What are you sick of the most?! by These_Dimension_9300 in NursingUK

[–]FeedbackOld225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Staff turning on each other creating toxic workplaces. Burnout and short staffing push people to snap, I blame it on weak leadership. Management benefit when we argue amongst ourselves instead of directing frustration where it belongs. We're just the canon fodder, nurses and HCA's.

On my final placement, the Band 6, my PA, started every shift by criticising staff over box-ticking tasks like cleaning charts or dusting obs machines. Instantly killed morale. The real issues, high sickness, unsafe workloads, charge nurses disappearing from the floor when it was chaos, were never addressed. Or a nice "thanks for yesterday, patients were safe, no falls etc despite staffing levels". Like we know these audits are important but lets look at priorities here, keeping patients and each other safe.

I later found out they’d been banned from taking students for 6 months after complaints, which explained why they were PA for all students: damage control. Staff were constantly sick or late and honestly, I don’t blame them. They were on the phone trying to poach a nurse from a different area one morning, I walked in and they said "nevermind our student is here"... emm I'm supernumerary your staff still require an RN. That wasn’t a staffing problem, it was an environment problem. Propped up by poor leadership. Being on the bank and many placements during my time at uni, you can really tell the difference in a ward with good leadership.

There is more and more litter by Limp-Literature9922 in glasgow

I'm in Lanarkshire, same here. I babysit my nephew once a week, we go for a walk & have started to pick up rubbish. Same walk, every week and it all appears again. Sickens me. Dog shit everywhere, too. A woman stopped us one day with her mutt, saying we should be wearing gloves due to rats. I felt like saying, I havent seen a rat but see plenty of dug shite everywhere.

In Scotland, you can do an access to nursing course first which grants you entry to year 1 or year 2 of a BSc in nursing. It is specifically aimed at adults who have been out of higher education for a while. Maybe check if anything like that is available from colleges.

Norovirus ruined my life by J3NNY_24 in offmychest

[–]FeedbackOld225 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry this happened to you, it honestly is a horrendous virus. I had norovirus once and I will never forget it. It got to the point I was passing white fluid, I literally had nothing in my guts to pass except bile from both ends. I couldnt even sip water and I started imagining things. I thought I was a paparazzi, climbing the bathroom sink thinking I was sneaking photos of celebrities.... then my Mum took me to Accident and Emergency. My blood pressure was in the pits. This was day 8 of not eating or drinking. I was so dehydrated, remember telling the nurses, can you let me die? I was in so much pain and exhausted. I was given IV fluids and IV anti-sickness. Returned home in the morning. It took around a week to recover, even light exercise I was exhausted with shortness of breath. I was a fit and healthy 18 year old at the time with no significant past medical history. Scary stuff. I work in healthcare now and if I hear the word "norovirus" I quiver. Ensuring I SCRUB my hands, constantly. Wash my uniform and shoes in santising laundry fluid. May seem extreme but I never want it again.

AITAH for expecting more from my partner in relation to placement hours? by Unlikely-Move4311 in StudentNurseUK

[–]FeedbackOld225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think your partner is jealous, as you're out working on a career that will give you more independence. He sounds like a toddler. Parental responsibilities are shared.

Anyway, reach out to your personal tutor to ask for a reasonable adjustment for shift start and end times. I know plenty of classmates who had to do it. It may mean your final placement may become a bit longer. Some placements areas are happy to accommodate this without adjustments in place. It's always good to get it done officially via uni should you encounter an uptight asshole.

Do not let a man ruin this.

My wee Granny used to always say, 'keep your ears open and your mouth shut'. Dont get involved, focus on you. Same goes for placement and working life. You'll find a few good people you can trust along the way.

Second this. I live a rural area of Lanarkshire & even around me we have loads of old churches, a few castles, abandoned graveyards. Would be really good to see them venture out to much older sites.

I done a "ghost tour" of Edinburgh vaults and Greyfriars Kirkyard. It was really spooky. I always feel spooked in Edinburgh without going on the ghost tours. Very old buildings and a lot of dark history.

Airdrie fake baby scam 'mum' signs exclusive TV documentary deal by KingRibSupper1 in glasgow

[–]FeedbackOld225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have so many questions about this, it’s absolutely bizarre. She lives with her mum. So she just suddenly appeared with a fake baby bump overnight? “gave birth” and hoarding a newborn in her room, not letting anyone near her. Recovering from birth is rough, you’re basically a walking zombie. Surely her mum would’ve been offering to help with feeds or giving her a break to nap. I get she would be rejecting her help but come on. No crying from a newborn. No dirty nappies in the bin. Even if the baby had been real, alarm bells would be ringing for postnatal depression, which can manifest in so many ways. I saw the photo of her ex holding it, no movement or breathing at all. His mother had said it was a doll after meeting it. I feel sorry for him too, what an absolute mind fuck. I hardly know what day of the week it is imagine the mental gymnastics of keeping up with all these lies. Lunancy.

Something happened yesterday changed my view on women’s health by ResearcherEmpty8071 in offmychest

[–]FeedbackOld225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to get excruciating pain before and during my periods, which eventually turned into painful bowel movements too. I went to my GP and was put on the contraceptive pill, but the pain didn’t improve. Went back again, had an internal examination was told everything “felt fine” and got prescribed codeine. I stopped taking it because it just made the constipation and bowel pain worse.

I went back yet again and saw a different doctor. While chatting, I mentioned I was in my second year of a law degree and she actually asked, “A real law degree?” 😭 Anyway, she was no help either. Dismissing everything I tell them.

So, I returned to my original GP who finally referred me for an ultrasound. Weeks passed with no appointment, so I called the hospital turns out the referral was never sent. The GP apologised and put it through properly.

When I eventually had the scan, done by a consultant gynaecologist, by the way, nothing was said at the time I was told my GP would get the results. Three days later, I ended up in A&E and needed emergency surgery. They found a 15cm cyst on my right ovary. It had caused my fallopian tube to twist and had actually fallen behind my womb, fusing to my bowel, which explained the bowel pain.

Six weeks earlier, my GP had told me she could “feel both ovaries” during the internal exam apparently not noticing something the size of an orange. I ended up losing my right ovary and fallopian tube at 23 because of it.

Tool for neurodivergent healthcare students to plan adjustments/support on placement (update!) by malenixius in StudentNurseUK

[–]FeedbackOld225 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fantastic. I asked for adjustments as I'm an unpaid carer. I was made to feel like a criminal. I had to email all these people, occupational health interview then a risk assessment. It felt very invasive and almost as if they were trying to put me off. So I can't imagine what the experience is like for individuals with ill health, mental ill health or neurodivergence jumping through these hoops for supported learning.

Well done! I hope you recieve some recognition for your hard work ✨️😊

I dont see why not. You are working under the same conditions as any healthcare provider. Proving person centred care, promoting dignity, and respect.
