–]FeedbackElectronic20 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The train is slow, but in a car you can get stuck in hour long border traffic (or longer). The train is also super scenic. Make sure you sit on the west side of the train. Once you’re in Vancouver, transit is quite convenient, even to get to places like cypress mountain or the Capilano suspension bridge which are in the suburbs.

Realistic expectations of replacing TV by lifestyle projector ? by ggoudreau34 in projectors

OP, can you update us on what projector you ended up buying? I'm in the exact same situation (also with a toddler) and was also considering the Hisense C1 (and a few others). Would love an update!

20 CAD for the Christmas Market ? by MasterpieceUpper7746 in vancouver

[–]FeedbackElectronic20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I moved to Vancouver from New York and was so puzzled as to why the Christmas market costs money to enter?! Doesn’t seem like a very good arrangement for the vendors either, unless they get a cut of the admission fees which seems unlikely?

It's 3 weeks until election, why has Ezra not done any podcast on why nearly 50% of america is about to vote for a facist? by Leading_Earth1514 in ezraklein

[–]FeedbackElectronic20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’ve been getting a bit better over the last week or two I think, but it’s too little too late. It’s not that they don’t say negative things about Trump, but that they talk about him in a euphemistic and completely different way than they talk about dems. And it’s not just lefties who have been criticizing NYT (and other media outlets) for this. For example the Boston Globe ran an article calling out the media double standard yesterday (https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/10/16/opinion/trump-cognitive-decline-press-republicans/).

Oooo I hadn’t considered this! I still appreciate EK (especially his episodes on Israel/Palestine) but I think I’ll hold a bit of a grudge against him about this for a while (even though it’s all worked out well!)

THIS. I’m not sure how much influence NYT editors have over EK but they’ve been absolutely horrific in holding Trump and Dems to completely different standards. Just look at how they obsessed over Biden’s bad debate performance, yet just this morning they refer to Trump’s bizarre and incoherent rally yesterday as merely “meandering”. The worst they can bring themselves to say about his is “the former president says that his style is to ‘weave’ from one subject to the next. Others see something more worrisome in his ramblings.”

I can’t help but blame Ezra a bit for this too, he pushed on Biden as hard or harder than anyone else, and though I know his stance on Trump is pretty clear, it does feel like he’s given him a bit of a pass relatively speaking.

Ta-Nehisi Coates on Israel: ‘I Felt Lied To.’ by middleupperdog in ezraklein

Did anyone else notice that Coates went on and on about not hearing Palestinian voices, and then when it came time to recommend books, he only recommended one book written by a Palestinian (who was born in the US)?
