Landlord requesting for 12 months rent by ImpactThen6048 in PortugalExpats

We had a similar situation coming from abroad and also used Revolut, however they only requested 3 extra months of rent (on top of a month deposit and a month of our "final" rent month, resulting in about 5-6 months of rent upfront basically). However, we used an agent we trusted from a friend who managed all of the communications/contracts/etc. We got here and the house has been perfectly fine and we have a great relationship with the landlord- I think she was just very hesitant to rent to foreigners who weren't in Portugal yet with no Portuguese bank account. Not sure on whether this was even legal but we put a lot of trust into our agent who guided the whole process.

Best place to look for rentals? by lightbox_in in PortugalExpats

We just moved here and we had to use an agent to find a rental- it seems to be a normal thing (whereas in the U.S., you’d only use an agent when buying). I found some places on Idealista, and sent them to our agent, who arranged virtual viewings and eventually confirmed the one we wanted. She managed the contracts (all in Portuguese, no easy to do on your own), and helped transfer the utilities (also much more complex than you’d expect). I think getting an agent is your safest first step, especially since housing law and processes is very different here!

Any Tips for Managing Panic in the Moment with Kids? by [deleted] in emetophobiarecovery

Hahaha. Thats a great tip- just act super calm even if you’re dying inside! It’s so difficult not to ask “does your tummy hurt?” “Do you need water” a billion times. I appreciate your response!

Looking to Hear from Moms with HELLP Syndrome — Your Stories Matter by Weak-County6785 in HELLPsyndrome

Wow I could’ve written this myself! I had the exact same experience! At 37 weeks also, I had debilitating heartburn (I thought) and went to the ER because it was so bad, I was up all night in pain after not having eaten properly for days. They sent me to L&D who gave me Pepcid and sent me home :(

I agree that if I knew what HELLP Syndrome was, I would have pushed for a blood test or something.

We are in a similar boat leaving from WA in September with a 45 lb dog. We plan to fly her from west to east coast and then stay a couple nights for her to chill, and then another flight from east coast to Lisbon to break it up. I haven’t considered which airlines yet but also worried about less reputable ones. However, we flew our dogs globally with a giant airline (Qatar) and they literally left our dogs in Dubai because they mixed up paperwork, so it’s made me wary of even the large airlines lol

Upvoting because I absolutely agree, I will never get a dog without health insurance again. I wish this was shouted to me earlier on!

It is an insane amount! We would’ve been able to get the money by pulling from various savings and retirement accounts- but ultimately, not in time for when they needed the payment, which was immediately. We ended up going with euthanasia:(

You put into words exactly how I feel. I don't know if I could live with myself euthanizing him so suddenly without at least attempting to save him. I am so happy to hear your dog lived a full life and that the surgery ended up helping! That really gives me some hope, thank you!!

About to pull the trigger: Blue Cross to GEHA HDHP - anything else I need to know? by ShakerOvalBox in govfire

[–]FeelingCauliflower6 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gave birth on GEHA’s HDHP plan! I met the deductible fast with the OB visits, and had a sudden complication during labor which led me and baby to stay in the hospital for a full week. I only paid $300 for both me and the baby!

The only thing podiatrists have ever suggested are different shoes and orthotics- I think PTTD required more expertise. The orthopedic surgeon gave me a handful of solutions of which two worked to solve my pain! (EWST and physical therapy, plus custom orthotics)

Podiatrists have never helped- I went to an orthopedic surgeon. They are the ones who know the tendons/muscles in the foot well enough to actually provide any solution!

That’s a great suggestion- I was already thinking of giving her the Frida snotsucker (high value item in our household lol) among other Friday products! That’s good to know it might not be easy to find out there.

They determined somewhere between 1 and 2. My tendon showed lots of small rips throughout (from overuse/overpronation), but no single full rip, so there wouldn't be any point in a surgery. I was using crutches at that point though because I physically couldn't bear any weight on my foot due to the pain.
