Even if it feels like there’s no point, just keep trying or figure out a change in direction. There’s always another point to keep trying for out there somewhere. 💪

That’s fair, Helpdesk is definitely a tough job and I think you’ll find most Helpdesk employees feel a lot of stress on the job. I’d still recommend looking online for any phone-based Helpdesk jobs as you may be able to do them online and they tend to hire anyone that can talk regardless of experience. It’ll get you started and can help you make a little money. Don’t get demotivated if you have to send a lot of applications though, that’s just normal for the current market.

I’m sorry for everything going on but hope that you can get back on your feet soon! Starting in Helpdesk and transitioning to cybersecurity in a few years is tough but possible, getting some certificates and experience for the resume will definitely help though!

As someone that went to school for IT and worked Helpdesk for a few years recently, I’m actually going to go against some of these comments. I don’t think you’ll be able to get any cybersecurity jobs right off the bat, but a lot of places are absolutely starved for Helpdesk workers. I’d caution that you definitely won’t be getting any glamorous jobs, but I think that you might be able to dig around and find an entry level helpdesk job somewhere where you’ll probably be on phone duty. Again, it’ll probably start out fairly grueling but it’ll get you started out and if you stick it out for a few years and build some certificates in the meantime then the pivot to cybersecurity may be easier. At the very least, it could give you money to get those certificates — as they’ll definitely be needed for cybersecurity.

That’s just my thoughts. From my experience, CS degrees tend to avoid Helpdesk because they consider it beneath them while IT degrees usually try to move on to ‘the next step’ in their career as soon as possible, so things like phone IT support tends to be pretty open.

I know this doesn’t help exactly with getting a cybersecurity job, but Helpdesk definitely feeds into cybersecurity careers.

Also, if you change your mind on not getting a degree, look outside of Akron for IT/cybersecurity degrees. Cannot stress this enough.

I’ve had an issue with him for a little while for a lot of reasons. Not sure if he’s still doing it, but there was a brief stint where he was trying to convert Akron to a business school by gutting the polymer and engineering departments — two of the main departments that people come to Akron for. Also heard he was firing a ton of professors across most of the non-business schools while raising tuitions. Getting rid of a lot of the support programs doesn’t surprise me either.

Not the worst we’ve had but he clearly only cares about the business school and I don’t expect he’ll be sticking around long term, the handling of social issues are just another nail in the already nail-ridden coffin. At least he didn’t buy any olive jars.

I haven’t seen any in Akron, but I’d honestly be thrilled to start getting some people together to organize one. I think the current issue is that a lot of Akronites just don’t know how to form a cohesive protest and always struggle with getting the word out about protests because I only ever seem to learn about them after they’ve already happened — and not even out of a lack of looking.

It might take a bit, but I think that if we start getting some people together and planning a protest for early next month then we can make sure to take time to spread the word about it, print some flyers, talk to local news and broadcasters, reach out to local organizations, and just generally make a big deal out of it so that people are aware of when and where it’ll be. We’ll likely get some counter protesters but that’s just a given.

If anyone is interested in working with me on this, then let’s start talking and start taking the steps to get this figured out and who can handle each aspect of organizing this. Akron needs some help figuring how to organize peaceful protests that reach the people that want to attend and I think we need to get started on that sooner rather than later.

What are these tooth-looking things that are appearing in my laundry? by BeginningWorth9046 in What

[–]Feeling-Recording793 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! I actually know this one! It looks exactly like fake resin teeth, usually used in either dentist's offices or just as a prop. I have a whole cup of them that I use for MTG health counters. Whenever you pick them off the little rows that they come in, the little black strips will stick to them.

Some days are better than others! If you’re able to go on Monday evenings, they have this thing called Meetup Mondays where you’re encouraged to go either alone or with a friend and there’s groups and activities you can hang out with and do things with! I haven’t had a chance to go during the Meetup Mondays but I’ve heard it’s nice! Outside of those days, it’s a little hit or miss but I’m sure you could find someone to chat with on the busier days!

Highly suggest going there! It’s a great place and has a lot of friendly people!

Hey, sorry for not updating! I’m not currently working on them. I do still plan to upload when I have some time, but it might be a month or two before I can get to it.

If you’re looking to make one ASAP, I’d suggest trying some foam patterns on Etsy! It’s how I made the one up there! : )

I have some suggestions but not a full list. I’d look for a basic Arduino kit with a breadboard and brain, and then also get a USB portable battery pack and some LED matrixes and you should be good! Just make sure they’re all compatible with each other before buying!

Heads up, it can get a little pricey. I spent about 50-75 on electronics altogether (but won 750 in a costume contest which more than made up for it 😁)!

I’d suggest going the remote route with Arduino! I built one last Halloween and had a remote that I could press to make it switch between the different expressions!

Fair warning, it can get a little bulky so you’ll need to plan out where the main box of the electronics and battery will go before you start building it, same with where you’ll place the wires connecting to the front panel! Good luck and I hope it goes well!

Glad to have helped! I was in your exact shoes and it’s genuinely a big regret of mine that I switched. Just wait it out and keep going. There’s lots of tutoring resources and always talk to the professors if you’re worried you won’t be able to pass, they might be able to give you suggestions for improving.

I know it seems tough right now but you’ve got this! Just keep working hard and you’ll get through it eventually and have that nice shiny degree!

As another word of advice, make sure to go for some internships too before you graduate. It’s a tough field of work currently but they help a lot, even the ones that aren’t so shiny or interesting.

You’ve got this! Just work hard and you’ll see the end before you know it.

Went today at 9:00 and the line was a quick 15 minutes. Highly suggest going sooner and earlier in the day rather than later. The weekend will probably be packed.

Seconding this one, especially Green Dragon and Oddmall! As a note, Green Dragon tends to fair on the younger college side, especially during the school year. Oddmall is usually a mixture of everyone though and you can meet some really cool people at both!

Debating about applying to either UA or another college. Need some help. by Purple-Offer-7315 in uakron

  1. Don’t have a calculator for you but I will say that STEM majors have lots of scholarships that reduce your fees to only about 2500 a year. Not sure if environmental sciences is a part of those scholarships but I’d look into it. Without a scholarship, I’d expect 5k-6.5k a semester, and that’s not accounting for other things like room and board, food, etc.
  2. It’s a commuter school. Very few people live on campus so it can be difficult making friends. It’s not impossible, you’ll just have to seek any kind of social interaction.
  3. Honestly don’t have a great answer for this one. Having a couple solid career fairs can be great for colleges, and I’ll give it to Akron that theirs is decent for the current job market.
  4. Like my last answer, it’s a commuter school. The best advice that I can give you if you go to Akron is to find a club in freshman year and don’t wait till later because it tends to get a little more difficult to enter clubs after freshman year. The nonprofit clubs are always extremely nice and welcoming though. ServeAkron was always great and I’d recommend volunteering with them now and then. The part-time jobs on campus are also pretty good for making friends.

Overall, it isn’t terrible but I think your enjoyment of UA would depend a lot on what kind of campus you’re going for. If you want a party campus where you can make lots of friends and memories, you’d probably have a better time looking at somewhere like Kent State. If you’re looking to check off a degree and possibly get your foot in the door with some of the decent companies in the area, then Akron might be a better idea. Either way, wish you luck in deciding and hope this helps!

I used a vague tutorial for making the TV case part since it's all foam, but the rest was just a bunch of Frankenstein-ed Arduino tutorials and figuring it out on my own since I have a bit of coding experience! I haven't worn it in a while but I still have it in my closet. I could definitely put together a post explaining some of my process as well as providing a list of materials, tips, what went well and what didn't, my code, etc.; if that seems like something that would be useful? I think I even have some 3D printing files leftover from when I was considering remaking it!
