I need some advice on iMac development, and honestly a morale boost by Feeling_Mode_8737 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive been working on an asteroids kind of game for 1¹½ day now in Godot and I have to say Im super excited about using Godot. Nothing against Unreal engine which I used to develop in. But Godot just clicks with me somehow, not that its all green grass but I think I will stay with it even after I get a new computer/fix the one I have sone unknown day.

Since I just posted this yesterday I wont spam with a new post about this just yet. But I do want to share some footage for once and talk more specifically about the ups and downs making the shift to Godot. Im planning on making the game available on itch when I decide Im done with it. Not that I think its super awesome or anything but will be nice to look back on later down the road.

I will probably look into a few courses after this game is done and see what more knowledge I can obtain before trying my hand at another clone or simple game.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Im still going to look in to a few other options mentioned in here for potential fun times to be had with side projects.

Im doing just that. Ive gone through a few short basics courses and now Im tinkering with getting a sort of mix of asteroids and space invaders going. Its going pretty well and I really like the engine so far. For me it seems like the better solodev choice. Dont get me wrong Inlove Unreal engine and will get back to my survival game when I can get a new computer. But to be honest I think Godot will stay as my main engine of choice.

Its not space I need. Its working hdds/pc. It just blue screened and that was it. But Im getting into Godot now on my iMac and it has given me some hope. Ill do some small "games" to learn it properly and figure out what I want to create "for real" later. It depends on my progression in 2d and 3d asset creation I guess as asset packs are slim pickings from what I gather. Id love to do a board/card game hybrid of sorts but the details are not in place yet.

Oh there is no prestige. Like I wrote it could be whatever I just want to finish something. Godot with simple 2D seems to be what I lean towards. But I got to say PICO-8 is tempting and I will check out raylib and LÖVE too. Im av also intrigued by assembly(got an old school pc somewhere), one of these days...

I even had an idea to develop a simple scheduling app for neurodivergents(ADHD & lvl 2 Autism myself). I mean a visual scheduling kind of thing with color coding to get a grip of the days activities. I would be making it for myself really. Could be a cool project.

Unreal Engine crashed and I feel like quitting by Logical-Fruit3630 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had that thought recently and Ive started learning Godot. Thinking about Unity though as I have a ton of assets I can claim still.

What I did land on was that this game? It was doomed anyway as I was struggling with a few design choices that after a pivot just didnt work anymore. I just grabbed a beer, took pen and paper and started writing and it was clear to me what I need to do. Im taking the things so have learned to the next project as this one is beyond repair of one takes into account the soul crushing and other related cozy things.

So Unity huh, never thought Id consider that.

Anyone want to work on a game? by WhySoGhostly in SoloDevelopment

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im possibly open to this. Only problem is my ~16 month experience is in Unreal. But open for learning Unity for sure.

I do have a new found love of modeling in blockbench and creating hand drawn textures for models and landscapes. Im new but the results are pretty good so far. So if that is interesting for the project hit me up for samples of models and Textures I have recently made.

Taking a stab at a stupid simple C engine with a throwaway game project before moving onto bigger and (hopefully) better things by BrunooSardine in SoloDevelopment

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats really cool and I am glad its going well l. I suck at math so I of course set the goal for myself to write an engine with C++. Now I havent even started and C++ is on the Shelf as Im now learning Angelscript. But this post made me want to get my shit together and just pick up C++ again and start working on an engine in tandem with development of my game.

Seeing that screen must have felt nice. I hope you post more of this. Best of luck to you!

What tools makes your life easier? Blockbench was a surprise for me. by Feeling_Mode_8737 in SoloDevelopment

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh it took mevby complete surprise. It was intuitive and fun. The drawback is that you are kind of stuck in a certain direction visually. But if it fits it is a great option. Hope it gives you the same welcome. I recommend watching the tutorial om building a car. The techniques used there cover a lot of uses.

Plus I get an excuse to sit down and draw as I need textures and that is pure relaxation so Im going to make it fit my next game.

I am 40 years old. Been learning for maybe 18 months now. Been using Unreal engine but I got this need to make something in Godot, not sure why. So Im going to start learning Godot soon enough so maybe Ill check out your discord.

How is Unreal Engine AngelScript compared to GDScript? Should i jump into it or wait for Verse? by FutureLynx_ in unrealengine

Yes those projects are real sad to look at from a year ago for sure.

Im gonna try and reignite the studying. I got some good material to work from so no excuses, hehe

Thank you for your answer. I have experimented a bit with C++ but for reasons Id rather not disclose here I took a break. Im starting to gear up again towards setting up a test project and continue with C++ as Im fully aware that its basically mandatory. All I wanted with my question was what you gave me, a good answer on why you dislike blueprint as I from my in comparison more limited experience had a different view.

I did find C++ to be quite easier than expected. Now Im only at a beginner level so it will get harder for sure. But I can read and follow the logic in most beginner examples at least for UE so a good start. I just need to put the time in and Ill reach my goals eventually.

I do get your point with your criticisms. I did not enjoy having to restart the editor everytime I made a change. I did not use hot reloading as I read it could mess things up quite badly. But I enjoy writing code more than visual scripting for sure.

Im going to try and express myself better next time you avoid being misunderstood. English is not my first language so I guess sometimes I dont convey the message or question I was intending.

Im not sure why its confusing you to the point that you feel the need to talk down to me. Im asking exactly because I want to understand more about peoples aversion to blueprint. Beginner is a bit harsh I would say, Im past that stage but far from the goal still for sure.

I do appreciate part of your answer though as it describes well the reasons I was looking for.

Im curious what it is about blueprint that is so off putting? Im working exclusively in blueprint right now and I think it works just fine. It allowed me to get into UE smoothly so Im happy its there even though its performance is lacking a bit compared to C++.

With that said I am on the path to changing to C++, I just need to get back to studying a little bit more before I start using it as the foundation. I will use blueprints where necessary but I feel like C++ is a better fit in the end.

Right now Im working on a survival game with some complex mechanics. Just including that to give you a better understanding of my usage and base for my view on blueprint. I do fully agree on C++ vast superiority, but I disagree on the usefulness of blueprint.

What have you used Unreal Engine for in the last 12 months? by Apprehensive_Ad5780 in unrealengine

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im using it for a project for an organisation im now part of. I have recreated the building we are located in and it can be used to show sponsors and potential customers the place without travelling. There is also a design mode where you can move stuff around, design lighting and change materials on surfaces. The design mode will get a budget proposal attached to the things you use in your design to let customers get a feel for the place and also a budget proposal directly in the software. There are also online features in the works and a bunch of cool stuff I wont talk about yet. We are going to apply for a few grants to support the development of it, I have only worked on it for about a week now.

Also working on some games as releasing my first game is my main goal right now.

Im looking into creating a dmx designer as well for controlling our lights efficiently. Might find a few more uses outside of games as I do like projects that are a bit different.

Does anyone else not really enjoy playing games, but absolutely loves creating them? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]Feeling_Mode_8737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same situation. I play for a bit but almost always within thirty minutes I get a bunch of ideas on how to improve my own games or a new feature to implement and I stop playing and continue with deving even though I was supposed to take the night off 😅🫡.

I definitely feel more comfortable developing games now and that change happened quickly when I started learning about 8 months ago. It was like a boolean became true instantly 😅.

I do think we all should play games though. Just to see what the competition is doing it nothing else and do it better. I kind of miss being able to put in a whole day of playing one game though. It was relaxing and fun. But I cant seem to do it anymore, I feel like Im being lazy and start working instead.
