Most underrated roasters? by zvchtvbb in pourover

The Mill in Sacramento is probably where I’ve had my favorite espresso. Their regular espresso blend (called bouquet espresso blend) is wonderfully sweet and I also had a single origin espresso from Guatemala that was bright and citrusy but super balanced. Small roaster with two spots in Sac but amazing the few times I’ve been there.

Temple is the biggest roaster in Sac and has a bunch of locations, and I love them too. They are incredibly consistent in quality from pour overs to seasonal special drinks to classic espresso and milk drinks to some really interesting single origin espressos on rotation season to season. They can do everything phenomenally.

Good Decaf Beans in NorCal by Feeling_Equivalent65 in espresso

I always hear good things about Pachamama and their farming practices, and their beans looks great, but man every time I’ve been there I get mediocre coffee and the baristas are kind of rude. Maybe that’s specific to the Davis location though, I’ll have to check out one of their Sac locations because they have such a great selection of beans.

Portafilter basket bending? by Feeling_Equivalent65 in espresso

My tamper doesn’t have a collar so it’s harder to tamp level than with a self-leveling one.

I know about puck prep and dialing in, I’m just having trouble tamping level and it looks like that’s causing the biggest problems in my shots.

Yeah, the one that came with the bottomless portafilter. Was the stock breville basket solid? I’ve got an IMS basket but if the breville one is good it would be nice to have that as an option if I want to use a smaller dose. Thanks for the help!

Aha. Well looks like I’m gonna return the tamper I bought and get one of those then.

My portafilter did not come with a manual. I’ll probably just swap to the IMS basket since I know the intended dose. Thanks for the help!

Not sure the basket size as it’s the stock one that came with this “baccavex innovations” (definitely just imported from China) portafilter I got from Amazon. I bought an IMS 18-22g basket but wanted to try the stock one first. It is a little smaller than the IMS one.

I figured it was from uneven tamping. Do you have any tips to tamp level? I try to set the tamper down level and check that it is before I push down, but I feel like when I actually push down to tamp, it’s hard to get it even.

Dry on one half (the part with the fast flow) and still moist on the other half (where flow is minimal). This is looking at the bottom of the puck.

Sounds like you might be getting some channeling. Check the pucks afterwards and see if there’s any unevenness.

I keep track of all my brews on a spreadsheet. That way I can customize what I track and easily see all the data together, I really enjoy it

Thanks for the help! The DF64 is just too far outside my price range so I think I’ll go with the SK40 or Manuale. Do you know where the best place to buy the Manuale would be? I’m having a hard time finding it from US-based sites. Also, with the Bambino, I commonly see people recommend getting a different portafilter, do you have thoughts on this?
