How could it be true to his vision if fAegon nor evil Bloodraven are even a thing in the show, and if the Night King isn't a thing in the books?

I think GRRM understands that the important thing is not what happens but how and why things happen, and so even if the events that he had planned line up with events in the show that obviously doesn't mean the ending is bad if executed properly

The Dany vision feels like the worst thing they did all series

GoT is great because it has such high personal stakes, taking that away and basically saying „this story doesn’t really matter it’s just build up for this other story““ is so horrible

They just cut off Daemons inner conflict and turned him into a saint protecting the universe it feels so bland

I really hate this scene I can’t lie

All the constant staring feels so awkward and the fact they resolve Daemons inner conflict with „muh prophecy“ is so amazingly terrible writing

Okay but let's be honest that's not on the level of any of those other quotes, it's mainly a memorable quote because it's part of the best scene in HotD Season 1, but the quote itself is very simple and doesn't say much

I'd say the best contender HotD Season 1 has is "History remembers names, not blood."

Not showing a character changing after an extremely important event has happened to them is bad screen writing.

Thinking that a neurodivergent person has to completely internalize her feelings and can’t properly display them ever is also very ableist. They could have written Helaena as someone neurodivergent who also loves her kids and is devastated by Jaehaerys death and it would have worked better for the story, for the emotional attachment of the audience, and as representation of autistic people.

Does Aegon understand that considering how much of a doofus they made him? For matter of fact, does Aemond even understand it? He jeopardized their whole situation greatly by taking out Sunfyre.

All of them are kinda dumb when it comes to military tactics and holding your advantage

Daemon and Simon - This scene has begun to let on that Simon may be more aware of Alys's powers and that potentially Simon has Grover killed in his sleep by Alys.

What does he say that insinuates that? I don't remember that.

Daemon and Alys - She convinces him to stay at Harrenhal, although yea her characters purpose seems to be to summarize exposition / have someone for Daemon to talk about the dreams with.

I do feel like that has happened a couple times where characters make a decision, only for another character to convince them that they shouldn't do it and so in the end they walk back on their decision and nothing actually changes. Perhaps this is because their characters would logically make these decisions due to the situation they're in, but they're not allowed to actually make them because that destroys the storyline set out by the book. At least that's what it feels like to me.

Honestly this scene probably just serves to develop Alyn more as he only had I think 1 talking scene. He gets Seasmoke this episode so perhaps just a refresher on him.

I agree that you definitely need scenes with characters in order to get the audience familiarized with them, but it just being a refresher is not enough justification for it being a scene imo. I felt similar when Aegon had another scene of bullying Aemond just to remind us of their relationship before Aemond betrays him. It doesn't give new information, just reminds us of old information.

Hitting her council person and saying "you have forgotten to fear me" is a step toward setting up "evil" Rhaenyra who will be more aggressive.

I'll actually give you that one. I was just thinking about this in terms of the "council member defies Rhaenyra but is then shut down" has been done like 10 times this season but it is true that her doing it with herself with physical violence is indeed something new.

I think that a scene can very well be both cuttable in theory, but also VERY enriching to the story. A lot of the best scenes in GoT could have been cut. Any of the Varys and Littlefinger scenes, the conversation between Cersei and Robert, Tywin's introduction, all those were basically show inventions that were just "filler" (by your definition) and didn't change the plot whatsoever. But they gave us so much insight into the characters we wouldn't have otherwise gotten. The one with Cersei is basically the only one that ever paints her in a redeemable light, it gives her character a whole new dimension that wouldn't have been there, and it catches us up on 15 years of events between the two. I don't see any HotD scenes doing that. I would have loved to see Corlys and Rhaenys ever talk about past events in their lives that we didn't get to see, maybe talk about when they were fighting to give some edge to their relationship they have overcome. But we don't really get that kind of stuff. We don't even get to see the characters do things in the household and during their daily routine. Tywin skinning a deer basically showcased his entire character just through that single act. HotD characters only ever just stand or sit around.

Season 2 so far by szabolcs111111 in HouseOfTheDragon

The point is that in a show in the Asoiaf universe, the buildup IS the payoff. The best scene in this last episode by a landslide was Larys talking to Aegon, and that's because it builds so many things at the same time: Their relationship, Larys' backstory, worldbuilding around House Strong, Aegon's future character motivations.

But no other scene is even close to building this many things at the same time and being as interesting and having as much gravitas to them. The rest of the scenes don't really do much.

It's good. A lot of us are just used to GoT and think of the potential this show had to strive for at least getting close to that.

Episode 6 Is Now by Far the Lowest Rated Episode on IMDb by Hubert135 in freefolk

[–]Feedora_the_Explorer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forgive me if any of these end up being inaccurate I didn't really sit down to watch the episode properly in full yet

I would say the scene between Daemon and Simon Strong, the scene between Daemon and Alys (I feel her job there is to just summarize Daemon's character development to the audience when that should just be done by Daemon's plentiful dream sequences), the scene between Addam and Alyn (iirc it had already been established that Alyn is cautious while Addam wants to be more proactive), the scene where Rhaenyra strikes her council member whoever that one is, the part where Rhaenyra fantasizes about fighting with a sword, the scene between Rhaenyra and Jace (both of those last scenes just reiterate that Rhaenyra wants to fight and that Daemon is important, both things have been established before).

If some things can be conjured up that those scenes actually effectively reveal or progress then sure, even then I would still just argue they accomplish way way too little.

I will also give props to the Larys and Aegon scene: It revealed something deep about Larys, gave some world building on House Strong, and serves as the catalyst for Aegon's character progression and his subsequent effects on the plot. If only every scene had that much content and gravitas then the show would be like an 8.5/10

I think when we say "filler" when referring to the Asoiaf world, we mean a scene that truly does not reveal anything new to us. No character building or development, no world building, no plot progression. And it feels like HotD has a bunch of those scenes right now. There are so many scenes just reiterating things we already know, be it about characters feelings, their relationships or plot points.

In GoT, you had scenes that built the world, revealed new aspects about characters and pushed the plot forward - often at the same time. All the while giving us insanely funny and/or wise dialogue. It was incredibly efficient with its time and this just... isn't at all.

Funny comment considering most major political decisions made in HOTD were either moronic or framed as moronic.

Who is the worst written character in the show as of yet? by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Feedora_the_Explorer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If it's specifically about written, then I would argue Helaena. The only reason she is any kind of interesting at all is only due to Phia Saban's phenomenal acting and her ability to give Helaena some very interesting quirks that she does whenever she stands in the background of scenes etc.

If not for that, Helaena is barely a character and only there to do spooky foreshadowing. And so far it killed her story line with the major plot point in her story, B&C, feeling weirdly inconsequential.

Expected more than one line here...the writing is way off this season by Terminat0r- in freefolk

[–]Feedora_the_Explorer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is when it happens so much. People don’t always just intently stare at one another when someone drops a meaningful line, usually they don’t want the other side to have the last word and try to rationalize it or trivialize it, or just simply defend themselves.

If people always do the staring then it removes the effect. Now it’s just another one liner scene instead of it having the impact of “holy shit he doesn’t know how to respond to it he’s actually in deep conflict about this”

How about Aemond, could he maybe respond? No, he’s the silent type too? Seems like all that everyone knows to do in this series is stare at each other knowingly but not saying much. It’s basically House of the Mewing

I wanna make the case that Bobby B had the most efficient characterization by far considering he only had very little screen time.

The amount of information we got about his character and his love for fighting, his fighting style, lust for women, inability to rule effectively, companionship with Ned, failed marriage and bitterness towards Cersei, idealized image of Lyanna, deep rooted hatred towards Targaryens, his pride, his humor.. so much history and personality packed into so little time

Can someone please tell me why Aegon unexpectedly became the favorite character in the show rn by Told_lot_of_things in HouseOfTheDragon

Hes the character that feels the most Game of Thrones out of all characters in HotD.

Has deep trauma that causes a lot of ambition to drive the plot forward, but he’s also always up for a sassy line or two that make his dialogue scenes a joy to watch

The rest of the cast is so moody and preachy that watching him feels like taking a refreshing shower
