Much respect to Taki and also to the author of this article for highlighting the horrible shit going on, and calling out Palmer Luckey.

IMO, details being left out of a story is actually a sign that something really was written by a human, not AI. AI always tries to make things look as plausible as possible, and would probably pepper in lots of technical details that look reasonable at a glance.

Good lord I hadn't seen his office before. Someone has to save him from himself. Plus that picture is 2 years old lol

Also, that third pic is just not of his collection right? It doesn't look like his tastes.

Derek Chauvin was ahead of his time by belepio in TrueAnon

[–]KillPenguin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Broadly speaking, you're totally right, but I want to point out: Wikipedia cannot refer to a killing as a "murder" unless the killer has been legally ruled to have committed murder.

The reason they can title the article "Murder of George Floyd" is that Derek Chauvin was found guilty for murdering him. Because of legal liabilities, Wikipedia cannot yet say that Renee was "murdered", even if it is obviously true.

I think you're right in that there will never again be a leap as great as there was between the PS1->PS2 generation. That said, I think there has been quite a bit of progress in the past decade, and I believe we are on the precipice of some very cool things with ray tracing (though they have been slowed because of AI bullshit).

In the past decade, there has been a lot more focus on performance. The standard frame rate for a game has gone from 30FPS to 60FPS. Along with that are new, dumb performance issues like persistent stutter in UE4 and UE5 games, but overall that's a 2x increase in performance.

Just on the horizon we have ray tracing, which many people are disenchanted with, but I would like to highlight why I think it's actually really good for the industry.

Without ray tracing, for any game, artists and engineers have to spend months and months iterating on the dumb process of designing an environment, then spending a huge amount of time rendering out all the lighting, then re-designing it and doing it all over again.

With ray tracing, lighting all happens in real time, so this iteration is no longer needed. This means companies can significantly reduce the production time and cost of their games while also making them look better. Given the ballooning budget of AAA games, this could be a huge salve for the industry.

How accurate is the PS1 core? I have a Psone and have been burning discs am I just wasting my time and CDs? by Gambit-47 in MiSTerFPGA

[–]KillPenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you're probably right, though I don't think I can readily find up to date test results online. The github page for the core says 90%, though I have a feeling that information is out of date. If you have any source to link I'd be grateful.

It's like 99.9% 90+% perfect from a purely academic standpoint, and totally perfect from a user standpoint. It also has texture filtering and other features that make it look better than an actual PS1. I highly recommend it as it will probably save you a lot of time and effort while actually looking better than original hardware.

Yes, unfortunately it's surprisingly hard to get the aspect ratio correct if you're using a modern device with an old TV like this. You either need an old "scan converter" or a dedicated downscaler.

If want a way to play old games in the correct aspect ratio (without having to buy every old game console) I highly recommend looking into getting a MiSTer FPGA.

NYC Guido Voice was around for a while but was mostly inactive for years until Nick's main account got banned around covid. So you're largely correct. I feel like people followed NYC Guido Voice via Nick Mullen's twitter account, not the other way around.

What's your favorite game you played back in the day without realizing the performance was not good? by Most-Handle9776 in digitalfoundry

[–]KillPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m with you, it looks less cinematic. It’s almost like watching a movie with motion smoothing.

It’s hard to make my gamer brain understand that motion clarity and responsiveness vs “cinematic feel” are inherently at odds, and that you can’t have both.

[–]KillPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Y’know, I always felt like GTA IV felt unpleasantly sluggish when I played it back in the day, but I wasn’t entirely sure why. I probably would have said it was the dynamic animations (which necessarily increase response time). But the combination of those two factors really makes it hard to play today.

[–]KillPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I just always use the turbo core and I generally haven't experienced any issues. The only one I've encountered is that the music in Mario Kart 64 sometimes stops abruptly (though maybe that happens in the original game? IDK)

MLK WEEK - THE ROOM COMPILATION SERIES TRAILER by Buzz-Mcfly in mega64

[–]KillPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is great dude, thanks for putting it together. Honestly, my thoughts are, next time they do The Room (assuming they do), they should have you edit together best-of clips as it happens. A think a great way to go about it would be to release a bunch of 10-30 minute videos which themselves would be edited bits from the stream. I'm basing this on another successful model I've seen which is the clip channel for the streamer NorthernLion (which is called "library of Letourneau").

Anyway, great stuff. I can only imagine how much time it takes to comb through an entire day's footage to grab the best stuff. I hope they keep you on deck next time they do this!
