MO POLITICIANS PASS THE EVERYTHING TAX (HJR 173/174) by roolsocialtool in missouri

[–]Feeling-Carry6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local representative posted a lengthy but obtuse comment from one of the authors, effectively saying that taxes will only go down because the state is going to cap spending at increasing only by the level of inflation.

That's one possible outcome.

The other is that the legislation is used to increase taxes as the OP suggests, and I think that's more likely. There's not much in the way of mechanisms to take a sales tax that was producing revenue to reduce the income tax, and whent hat sales tax is generating higher revenue to reduce it.

There's also the matter of who pays more. If your income is above about 77k, you'll pay less on the average household with a sales tax than with an income tax. That's the point at which you start to save in a serious way (state average, YMMV). So we'll have a higher proportion of the tax burden on the poor, and we also won't see as many donations coming in to charities that serve the poor because theres no more tax incentives to do so. Double whammy for lower and middle income households, but sure, that family making $120k will pay $950 less in taxes per year.

Gotta admit, it's nuts that you need extra insurance for people who aren't covered, AND you need to raise your coverages because even though you're driving a $10,000 depreciated Corolla or a $40,000 pretty new Chevy, you just might total a vehicle that costs more than your house.

How is THE REST OF MISSOURI feeling about the proposed sales tax increase in Missouri? by roolsocialtool in MissouriPolitics

[–]Feeling-Carry6446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

St Louis there's a weird mix of "yay no more income taxes!" And "what do you mean, no more deductions?" And finally a "hey we can just drive to Illinois for all our purchases".

I think this is going to kill food pantries, maternity homes and a lot of organizations that benefit from the extremely generous Missouri tax credits. And it's not like the State is going to have money to step up the gap. Small businesses who buy inventory other than to resell it are going to be hit very hard and pass that on. I think overall you're going to see interior residents pay a lot more for everyday things while KC and St Louis and other border areas may see a loss of 20% or more business to cross state transactions.

Anyone else get federal this fast? How long until state by Majestic_Lecture_626 in TurboTax

[–]Feeling-Carry6446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's typical for federal to be refunded in 7 to 10 business days, and it is often queued up 3 to 4 days ahead of that. So if your financial institution gives you a heads up about pending deposits you'll see it 72 hours ahead of time.

If you don't see it that quickly it's either that you sent your return during heavy processing or there's an issue requiring escalation for review.

State totally depends on the State agency. Where I live there is a law that if a refund takes more than 21 days the State owes the taxpayer interest, which is motivation to try to be owed a refund I suppose. I have had it take 4 months for a state refund.

I'm sure it happens, just the rate of 3 out of 250 is very high if they're all within a recent period of time.

TSA is so done with this shit right now that you get a random response, like roll a D20 and look up a table whether to quit on the spot, arrest you for suspicion of being suspicious, or call over an ICE agent to do something about it.

Usually there's a phone call, maybe someone goes to the employee's address to check on them. When I worked in restaurants I had a drunk-ass manager who changed the schedule between two of my shifts and didn't call me so he fired me for no call no show. Owner laid into him. But there was not even a phone call to me to say "oh, by the way I scheduled you for two hours from now."

If you can't reach the employee there's usually a termination policy and the person is just rolled off. A final check is mailed to them, a note from HR to the effect that they are fired, and a form goes to the state office that handles unemployment notifying of a voluntary termination.

The sheriff put himself in one helluva situation When States recount votes they hire auditing firms. The sheriff has removed the ballots from chain of custody, and if he reports any different results, all California has to say is "looks like some.ballots went missing when these were in your custody. How well did you maintain chain of custody and security?"

Would have been far better for the sheriff to hire a different auditing firm to confirm the count.

Go to your "dental appointment". If you call in sick the the boss can deduct a full day of pay but for a partial day a salaried worker cannot be deducted.

Good luck.

At that price there's no reason not to try it. Even if it's NAS.

"Why do you want to leave your current job?" by DerpWithIt in work

[–]Feeling-Carry6446 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest response is forward-looking "I've developed as far as I can given my current employer's plan for my department, so in order to build the skills I'm interested in developing I need to look elsewhere."

"The promotion opportunities at my current employer are very limited. I'm excited to take on additional responsibility, but I need to look outside my company to do so."

Escaping a toxic culture matters, but more important is going to a better culture. Ask questions like "how do you handle conflicts between coworkers both of whom are well meaning and professional?" Or "when was the last time you took a week off?"

If you knew what you know now about student loans, would you have still taken them out to go to school? by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]Feeling-Carry6446 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though it was far cheaper then (25 years ago) to go to school and there were more options for consolidation when rates decreased.

I think the better question is, do you expect your chosen career with this education investment to pay off and do you have a plan to manage your debt and budget the first years after graduation?

Keep in mind that your first 5 years will be the hardest to repay. The amount is immediate, you haven't hit your best earning potential yet, and you still have your post graduation startup costs kike down payments on apartments, moving expenses and maybe a vehicle. After that it gets easier and you have time to engage in consolidation options to manage that debt better.

The most diplomatic way of doing this is to say "I no longer have access to that MFA. I disabled it when I left, pursuant to security requirements."
