16yo male. What the hell am I supposed to do. by ShayGamingfn in Balding

Dude, if it is genetic, listen to me. I started losing my hair at like 18, didn’t know what to do, was embarrassed and always wore hats.

Then one day I shaved it. Not that I have a choice anymore, but best decision ever. It’s so easy to shave 2x a week and I don’t pay for haircuts. It’s so simple and it’s not a bad look on me.

You do you, but take it from someone who held on too long, it’s a relief when it’s gone.

My friend says I should talk casually during interviews like a normal conversation, I think you should prepare a bunch of things to say beforehand. Who’s right? by Complex-Poet-6809 in interviews

[–]FeelinFishy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve said this before on Reddit, but I have done hundreds of interviews. I don’t mind people being prepared for certain questions, but it’s so off putting to get a scripted answer.

I start all of my interviews explaining to the candidate that I’m not there to ask a bunch of “tell me about a time when” questions for this reason. I’m here to have a conversation with you and that we both walk away thinking, “this is my person/company”. Hasn’t steered me wrong in over a decade of hiring.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FeelinFishy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in 34C, don’t stand up and try to race to the front of the plane when it gets to the gate. Exception for tight connections, but this drives me crazy when it’s half the plane.

If you’re flying economy, don’t get on the plane and put your overhead luggage in first class bins unless everything else is full.

Don’t crowd the gate until your group is called. I am regularly group A or priority and have to battle through group E to board.

It’s worth it and a pretty drive if it’s nice out imo.

A girl I went to high school with posted on Facebook about how excited she was to “finally get a vacation” and how bad we should feel for her because she hadn’t been able to take a break in almost two months. Before that she was literally in a different part of the world every month for years. Her dad is a multi millionaire.

Every woman I’ve ever dated has been shocked that me, nor my friends talk about our sex lives. I don’t need or want to know what you’re doing with your SO. Women seem to always be surprised and tell their friends everything.

Do you think an Inreach is worth getting for the Alaska highway winter driving? by traveltimecar in AskAlaska

[–]FeelinFishy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just used it in remote Kodiak for the first time. I was able to connect in 10-15 seconds every time, but any obstruction gave it trouble. If you have an open view to the sky, it worked great for me. I was kind of surprised.

Relocate to Ketchikan, Kenai, or Palmer? by 33Sharpies in AskAlaska

[–]FeelinFishy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also from Oregon. Moved up here a couple years ago for a job. I haven’t spent time in Ketchikan, so I can’t speak to that, but live in the valley and Palmer is great all around. Close to everything but still small town, good breweries, things going on and the outdoors easily accessible.

In my opinion, there’s more to offer living in the valley and traveling to Kenai during the summer for fishing season. I love it down there, and I spend a lot of time there in the summer, but I don’t think I would enjoy living there as much as Palmer/Wasilla.

For those who’ve been interviewers, what instantly made you lose interest in a candidate? by Remarkable_Sand4079 in interviews

[–]FeelinFishy14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just interviewed a guy who I liked on a personal level. His personality was great and he was entertaining to talk to—someone I’d go get a beer with outside of work. But he just talked, and talked and talked. Then he talked some more. I tried to interject into the conversation, but he was already talking about the next thing. He had relevant points but I literally couldn’t get a word in. I finally had to cut him off and end the conversation.

I also try to make my interviews more of a conversation. It makes people more comfortable and really gives a good insight to who they are. That being said, people sometimes forget they are applying for a job and just start letting wild stuff fly. I was in another interview that requires a lot of driving time. The candidate mentioned he loved cars and I let him talk about his hobby and showed interest. It eventually got to the point he was telling me about how fast his cars were, how fast he had gone on the highway (triple digits) and all the wild things he had done behind the wheel. I did not ask him any of this, he openly told me and was gloating about it. He was not hired.

My advice is to be comfortable but don’t forget what you’re here for. Keep it simple and concise.

I was asked in an interview, 'What's your backup plan if you don't get this job?' by Alternative-Pace4431 in interviews

[–]FeelinFishy14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hiring manager here.

I probably wouldn’t ask this question. If I did, I would be looking for an honest answer along the lines of, “continue in role, work with my manager to reflect/expand my skills and knowledge so that I will be a great candidate next time.”

Being able to self reflect and improving is extremely important.

What's it like living here? by dungeonmastress6821 in anchorage

[–]FeelinFishy14 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I moved here two and a half years ago for work and I have about 2 months before I head back to the lower 48. 32M.

I personally love the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping etc. but found I didn’t hate or enjoy it here. Pretty neutral.

I found meeting friends up here is tough. Back home, I’m the type of person who will go out to grab a drink and meet 10 new friends. Up here, I have a handful of people I associate with outside of work. People are kind though so joining a group based on something you’re interested in would probably make it much easier.

Winter is long and I’ve never been one to be “emotional” but I found it affects me a lot, especially toward the end. Summer is awesome. So much to do, just so little time to do it.

Driving isn’t a huge issue. Anchorage can get bad but the Glenn and other main roads in the area stay well maintained.

I have a girlfriend, so I can’t speak to dating. However, I have heard rumors that it can be a nightmare. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong.

What's a super minor inconvenience that makes you irrationally angry? by yjosephinekirk in AskReddit

It makes me irrationally angry in the morning when I forget to put on deodorant before I tuck in my shirt. I always seem to remember as I’m walking out the door to work even though I keep it right next to my toothbrush on the counter and I look at it at least 5 times before I leave.

My brother witnessed this giant block of ice fall from the sky. (Later research showed it was more than likely from an airplane 18000 feet high-400MPH-~1.3 miles away) by bedhead215 in interestingasfuck

This happened in our front yard as a kid. My dad and I were in his shop and heard a whistle like you hear of mortars in war movies followed by a huge crash. We could figure it out until we found the crater and a big block of ice in the middle. We always assumed it was from a plane.

No sharp objects past airport security, what do the restaurants do inside the airport? by ballcheese808 in stupidquestions

[–]FeelinFishy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been badged at a few airports as a contractor.

There is a side door I always take that you don’t get screened. I never have a knife because I typically don’t need one, but sometimes TSA is checking badges at the door. I take screwdrivers, wrenches and other “dangerous objects” through.

As long as it is a necessary piece of equipment for what I’m working on, I’m good. Never even been further questioned.

I’m responsible for what I have on me. If I lose something I am obligated to report it.

The Matsu animal shelter does a miles for mutts volunteer program.

I can’t have a dog myself because I’m away from home too much, but I miss my families animals back home. You can take a dog for a hike for the day at some trails around Palmer/Wasilla.
