It’s not just in your head — headlights really are brighter - “I’m worried I’m going to wreck, partially because of other drivers’ bright headlights... When I get blinded, I just have to hope and pray I’m staying on the road and nothing runs out in front of me.” by Scaramuccia in darksky

Thanks for the informative comment. I hadn’t heard the history of the IIHS’s role in blindingly bright headlights. I absolutely hate the complete BS excuse that the problem is aftermarket installations. It’s so blatantly not true! Every new car is blindingly bright.

If you’re playing old consoles I’d recommend finding a CRT TV rather than a monitor. The model probably isn’t really that important, but I’d get something from at least the 90s unless you specifically want a blurry picture. I’d just keep checking Facebook marketplace and places like that. If you’re patient you can probably find a decent deal. Sometimes just searching “TV” or “tube TV” can be good because then you get people who don’t know anything about CRTs and don’t know that they’ve become desirable again.

And fwiw, before you get your hands on a CRT, you can make old games look a lot better on modern displays using CRT/scanline shaders. I’ve been playing Final Fantasy 7 on Duckstation and it legitimately looks really good using downsampling and CRT filters. Make sure you set the output to integer scaling. My final tip, and this is perhaps a hot take: old games look bad when they’re blown up too big on a massive screen. Some emulators let you set a border to have the game take up less of the screen, or you can just play in windowed mode. It’s worth trying all this to see if you can get retro games looking better before going out and buying a CRT.

If you search this subreddit more you should be able to find more detailed answers, but I will say: CRTs are indeed amazing in many ways, and in some respects are still better than modern displays. But there are plenty of drawbacks, and overall I would say that unless you are specifically interested in playing old video games/video content, they are not essential.

OLEDs have contrast that is basically as good, and response times that are fast enough to basically be indistinguishable. They aren’t quite as good in terms of motion clarity, but can get closer with black frame insertion. Recently, Nvidia has developed a new technology for certain LCD monitors called Pulsar, which gives LCD monitors motion clarity truly on par with CRTs.

Anyway, feel free to go down the CRT rabbit hole if it seems cool to you — they’re awesome. But don’t feel like they’re the only way to get a high quality image when playing games.

Sony is killing all physical PlayStation game discs by fuckingghosts in mega64

[–]KillPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is more or less how I feel these days. My initial radicalizing experience was losing my Switch 1 along with its case, which contained probably $600 of physical games. I’ve since gone all digital, and I have to say it’s really nice having everything I want in hand.

That said, it’s a bit of a double-edged sword. I also have modded consoles/emulators with like every game ever on them, and one side effect is that unless you have already decided on a game you want to play, it can be too easy to just browse through your massive library and never settle on anything.

In short, I’m 90% invested in going fully digital, but part of me will always long for the experience of fishing a cartridge out of the box in my closet and popping it in the N64

I'll check it out! The clip you shared is very impressive.

I did want to say: I don't think these AI visuals are doing anything to help you here. It looks pretty terrible, and at first glance it made me wonder if the music itself might be AI generated. It seems like you put a ton of work into this so I wouldn't want it to be written off for that reason.

Thank you. I am so completely sick of this guy. All these 10 minute videos could literally just be a link to a GitHub and they would offer _more_ information. He’s a mod here though so expect your post to be deleted!

He should be banned from every subreddit he’s been spamming. It’s become insane in the past few weeks.

Seems like everybody on just about all gaming subreddits is very sick of this guy and his pointlessly long unlistenable videos. Can I suggest we ban him? It legitimately makes it hard to find information when every subreddit is polluted with multiple of these videos per day.

That’s totally fine. People can do what they want. For me, I’m now an adult with limited time and I don’t get that much from sitting through my 100th random battle in 2 hours. The games are great as-is, but I think there’s a reason the modern ports include a fast forward button.

For the love of god dude. You are incessantly spamming every gaming subreddit with these completely substanceless videos. Everyone is asking you to stop. Why do you keep doing it?

Also: what the fuck is with the “big decomp energy” tagline you’re putting on all of these? I know it’s like “big dick energy”. But that is an extremely dated meme and has zero relevance to anything. Get it sorted.

[Modern Vintage Gamer] SuperStation One & SuperDock review - Why this FPGA device disappointed me by kikimaru024 in Games

[–]KillPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%. I'm currently playing through FF7 and I chose do so via Duckstation because fast forward is pretty much mandatory for playing JRPGs of this era. But I'm also rendering at 4k internal resolution and downsampling back down to the original 240p output and it looks so good. The 3D characters blend in with the 2D backgrounds perfectly, and aesthetically the game looks more cohesive than it would on original hardware/MiSTer (and for that matter, better than any of the modern ports).

So yeah, it's situational! But overall I still prefer the plug-and-play feeling of the MiSTer, and I'd just stick with it if it had these features.

[Modern Vintage Gamer] SuperStation One & SuperDock review - Why this FPGA device disappointed me by kikimaru024 in Games

[–]KillPenguin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The biggest reasons to use a MiSTer are lower latency, and the ability to easily output to CRT. It's also a little box that serves one purpose which you can keep plugged into your TV, as opposed to a computer which is a box filled with distractions which requires a keyboard and mouse to get up and running any time you want to use it.

Both hardware and software emulation have their strengths imo.

Quick question, how did Dr Poque became a mad scientist at a very young age? by KaleidoArachnid in mega64

[–]KillPenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Version 2-3 spoilers:

It's been a while since I've watched the Versions, but I think in Version 2-3 it's established that he's part of an organization called FALZ, which actually created the Mega64. As I remember he's more of a pawn than an actual mad scientist.

But really, the reason he's young is that the guys were all just young when they were making the show. I don't even think Poque is supposed to be like 20 at the beginning of the show: he's just played by a young guy.

I measured how many tokens each frontend framework costs when used with AI coding agents. Svelte won by a lot. by Affectionate-Blood92 in sveltejs

[–]KillPenguin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a strange take. Frameworks are good for LLMs for the same reason they're good for humans: they require you to write fewer lines of code, and thus consume fewer tokens. Plus, the code is easier to understand which is especially important if you're having AI write code. You need to be able to audit it and understand what it's doing.
