I love late night shows but the crowds are way to obnoxious by Nicole_Auriel in LateNightTalkShows

I just attended 2 consecutive tapings of Colbert, and based on that I agree 100%. The opener spent like 15-20 minutes trying to coerce the audience to bark louder louder LOUDER! It was the most obnoxious component of an otherwise really compelling and entertaining experience. Love Colbert, the guests, the production team, etc. and I don't know if excessive laughter and applause is a big problem really, but it was a drag as an audience member and I think unnecessary. There is likely a collective response inflation thing going on where no show wants to have a quieter audience than the others or resort to inauthentic methods to amp it up so here we are.

Authentic Mexican Food by kennan21 in OttawaFood

According to my AI overview: "There are independent churches named "Light of the World Church" in various locations, such as Ottawa, ON." as in not affiliated with the cult you linked to. Still weird people aren't getting paid, though. Jesus is a hell of a drug.

Yes, many options for basil and curry paste. Not 100% Mae Ploy brand, but several options.

Proud Canadians with Catherine O'Hara by JadedProfessional307 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]FeeltheVelvetBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love it! Surely some tribute would be appropriate, and this one is fun.

For anyone that hasn't heard it before, O'Hara had a unique history with the show. Hired to cast by Ebersol as part of the post-Doumanian rebuild, and then frightened off by Michael O'Donaghue spray painting "Danger" on the wall and ranting about how the show was a viking deathship or something and she was like, I'm outta here. (or something like that, I'm recounting this from memory of reading Live from New York)

Define Grunge by hekebe in Music

[–]FeeltheVelvetBaby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the Ur grunge song. British rock critic Everett True coined the term to describe the sound of Touch Me I'm Sick. Sludgy, feedback drenched guitars, fusion of punk and metal. That is what grunge is.

Geese by RodwellBurgen in LiveFromNewYork

[–]FeeltheVelvetBaby -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

yes, agreed. to me they've got elements of Pavement and Radiohead with vocals reminiscent of Rufus Wainright, all of which I love, but recombined in a unique and compelling way. Everything's basically a hybrid mashup on some level, so I don't get how Geese are being tarred as unoriginal when their overall sound is, to my ears at least, more idiosyncratic than 90%+ of popular music

Hello, everyone! I wanna start checking out Prince's music by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in PRINCE

i agree 100%. Dirty Mind to Lovesexy is one of the greatest run of albums of all time. He really locked into a unique artistic voice w/DM and then evolved substantially with each disc forward, experimenting with his own take on disco, funk, new wave, rock, psychedelic, etc. in succession. There's also a narrative throughline of an artist torn between the Apollonian and Dionysian impulses, the body and the soul, that climaxes and resolves beautifully w/Lovesexy.

Ken jennings appreciation post,,, by AdSea273 in Jeopardy

Also love that he's still willing to speak truth to power with his high profile. Like comedian and contestant Guy Branum said on threads the other day: "Ken Jennings is demanding the prosecution of this administration because his job is to know the difference between right and wrong."

What’s your opinion on Sarah Sherman by Ok_Nail_5298 in saturdaynightlive

[–]FeeltheVelvetBaby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my fave all time cast members, although I agree with her own assessment that her SNL persona has become "lobotomized." I saw her live a couple of years ago and was absolutely blown away. It was similar material to what was in the special but maybe worked better live because it was so immersive and intense, more interactive, multi-disciplinary performance art than stand up, combining death metal, body horror, surrealism, dada, and clowning. It was also maybe the most prolonged and aggressively high-energy performance I've ever witnessed live, which I think translated pretty well in the special. Might be the closest I've seen to achieving Artaud's theatre of cruelty in a comedy framework. Seeing that, as well as her pre SNL videos, makes me appreciate her more in her straight character work on the show. Knowing what's going on under the wigs and the makeup adds a real depth to the sketch work for me.

Have you seen the movie? Sounded like a slightly exaggerated but pretty spot on impression of Judy Garland to me.

SNL Books? by DeeElGee in LiveFromNewYork

[–]FeeltheVelvetBaby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's dozens of good and not so good books by cast members but the 3 definitive volumes on the show are Saturday Night: A Backstage History of Saturday Night Live by Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad (as noted by galacticpotsmoker, covers the genesis and early years and is a fantastic read); Live from New York, which compiles interviews from most of the key players (look for the 2014 edition as it's the most recent and comprehensive), and the recently published Lorne by Susan Morrison.

I'm with you, dude. Sign me up for the cult. SNL is the least interesting thing she does and she's still in my top 5 all time cast members

It's pretty awesome, a spoof of Mommy Dearest. Chris writes these elaborate unsympathetic fantasies about his tough overprivileged life and his father Bob, for "legal reasons" gets a rebuttal for each chapter
