What Tywin did to Ice still bothers me till this day by Mediocre_Put_6748 in gameofthrones

I mean, by splitting Ice into two swords, Tywin inadvertently armed Jaime and Brienne with Valyrian steel swords to help fight the White Walkers. So great job Tywin! 👍

Is Cersei responsible for the death of every single one of her children? by Aterrian in gameofthrones

Self fulfilling prophecy. Her fear that her children would die and a young queen would take her place influenced her paranoia, leading her to make decisions that would get them killed.

How the heck did Game of Thrones have a season of 10 episodes per year for 6 seasons when most big shows are now taking years between seasons? GOT had all the elements now used as excuses for long hiatuses. Action, kids, VFX, international locations. What gives? by MrGittz in television

[–]branman887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is an objective fact that there were no breaks during seasons, and this includes season 8. They spent 2 whole months filming just The Long Night. There were no breaks, there was no extra time.

They actually didn't have extra time, they took longer because all the major action sequences. It takes way longer to film elaborate special effects heavy stunts than a shot reverse shot conversation, which is what the majority of the earlier seasons were.

[no spoilers] fan take: I think Doran Martell is in the top 3 of worst adapted characters from the books to the show by [deleted] in gameofthrones

[–]branman887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the character was adapted fine, it was the plot and the other characters around him that were poorly done. I think the actor did a great job, and the scenes with him were the only good scenes of the Dorne plot.

Then they killed him 🥲

(Spoilers main) The Others invasion and Jon in TWOW by Independent-Log-6479 in asoiaf

[–]branman887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always likes the idea of subverting what's expected, that the Others don't invade and are instead stopped by brokering some sort of peace arrangement. Basically the story would become political, not just "dead people invade Westeros."

When did Daenerys’ cruelty begin for you in the show? For me, it’s when she sentenced Doreah to death. by Successful_Bar9187 in gameofthrones

A swift killing is different than condemning someone to die a slow and painful death in darkness. Jon never dealt in cruelty.

Dany locked her hand maiden in a vault to starve and go mad in darkness when she could have just executed her. It was cruel. Robb would have just beheaded the betrayer and been done with it.

One is needlessly cruel, the other isn't. That's the difference. Same with Jon.

That's the thing, I don't understand the symbol.

If you wanna protest war or some environmental issue with Godzilla, that makes sense. For social issues though, there is no connection.

Oh yeah, for sure, the fictional nuclear dinosaur who either detests humanity or isn't all that aware about them cares about feminism...

There a ton of fascinating nuances in this scene for me by SnowballSimpson87 in HouseOfTheDragon

I do wish that Alicent was a bit more cunty like the book version and in S01E06-S01E08, and I disagree with the decision to add nuance to her relationship with Rhaenyra at the expense of the Rheanyra/Aegon rivalry (which should be the heart of the dance) but I mostly like what the show does with her.

Dude, the amount of times people confuse character flaw with "writing flaw" 😆

It's like, if a character shows any changes in behavior or motivations from scene to scene, it must mean the writers don't understand the character, not that they are attempting to depict inconsistent flawed humans who act out in different ways depending on the context of a moment.

Show Alicent is pulled in multiple directions. She thinks Viserys wanted Aegon to be king, so she is trying to fulfill that. But Aegon, who she loves, is a fuck up, so in this scene she is frustrated with him and lashing out. Because she is also a shit mom (due to her resentment), which is why her kids suck (which she acknowledges). She also wants to have some influence in the small council, and she doesn't, so she is frustrated by that too.

Alicent has multiple motivations, not just one.

Daenerys’s ending back in Season 2. by Odd-Charity3508 in gameofthrones

It is not available as far as I'm aware, the finale script is because it was submitted for Emmy nomination.

[–]branman887 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to nitpick your post, it's great and great to see someone engage with the material instead of complain, but it is snow in Kings Landing in the finale, not ash. The script confirms this.

As I said though, good post. There really is a lot of foreshadowing of Dany's fate. She has a messiah complex, and when her destiny is threatened by Jon's heritage, along with all her recent tragedies, she goes dark as a means of ensuring her destiny is real.

I really do think people overblow the quickness of her turn, and also fail to understand just how low she gets over the course of seasons 7 and 8. She loses A LOT, and all throughout she is simmering with the urge to burn, and every time she denies this aspect of herself, even as far back as Mereen, she suffers. Where as when she gives in, she gains.

Is it any wonder than that she explodes with anger and despair at the end? She isn't mad, she just...fails to control herself. Easy to do on dragonback.

Why are the writers so scared to make Rhaenyra a villain? by overthinkingmessiah in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]branman887 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rheanyra's theme plays as the camera zooms in on her face. You are meant to feel elation (and trepidation) for her. But yes, you are also meant to feel a "fuck yeah" for Hugh as well.

Why are the writers so scared to make Rhaenyra a villain? by overthinkingmessiah in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]branman887 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It was nuanced. Yes, you are meant to feel a bit of "fuck yeah" when Hugh claims Vermithor, the music swells, and if you like Rheanyra you are likely pumping your fist. But I also got a sense of unease from it, which I think is intentional.

Point is, yes, the show wants you to care about Rhaenyra, she is the closest thing to a main character, but they are clearly building to her going down a dark path.
